With more that 50,000 citizens feared dead, the majority of the food in the fields destroyed, no electricity, an official death toll of more than 21,000 and many offers of foreign aid, should the Myanmar government be made to open the country to allow aid to it's citizens?

Re: Myanmar Cyclone May 9, 2008 2:06 PM - jetstellef posts Either way, I guess we could force it on them if we wanted, they aren't exactly in a position to mount an assault and drive us out. 'Course, that's what we thought about Iraq... that was cute...you made me laugh

Donna, I think a more diplomatic approach would be for the US and other banned contributors to let personnel from countries the government WOULD let into their country have the goods we want to donate including use of our planes and helicopters to use to deliver them.

Well, I think the story is supposed to put the dilemma in the same light as our refusal of aid from Cuba after hurricane Katrina. Is Myanmar refusing help because her people don't need it, or are they simply refusing it from the countries they don't like? Either way, I guess we could force it on them if we wanted, they aren't exactly in a position to mount an assault and drive us out. 'Course, that's what we thought about Iraq...

Are they being offered their normal or what others want to give? If not then... No - they should not be made to do - yet that is my opinion They are afraid of the strings attached to the aid who can blame them for that or blame them for trying to make do with what they have with the state of politics. I am ignorant of how the people live in that region are they rice eaters Fish eaters Farmers/croppers The US still has NOT provided aid to its citizens or troops for them to not AID here first would be criminal. that's like feeding the neighbors and forcing your children into starvation. WE should give them time to recover right now they are paranoid - think of how the average person deals with death the bargaining The anger fear guilt/regret/shame etc... When they are ready they will come.... just GIVE them the help Even though they didn't come when you came a knocking. Then that would prove them right as not being an act of charity and being a political stragey. It you a steward of items with the purpose of giving...then YOU GIVE when the time comes. Or you force them and the first one with a armed forces base on their land WINS. -- Edited by ToriW at 05/09/2008 10:23 AM PDT

But, wait----you want us to send aid? I thought dems and liberals want the US to stay out of the problems of other countries and focus it's attention and aid on domestic tragedies??

Sovereignty. We need to wait for the invite. The immediate neighboring countries should have immediate access. -- Edited by infoseek at 05/06/2008 7:28 PM PDT
