President Karzai said he was pleased with the American military review of strategy, which focused on militant activity in the area. President Obama is planning on sending 4,000 troops to train Afghan security forces. Do you think this is wise? Is it a preliminary to declaring war? Or is it just what it is, a training mission? Is this a plan to the best way to reach bin Laden, as he is known to be hiding in the Afghan mountainous region?

You know, you are wasting your time talking to us about these things, DaN. Why don't you get a talk show so you can reach millions of people? I think that anyone who knows more than the President, the Generals, the Congress, and all of the ordinary folks should have the proper forum (pun intended) to impart his wisdom to the masses. We are all in the dark, except for you, oh wise one.

Jet, Excellent points, almost always lost in all of our discussions regarding the Afghans. The Al Qaeda connection in Afghanistan is now almost completely tenuous at best (thanks GW, Dick, Rummy, et al), and the Taliban, the actual resident ruling authority, was in fact the group to which Charlie Wilson diverted so much money and became so well renowned back in the 1980s, when the Soviet Union was playing the same fool's game that we are now. Funny how the wheel of history turns, even over such a VERY short time, and yet we, "first world, civilized, and educated people," fail to grasp the most rudimentary of lessons.

Yes, I support the troops too. That's why I want them HOME, out of harm's way, defending THIS country, not destroying countries that have done us no harm. The use of the word "enemy" is certainly a military term, quickly adopted by all the armchair generals we have. Why are the Afghans the enemy? We invaded their country, they did not invade ours. Even if one embraces the Official Fantasy, there were no Afghan hijackers involved.

Joe, You're right, the naivety does indeed get thick. It's also funny that the aggressor (the one imposing the collateral damage) rarely has any problem with it at all. No doubt the 9-11 agressors rightly expressed that same sentiment. Hey, shit happens, right?

Innocent people die in war, no matter the tactic. Prioritize. How much collateral damage is acceptable? Zero is hardly an option even if you believe in avoiding war altogether. People will come into conflict. Killing happens. I know that's not necessarily the point of this thread, but every now and then the naivety gets a little thick.

The insurgents have the advantage, in every way. I would rather we use drones when we have a target than try to send troops over land to get to it. Anything that gives our soldiers some protection from the enemy, I am for. I just don't know why the issue of drones is so controversial. Traditional bombing carries the risk of killing innocents. Anything other than hand to hand combat carries that risk. Is that what we should be doing? How about dueling?

JimEarl, The drone strikes in particular, have REALLY got to be a terribly effective way of winning hearts and minds. Can you even IMAGINE being subjected to that shit, especially with its associated collateral damage. Talk about an utterly chicken-shit way to wage a war.

solong, To each his own. Everyone's got his/her meme. Although, I have to add, all this war support would certainly be a lot more credible if everyone 18-30 had a reasonable chance of being tasked to go (drafted). Public opinion would turn overnight.
