This thread will probably die quickly, but I thought I'd try and have fun with it anyway. In honor of Halloween, I thought we could share what scares us. OK, I'll go first. Clowns, people speaking at length in unison, those Precious Moments figurines, electronic voice phenomena (real or faked, the voices sound metallic) and the great old film The Cabinet of Dr Caligari.

And a good time to ask them, "What would Jesus do?" my suggestions or try to defeat gay marriage? Maybe you can post their responses.

I live in California. I have Mormon family that gave money to support prop 8 and then asked me why should I care. Right....they're idiots and they have the right to their own stupidity...as I have a right to mine. -- Edited by MarkMiller at 11/02/2009 8:12 PM PST

Ok, she has really small snakes then. That does make a big difference. -- Edited by magialuna at 11/02/2009 3:58 PM PST

I use coconut hull on the cage floors for easy clean up and it helps keep the humidity correct. (The GTP has to have high humidity or his shed sticks.) In winter I do back off to on demand feeding because they eat less then. The best part about snakes? Their pee is a solid, white mass easy to pick up with a paper towel.

Hopefully she won't learn the hard way, or I should say hopefully her animal won't need stitching or surgery like some I've seen. Imo it's akin to letting your dog run free and then be shocked when it gets hit by a car. And with that I will butt out.

Magi - I told her what you said, and she said she knows people believe that. She works in a lab and gets the mice that were bred there. She works for PhD herpetologists and isn't going to argue with them She said that kingsnake.com sells frozen mice, so want you to buy them. As far as being humane is concerned, she says it is better than freezing to death (for the mice). So, I don't know, magi. It's not my job. -- Edited by wickyharpy at 11/02/2009 2:40 PM PST

> I don't find snakes scary or creepy but as far as > having them as pets, what's that like Mags? do they > form any kind of bonds with each other or people? Rainy: It depends on the handler and the snake. I've had rattlesnakes that were just outright mean tempered no matter how I handled them. My Ball Python is a rescue. He was dying when my squad brought him into the station. (They got him out of a busy intersection.) He had a 4" cut on his abdomen and was way too cold, so I kept him against my body inside my uniform because it was the only heat source available in that ice box of a station. I ran him straight to the vet when I got off duty that morning. He had to keep him over a month...do surgery..and use several meds to get rid of 3 different infections. (They kept him in an incubator). Once I got him home he got extra TLC and handling, and to this day I swear that snake KNOWS the difference between my heat signature (that what they "see") and my husband's. He'll strike at the cage glass when hubby walks by, but I can be standing there with the cage door open holding a hot, thawed rat in tongs and he never strikes. He waits until I offer it to him. My Green Tree Python was a breeder male. Most breeders are aloof, and he was just that when I got him. Now I can pick him up and he enjoys riding around on my shoulder (as does the Ball), and I can hold his rear down in a sink of warm water and he never offers to bite. (It's done when they get clogged up). Snakes don't give outward affection like a cat or dog, but yes, they do get familiar with ya if you show them the right attention. Many folks just shove them in cage and rarely handle them...that's not my style. ...So you tell me? Can they bond? Wicky: Tell your daughter that is a HUGE nono...feeding live anything to the snake. I order my rats from BigAppleHerp, and they sell everything for feeding (rats, mice, umm..you don't want to know the rest.) I'd rather have a lab raised, disease free frozen rat that I thaw when needed, and feeding live is a gamble on your snake getting injured. Tell her this isn't just me saying so...it's a herper rule of thumb. (Tell her to just read at Kingsnake dot com).

They are pretty impersonal, somewhere between a fish and a small mammal. They definitely have personal preferences although, I'm not sure if you could really call it a bond per se.

I hope magi gives her view, but I'll say that my daughter likes them like any pet. What they feel, I can't say. I wouldn't want one that I had to care for because she feeds them live mice and cleaning the tanks is a chore. She has birds too. I'll stick to cats and dogs.
