There has been some interesting discussions about who should be John McCain's choice for his vice-presidential running mate. Some say that if Obama is the Democratic nominee, then McCain's VP should be a woman. Others say if Hillary Clinton is the Democratic nominee, then McCain's VP choice should be a black or other minority. I have seen speculation that Condoleeza Rice would fit both scenarios. What do you think about her choice for McCain's running-mate? Would it help or hurt his ticket? -- Jane HBO Forums Host

Constitutionally, Arnold is not eligible to be McCain's running mate, just as Bill Clinton is not eligible to be Hillary's running mate. You would have to have a constitutional amendment to allow either man to serve in direct line for the presidency. Even if Arnold had been born in this country, I think he is way too moderate for most Republicans. -- Jane HBO Forums Host -- Edited by Host_Jane at 03/15/2008 4:01 AM

I think in order of who would want it most it would be Romney, Huckabee, then Guliani. Huckabee might get the evangelical base behind him but I don't know if he would fall in line. Romney would do any thing to get in office and would be happy with it but I doubt he would help McCain's chances much. They would cover much of the same ground. Guliani would not help him in the sense of pulling in the base but he might help him appear as a middle of the road guy and gain critical swing states but it is hard to tell if Guliani is up for a national campaign at all based on his performance. Also the Guliani 9-11 fear factor could push people away depending on who the opponents are. Outside of that don't forget that the Bushes tried to push Jeb on him, also Condi Rice said she was not interested and that politics and running for office are not in her blood. Personaly I would like to see him pair up with Ron Paul, it would be very compelling but they don't agree on much publicly. Final thought, could Arnold be his running mate?

Are you friggin kidding me? After all that 'Obama's just here because he's black' crap, do you think repubs would openly choose a running mate for McCain on the basis of race or gender?

She would destroy his ticket. Thats way too much Bush for most people.. McCain needs to pick someone that didn't serve under Bush directly. He should probably pick a Democrat or independant...

Interesting ideas Jane. I am not sure that Condoleeza Rice carries the popularity (she's unfortunately played the barking dog of a failed foreign policy) that McCain would need to surmount the democratic nomination. In my opinion, if McCain wants a real shot at the White House, he needs to consolidate his base. A selection from Right, not from the centrist or fringe, is really his only option. He needs to ensure that red states remain red in the general election. -- Force and Mind are opposites; morality ends where a gun begins.
