you remember surfing right? it was one of the central themes of JFC remember?
anywho...Kelly Slater just recently won his ninth ASP title... that's two more championships than Lance Armstrong...
i read Kelly's autobio... interesting guy actually... as you may well remember he "acted" on Baywatch, dated Pam Anderson broke up and then got back together and then broke up again.... whew! how he had the energy to win 9 world titles after all that is a mystery, eh? has kind of a strange diet wherein he'll eat all of the same thing at the same time rather than mix things up in his digestive tract.... doesn't believe that the twin towers were taken down by two hijacked jetliners but well placed explosives... "zaps" himself with a battery operated "zapper" in order to kill microscopic parasites lurking in his body... i confess i have one myself... is a huge fan of nikolai tesla...
had enough? no wait... got another one... read an article about this young surfer dude who has aspergers... as a result of his disease he has much difficulty in the social graces of society but also a result of his disease has the ability to surf 8 straight hours w/o food or water and is also riding the monster wave of many championships in his future....

hey how weird is this: Johnny Depp is an actor playing a pirate who fashioned his character after Keith Richards a notorious rock star...
Keith Moon (deceased drummer for the Who) was a notorious rock star who was a rabid Robert Newton fan who played the notorious pirate Long John Silver... Moon co-starred in a film with Mae West in a 1978 film called Sexette as a gay dress designer and does a spot on "Long John" impersonation in the film.... the movie also co-starred Timothy Dalton (one of the James Bonds), Tony Curtis, Ringo Starr, Alice Cooper, George Hamilton, Walter Pidgeon, Dom De Luise, George Raft and Rona Barrett... not to mention Regis!! The film is a real stinker and very hard to watch to say the least... Mae must be at least 150 years old in this film and yet all these young guys are rabidly lusting after her... and of course does all her lines as Marlo Manners:
Reporter: How do you like it in London, Marlo?
Marlo Manners: Hmmm, I like it anywhere!
Marlo Manners: I'm the girl who works for Paramount all day, and Fox all night. (say it slow... you'll get it!)
Marlo Manners: I've never seen that position before.
Marlo Manners: Is that a gun in your pocket, or are you just glad to see me?

Keith Moon started his career as drummer in a surf band called the Beachcombers!

Well me heads out to see if me bign' Mary has leaned against the tree long enough to knock it down. Me ship needs repair and then me and me bign' Mary head back down the mississippi and hopefully catch a easterly wind....

sven--i just finished Dawn Patrol! how weird is that!
aside from telling a good pi/noir type story centering around a group of surfers... he also gives the reader some good surfing history & surf music time lines....
i was pleasantly surprised to discover that there are literally hundreds of new surf rock bands out there making new music all the time... esp since Pulp Fiction
now i'm reading a novel by Tim Winton an aussie... it's kind of a coming of age karate kid type story that's billed as a mystery but i don't see the mystery quite yet... and of course it's centered on two teenage boys who are mentored by a past surfing champion... some of the aussie slang throws me.... but so far a good read....
i recently heard a podcast interview with jack johnson who that very day had driven all the way from san diego to the rincon and back in one day... man that's dedication!

I don't think "Like Water For Chocolate" is especially interesting for a cook, or that surfing may excuse bad writing if the author excels in the sport, however, "Dawn Patrol", that combines the PI intrigue and the ocean waves around San Diego perhaps warrants a look.
Captain knows what the rest of us, non surfing pedestrians might not, that "dawn patrol refers to those who get out in the water early in the morning, hoping to score the best, non-windy waves".
The author, Don Winslow, says about his novel: "Dawn Patrol" is in a lot of ways about perpetual childhood. It?s kind of the Peter Pan syndrome that exists in surfing, where you?re doing this when you?re 11 and you?re doing it when you?re 50, and a lot of times you don?t grow up. But then you?re forced to."
Since we were witnessing some growing up in JFC, that book might be down our alley, or up our wave.
