The Reverend Al Sharpton was one of 200 people arrested while the verdicts given in the Sean Bell shooting trial. Does Reverend Al still reflect the values of the Democratic party? Will this arrest help or hurt his political career?

I know. But there's no fear of that kind of solidarity when Bill Maher rakes random women over the coals in protest of Hillary. Sigh, but I guess I already knew that black men had more power to shame Bill Maher into silence than white women. Not really the point, this sort of think happens to the Rev all the time. The only reason it made a single headline is because he reminds people of Rev Wright at the moment.

Al Sharpton is just one of the political excentrics who inhabit any political party. The only electorate he needs to care about are his own constituents. When he becomes too outlandish for them, they will replace him. For many years, my Congressional representative was such a character. He was a fruit loop, but he was OUR fruit loop and he truly cared about the district. -- Jane HBO Forums Host -- Edited by Host_Jane at 05/12/2008 8:18 AM PDT

I can't imagine being arrested at a protest against police brutality against black men would harm Al Sharpton's reputation among democrats. I just wonder why Bill Maher isn't going around saying "hey, you black guys, acting crazy is not a good way to get a black man elected president."

> He's an asshole. NYC has enough problems with > traffic and congestion, people don't need that > nonsense on their way to where they need to be. He > could've done it in Central Park. I'm a NYer, and I get your point. But 50 shots?? And NOT ONE RETURN SHOT?? Didn't these cops notice the guys they were shooting at NEVER SHOT BACK ?? I am no stranger to shooting or being shot at,( military, not criminal) and I have to tell you, at 4 a.m., a pistol going off in your direction spits some fire, some noise and hits things around you. you WILL notice if you are being shot at from 10-20 feet away on a quiet, residential street at 4 a.m. As for the traffic, with the UN here, everytime some head of state comes to town with his police escort and limo convoy, streets are jammed and even closed. Traffic is ruined for the day. And it usually sucks anyway! As for Rev. Al, he may be a grandstanding publicity hound, but forget him and think of the families. Who gets them help? Who gets their case attention?? Who gives these victims a voice? This happens all the time, and if its only the family calling for justice, the MSM forgets it the next day or so. A Central Park rally would have created no inconvenience, therefore not creating the awareness and publicity the case deserves. Now a US Congressman of the House Judiciary Committee is going to investigate and have hearings. If not for Sharpton, if the widow just wrote the Congressman a letter or E-mail, do you think he'd be there?? Think what you want about Sharpton or the guys that got shot, but its not a death penalty crime to be drunk and rowdy after your bachelor party. An undercover officer not wearing a 'Raid Jacket', the windbreaker that ID's cops not in uniform, runs up to their car on a dark street at 4 am, yells STOP, and thinks he sees a passenger reach down for 'something' and he opens fire. Then his partners follow suit and not one of them notices the lack of return fire?? One of them actually reloaded and fired some more! Were their eyes closed?? That one fired 30 shots!! Their Lt. didn't fire his weapon. Why?? Because he knew NOBODY was shooting at them. And look at Philly, what kind of Police Academy produces these thugs? And Rodney King? And 10,000 others we'll never hear about. Hey, they're guilty of DWB, right? -- all it takes for evil to triumph is to vote republican! -- Edited by spydoy1 at 05/09/2008 9:25 AM PDT -- Edited by spydoy1 at 05/09/2008 9:29 AM PDT

NYTimes Police Beating of Suspects Is Taped by TV Station in Philadelphia By JON HURDLE Published: May 8, 2008 PHILADELPHIA ? About 12 police officers were videotaped on Monday beating three men stopped in response to a drug-related shooting, and six of the officers have been removed from patrols, Police Commissioner Charles H. Ramsey said Wednesday. In the incident, captured by a Fox TV helicopter, officers surrounded a car carrying the three men. They were pulled from the car, and two were kicked and punched on the ground by officers on the driver?s side. The third man was beaten by other officers on the passenger side. The incident, on Monday night, in the Hunting Park section followed the shooting death of Sgt. Stephen Liczbinski, 39, a 12-year member of the force, on Saturday in the nearby Port Richmond section. Sergeant Liczbinski was pursuing three robbery suspects. The police arrested a man sought in the case late Wednesday night, the Associated Press reported. Another was arrested on Sunday, and a third was fatally shot by an officer shortly after the officer?s killing, The A.P. said. Mr. Ramsey said at a news conference that the police were under great ?stress and pressure? after Sergeant Liczbinski?s death. He is the third Philadelphia officer to be killed in the line of duty in the last two years. But, Mr. Ramsey added, there was no excuse for the behavior on the videotape. The video is being examined to try to identify more officers involved in the beatings. Mr. Ramsey said he expected more officers to be reassigned to administrative duties as a result. District Attorney Lynne Abraham will decide on filing criminal charges against the officers, Mr. Ramsey said. The new mayor, Michael A. Nutter, has emphasized reducing the violence that has given Philadelphia one of the highest murder rates in the nation. Mr. Nutter and Mr. Ramsey are trying to overcome decades of distrust between the mostly black residents of areas like North Philadelphia and a largely white police force. The beating victims, all from North Philadelphia, have all been charged with assault, conspiracy and recklessly endangering another person. D. Scott Perrine, a lawyer for the three, called the incident a blatant example of police brutality. ?We have not seen stuff like this since the 1960s and the 1970s in Philadelphia,? Mr. Perrine said. ?These officers are criminals, and they should be prosecuted.? He denied that his clients had any connection with the shooting of Sergeant Liczbinski, and he said the Police Department was seeking to explain the ?zealousness? of the officers in the incident by saying the force as a whole was distressed and exhausted by the sergeant?s death. The three men are being held on bail, awaiting a preliminary hearing on May 16. -- Edited by RainyKincaid at 05/08/2008 2:27 AM PDT

hi Jim, Well, I think so. Reuters, NEW YORK (Reuters) - Civil rights activist the Rev. Al Sharpton and dozens of others were arrested on Wednesday for stopping traffic to protest the acquittal of policemen who killed an unarmed black man with 50 shots on his wedding day. Protests like that, civil disobedience I think is the criminal charge, are historically a non-violent method of protest much like Ghandi promoted, right? I believe black Americans suffer more than any other group from police brutality. It's a problem that never completely goes away. I'm sure other Americans suffer from it too, but disproportionately black people do. We watched a horrible case like that on the news tonight that happened in Philly a few days? ago I think. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NhyC7SdVE2E It was just like Rodney King. If we created a thread dedicated just to black people suffering police brutality it would be a very very long sad thread with hundreds of cases. Sharpton and Jackson are advocates who fight this. I call that upholding democratic ideals. -- Edited by RainyKincaid at 05/07/2008 11:53 PM PDT -- Edited by RainyKincaid at 05/08/2008 2:22 AM PDT

He's an asshole. NYC has enough problems with traffic and congestion, people don't need that nonsense on their way to where they need to be. He could've done it in Central Park.
