The Obama administration has taken a page from the Clintons-the trial balloon. The week before his Afgan speech the 30,000 troop number "leaked"out. If there had been a strong public reaction either way, he would have adjusted the figure accordingly. There was no strong reaction, thus the number didn't change. The speech was pure politics - increase the troops, placate the right- set a withdrawal date, placate the left. The left cannot complain as he is only following what he said in the campaign-pull out of Iraq, concentrate on Afgan. There will be more "balloons" in the future.

jetfuel: > Obamaphilia is waning. Meaningless rubbish. If you want to write about something that matters, write about the Repug Obstruction, their propagandists in the MSM and the utterly phony "Teabagger" movement.

Monkeypaw Been enjoying your posts. On Taibbi, he helps me by explaining things in a way I can understand. And I like his flavor and dash He reminds me of HST but without the zaniness.

Based on what we've all seen recently with Halliburton/Iraq it's possible this is one the conspiracy-theorists have right, that our entry was done to ramp up the profits of the MIC of the day. And we've seen how easily moved to warfare Congress can be. It isn't a new phenomenon, either. It was done even before that, under McKinley, with the cry of "The hell with Spain, remember the Maine!"

At their peak they had around 15% of the voting population, basically ran the Midwest and around a third of all politicians were affiliated. The main reason they didn't take over is because their leadership was incompetent.
