Hello Bill Maher fans -
As you all know, due to the WGA strike there are no New Rules on Real Time with Bill Maher. However, with the primaries in full swing and Bush in the Middle East we recognize the need for them! So - we're creating this thread hoping that you'll tell us YOUR new rules!
If we get enough usable submissions, we'll put together a feature on HBO.com.

I give up trying to be better than the writers and Bill who write the official new rules. The last one about healthcare and profit motive was just over the top genius funny!

If the Mormons can detain, harass and arrest two gay men for a kiss on the cheek, and the holding of hands, while crossing through Church property; then I can detain, harass and arrest Mormon missionaries who come to my doorstep preaching the "Word of God"! And really, when two men show up on your doorstep, wearing matching clothes, with smiles on their faces, all I can help but think is, "am I in a porno? Did I schedule an orgy?"

new rule american citizens get to arrest policeofficers in their own homes for what we consider "disorderly conduct" hey police are suppose to protect and serve us. Not to abuse and twist the law to fuck us out of our rights. Who do they think they are the bush administration? no wait chenney would have shot gates in the face then made him apologize to him!

and get the HISTORY CHANNEL BACK to being 'the Hitler channel' as my girl friends in college in the 1990's used to call it......

To be fair, women are more prone to impulse buys (I believe) because there is a heavier emphasis on our appearance and the acceptance of our opinions can depend on whether or not our audience finds us aesthetically pleasing. Because it's a central issue (subconsciously), it becomes something we pay attention to more often.
Caché, while still relevant, has shifted from its 2007 definition (remember those crystal-encrusted T-Mobile sidekicks? 2007 fabulous is 2009 incredulous).
To be honest, I think the era of conspicuous consumption has taken a blow. Over the past several months, I've found that items are going on sale sooner, many items are offered at discount when they're "new releases," and some high-end luxury stores are having bigger & more frequent sales--retail numbers are still dismal (of course, summer is slow). Even as a non-fashion person, I've noticed that even among the luxury brands, they're subduing the plastering of logos everywhere (thank goodness). I think I saw in Elle or Vogue a little while back that "frugal is the new chic."
As a 20-something-college-kid, I don't really buy things the way I had...I'll wait for things to go on sale, I'll ask if stores do layaway, and I cut up my credit card. I switched from mocha lattés to earl grey tea with milk; healthier , tastier and less expensive.

Yeah, you can get a T-shirt a lot of places for $15. I doubt they'll sell many at that price in this economy but women especially will spend a lot more to feel chic, trendy & fashionable & because their friends have one. BUT you've got to make them feel the cache is worth the expense. Plus there's the impulse buying factor. Men usually buy something like clothes to fit a need not that we don't impulse buy other things.

Women's v-neck t-shirt, cotton...nothing spectacular.
Made in Vietnam.
It annoyed me because the designer's tag claims that "fashion can be affordable."
$57.00 for a t-shirt...that's half of my part-time job paycheck...
I can get something very similar at J.Crew for $22. It was just the oxymoron of an affordable, $57, cotton t-shirt.

The random dress shop in the middle of my college town cannot sell shirts that say "affordable fashion" on the label when they cost $57.00 each.
How many of those 'affordable shirts' have you sold this year?

new rule: you can't stand on the republican side of the aisle and critisize every single thing the president proposes when you have no real alternative yourself. i saw boehner on some show ripping obamas health care plan meanwhile he's holding his own plan that had less pages than a quiznos menu. what did it say on those pages, don't get sick? (cuz he didn't read any of it). i saw that douche bag michelle bachmann on tv; her plan on global warming? to deny it's happening. there's roughly 12000 scientists that have been studying this for years that say it's happening and we're part of the cause then there's a handful of republicans that get money from oil companies to swear it's a myth. gee, who's more credible?
