The death of Senator Kennedy marks the 7th vacancy in Senate since the elections. That means that some of our most populous states are currently being represented by senators that were not elected. Should the current system be continued, or should special elections be held so that replacement senators are fairly elected by the constituency?

Is that what Sean Hannity said on his radio show?

Nobody's happy with the system of replacement, just ask NYers. Hillary's seat was filled by illiterate Gov. Paterson's appointment of fellow dim-witted, ersatz Dem, Gilly.

The constitution leaves it to each state to decide.

Ideally a special election should take place. But, it takes a long time for candidates to announce and campaign so that the voters understand who is who. As in the case of Illinois, a governor under federal indictment appointed a buffoon to fill President Obama's vacant seat, so that isn't ideal either.
