A little over a week after Tim Russert's timely death, we have lost another well-known, influential, and beloved American. The always hilarious George Carlin, perhaps best known for his list of "Seven Words You Can't Say On TV," died of heart failure in Los Angeles a short time ago. Carlin's death came only 5 days after the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts announced that the comedian would be honored with the Mark Twain Prize for American humor. shit shit shit i loved that guy. -- "What is a man, if his chief good and market of his time be but to sleep and feed? A beast, no more. Surely, He that made us with such large discourse, looking before and after, gave us not that capability and God-like reason to fust in us unused."

OT: I'm surprised Jesse Helms lasted so long since he failed to have a heart his whole life long. Miss you, George.

Thank you George for this !!!! Religion convinced the world that there's an invisible man in the sky who watches everything you do. And there's 10 things he doesn't want you to do or else you'll go to a burning place with a lake of fire until the end of eternity. But he loves you! ... And he needs money! He's all powerful, but he can't handle money! """""""""""""""""""""""" I guess if they are going to force those kids to pray in schools they might as well have a nice prayer like this: Our Father who art in heaven, and to the republic for which it stands, thy kingdom come, one nation indivisible as in heaven, give us this day as we forgive those who so proudly we hail. Crown thy good into temptation but deliver us from the twilight's last gleaming. Amen and Awomen.

Yes George was a --grumpy old man'' -- His lavatory humor was not funny but then there were no barriers for george !!!! He was interested in showing just how '' stupid'' and ''funny'' we humans are and he did it so well !!!! Perhaps people didn't realize just how serious he was when he poked the fun finger at almost everything. He was deadly serious about Religion being the root of most evil !!!

I recorded The marathon of George Carlin specials that HBO aired last week, and have watched the first one (from 1977). George was funny, sexy, energetic. His jokes were based on day-to-day existance. The Vietnam war was over, life was good, and there was every hope that the future would only be better. Fast forward to the past year or two. George was a serious, bitter, angry old man who wasn't even funny. I thought he had lost his edge, but in retrospect I see I was wrong. George Carlin was a man who cared deeply, and it was not his way to make jokes about ordinary life when there were such serious problems that needed to be spoken of. Not that a tragicomic approach is wrong; Bill Maher is able to see and portray the humor about the worst of circumstances, but he pulls it off because he cares as deeply as George Carlin did. Even my Dad died deeply disappointed with the way the world had turned out. I wish George Carlin was still alive so I could cheer him on. He was one of the good guys. -- QTeela (Teela with a Q)

And what to do about robotically brainlocked hermetically sealed zealots who project utterly non-existent thoughts and motives on another poster's mentality? This conversation is over. We are all full of sadness for what is happening in the KILLING FIELDS of the Middle East. All caused by the Judie/Christian Crusade against Islam !!!!! So when Anyone says Bless you , or have mercy on His soul , we will remember him in our prayers, etc etc all those Zombie code exclamations respecially about a Ex Catholic like George Carlin who saw through the BS is insulting !!!! What is it about Evangelicals & other Christian types who assume that everyone is a Religious Zombie ???

I laughed at your post because I felt you must be joking! But, on second thought, I realized that I should have phrased it "greatness of soul". A term those who lived before the 60's would have understood completely without further explanation. In any event, I was referring to George Carlin's spiritual qualities when speaking of his great "soul", and not his sensitivity to Black culture and mores in the pop cultural semantic parlance. Nevertheless, and with all due respect, Housebird, it's impossible for me to imagine anyone who is familiar with either meaning or semantic nuance of the word to take any kind of offense therefrom, least of all, the sensitive George Carlin, truly a Man for All Seasons. The art George Carlin's great soul !!!!! One of his deepest laments was over the penchant of America's elected leaders to bomb "little brown people" on behalf of a society to whom the individual and collective humanity of such victims remains as foreign as the places they live on the map. CleopatraVIII *********************************************** CleopatraVIII, Well said about the ''brown people'' but what's with the ''soul'' thing ??? Sad to say any mention of these ''code'' words turns me off & would have turned our George Carlin off too ??? G.W. Bush with all his code words & the religios are responsible for a LOT OF SPILT BLOOD and a lot of TEARS--because the rest of America was asleep to these ''code'' words !! All the ''Fairy story Christian Religios'' out there want to do is cajole any & every human into their club !!!! Hoping you are not one !!!

You're welcome for the posting of George Carlin's "Life's Lessons" Donna. Julie, Housebird, Rainy and Donna, I've felt this loss very keenly too. He was one of the few performers to whom I've felt such a connection in my life that I saw him perform live when he came to my area on tour. When Julie asked whether it was pompous to suggest that great suffering can forge great art, we need look no further than Van Gogh and to the truth that for someone possessing the talent to give it to us, they must also possess a great soul. The art George Carlin's great soul produced was the articulation of a blazing sense of our flawed humanity and a dreamscape for how to improve it. One of his deepest laments was over the penchant of America's elected leaders to bomb "little brown people" on behalf of a society to whom the individual and collective humanity of such victims remains as foreign as the places they live on the map. He left us wondering whether, this time around, he would have emerged from his alienation and cast a vote for the candidate with the funny name who has promised to end the bombing of the "little brown people" in the Middle East. Here, I give you Don McLean's "Vincent", to commemorate the suffering and the great soul and art of George Carlin: "Starry, starry night paint your palette blue and grey look out on a summer's day with eyes that know the darkness in my soul. Shadows on the hills sketch the trees and the daffodils catch the breeze and the winter chills in colors on the snowy linen land. And now I understand what you tried to say to me how you suffered for your sanity how you tried to set them free. They would not listen they did not know how perhaps they'll listen now. Starry, starry night flaming flowers that brightly blaze swirling clouds in violet haze reflect in Vincent's eyes of China blue. Colors changing hue morning fields of amber grain weathered faces lined in pain are soothed beneath the artist's loving hand. And now I understand what you tried to say to me how you suffered for your sanity how you tried to set them free. They would not listen they did not know how perhaps they'll listen now. For they could not love you but still your love was true and when no hope was left in sight on that starry starry night. You took your life as lovers often do; But I could have told you, Vincent this world was never meant for one as beautiful as you. Starry, starry night portraits hung in empty halls frameless heads on nameless walls with eyes that watch the world and can't forget. Like the stranger that you've met the ragged men in ragged clothes the silver thorn of bloody rose lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow. And now I think I know what you tried to say to me how you suffered for your sanity how you tried to set them free. They would not listen they're not listening still perhaps they never will. RIP, George Carlin, and thoughts and prayers for your family, friends and fans throughout the world. Cleo -- "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing." Edmund Burke "I have spread my dreams under your feet; Tread softly because you tread on my dreams." From "He Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven", W.B. housebird, Have read a few encouraging articles concerning the 'evangelicals' indicating they might be having a change of heart politically and are starting to think about things like helping poor people, etc. There is hope I enjoyed Carlin immensely but he was like the people I'm always arguing with who say it's no use who we vote for might as well not bother because everything's controlled by some big secret cabal of some kind. I argue apathy steals what little control we do have.
