Being one of those college educated middle class "elites", I am frustrated to no end by the idiocy of this gas tax holiday proposal. In market pricing, price is determined by the amount available for sale and the purchasing power/desire of those seeking to obtain the product or service. The tax paid on a gallon of gas makes up a portion of the purchase price but plays no role in determining price. For example, if you pay $4 for a gallon on gas and the the tax is 50cents, then you pay $4 and the remaining $3.50 goes becomes gross revenue for the supplier. If you remove the 50cent tax, the price is still $4. So how much would go to the supplier? Right, $4. Suppose the gas tax is repealed. This would create a scenario where more could afford to purchase fuel. Good, right? Maybe not. We would still have the same amount available for sale but with more purchasers. The result? Not enough gas to go around. You would be able to afford fuel but their would be no guarantee that the fuel would be available for purchase. Ask Jimmy Carter if that is a good idea. The reality is that the market would prevent a shortage from occuring by increasing the price 50cents so that demand was decreased to the point that only the amount of fuel available would be sold. The only difference is that the oil companies would make an extra 50cents a gallon. Great Idea McClinton.

How idiotic can you people be to take a 3 month tax break on gas as anything worth taking serious. Its just like this 300/600 $ rebate for this past tax year. These are election year gimicks that are being thrown at you to pull the wool over your eyes. Your all brainwashed. If you don't wake up you never will. -- Edited by scoobeedoo at 05/08/2008 10:04 PM PDT

What are the solutions to the high gasoline prices Obama is talking about? Did Clinton said she's going to stop with this patch. I thought I heard Clinton talked about decrease reliance on oil, funding alternative fuels, as well as taking it up to the cartels. Nothing less than Obama, yet everyone here bought into the bullshit MSM piled on, "it's not a long term solution." NO. Really?!?!

> info, what are you today? neocon, paleocon, hillary > supporter, paul supporter or porn addict? Porn is a constant. I switched between Clinton and neocon, which is the same, to most here. I am still a Paul supporter on certain things. Hell, one can support everything he's all about and still have room to fill a room of liberals then some. Paul's simplicities allow blames to be placed on others with ease.

Gas tax holiday is a bunch of political crap. Overall it won't save the average person that much and still doesn't address the larger problem. I say instead of a gas tax holiday we should all come together and vow not to buy gasoline for one full week. As for this tax rebate I plan on thumbing my nose at Mr. Bush and putting mine in its own account and let it earn interest for the next 100 years........LOL Peace, If not now......................When?? -- If it is not advantageous, do not move. If objectives cannot be attained, do not employ the army. Unless endangered do not engage in warfare. The ruler cannot mobilize the army out of personal anger....When it is advantageous, move; when not advantageous, stop. Anger can revert to happiness, annoyance can revert to joy, but a vanquished state cannot be revived, the dead cannot be brought back to life..... Sun-Tzu Art of War

NAFTA needs some work. Please keep in mind there are two major unions EU and BRICS coming at us at full speed. Please don't go into bros before hos right now. The rest of the rumors are all just non-racial, non-sexual, non-sensational white collar discrepancies, so no big shit. They are just a little blurps on the screen.

Just got back from the pump at Costco. $3.8x and premium is $4+ Something is most definitely wrong when items you can't stock are leading the inflation. The word out in Los Angeles wholesale district is, everything in China have almost doubled and we'll be seeing the effect in about 1-2 mos. I don't give a shit about China's economic well-being, but until we see factories start going up in the states, the poor will be paying.

> Obama, the > Economists and the Gas Tax Holiday! > & mark, i have to disagree with your video there, old pal. lots of economists are already saying we are in a "recession" even though nothing reported has recessed yet and i did hear, see, read etal oil company execs say they would raise prices as high as they could, as soon as they could every time. cutting the gas tax would have to include a moratorium on raising gas prices and no one.....i mean no one on this planet is going to stop that from happening, least of all the giant nitwit in the oval office or the vested cabinet members or the lobbied congress. -- 100
