Hugo Chavez was in Russia for the second time Friday. He expressed his support of Russia's actions in South Ossetia and they signed bilateral agreements on several areas including energy cooperations and a $1 billion arms agreement. In light of Russia's increasingly aggressive posture of late, in it's own geographical arena as well as towards the United States, and Chavez's continued disdain for the American government, and the fact that Russia deployed a Russian navy squadron to Venezuela Monday, is this a dangerous liaison for the United States? Will this change after our elections by the simple fact of change of command, or will the new president have to work hard to assert a formidable American presence? -- Edited by Host_DonnaA at 09/27/2008 5:36 AM PDT -- Edited by Host_DonnaA at 09/27/2008 5:40 AM PDT

GZN Thanks, yes Russia is a partner with NATO. Back in 1989 when the Soviet Union collapsed, I thought, well, there goes the reason for the existence of NATO. I thought that the organization would be disbanded, as its reason for existence had collapsed. It turns out that bureacracies get a life of their own, even one as large as NATO. Some years later Russia is offered a partnership. Don't spare the taxpayers, make the bureau even bigger. I guess if the Federation could have Klingon officers, anything is possible.

I should first say, I agree. Don't know if any negotiations will change Russia's attitude toward Georgia, but there is a NATO connection btn the two. NATO has 26 members, and 24 partners. Russia is one of the 24 NATO partner countries, and so is Georgia. There's also a NATO-Russia Council. http://www.nato.int/pfp/eapc-cnt.htm http://www.nato.int/issues/nato-russia/index.html -- Edited by Gzndhyt at 09/30/2008 12:09 PM PDT -- Edited by Gzndhyt at 09/30/2008 12:11 PM PDT

CBunny Just for the record, NATO was created to fight Russia. Russia is NOT a member of NATO, and strongly objects to membership for Georgia and other countries that border it. Just as we got all upset when Russia had missles in Cuba, they will be upset if we put missles in Poland. I understand their position totally.

It seems to me that chavez hates our government(bush administration) So do 80% of americans do too. I dont think this would be so scary to some if someone else was president , someone like john Mccain who would extend his hand in friend ship to someone like chavez in an effort to undo all the damage done in the last 8 years. Obama would just talk tough and make threats possible bomb chavez into the stone age bomb bomb bomb bomb bomb venez??????

I remember when Chavez was first elected, American newsmedia had nothing bad to say about him, and editorialists respected his agrarian stance and desire to secure Venezuela's wealth for Venezuela. I get a little creeped out about an arms deal with Russia - like we need a war between Venez and Columbia right now - but we treated them like dirt when we controlled their globalized industry, what choice did we leave them but to kick us out? Our war on drugs has been devastating to south American textiles made from hemp and coca, using it as an excuse to shut down trade lanes was just the straw that broke the camel's back. Stop me before I go all Rev Wright, seriously, but Venezuela owes us nothing, if we want their trust and loyalty we'll have to earn it - by buying all the coca we don't want sent to Columbian drug manufacturers.

Why must Chavez diplomatic relations with Russia, frighten Americans? Doesn't other countries have diplomatic relations with Russia? Including America. Russia and America are NATO allies, and we have various peace and nuclear agreements with Russia. Chavez is not a threat to America. So stop throwing out the fear card. Bush is currently using it concerning his bid to help out his friends at AIG. Our new president will have to work very hard to assert a formidable presence in Russia. It's like do as I say and..... Not as I do. Very contradicting foreign policy on aggressive posturing for political gain of power.

Keeping Russian sailors entertained is as easy as keeping Australian sailors entertained--whiskey and women work real well.

Good. Let Venezuela try to figure out how to keep Russian sailors entertained.

Bush is a diplomatic disaster. McCain would be as well. There may be no prospect of good relations with Venezuela. Perhaps the ideological differences are too great. Perhaps our efforts to improve relations with some Latin American countries will exacerbate our already poor relations with other Latin American countries (since they don't all get along well anyway). But that is no excuse not to try. -- [T]here is not a liberal America and a conservative America - there is the United States of America.

Is it any wonder? The heavy-handed gringo government has been disliked in South America for years, and that process has been accelerated and intensified under Dubya. How to Win Friends & Influence People, by Dubya.
