To test your speed go to this site and choose the city closet (closest)to you. Instead of letting automatic updates slow your machine down, run windows update manually and get the updates out the way. After SP3 there are another 60 updates and a few of like Netframework are large.

"am trying to clear clutter from K's 'puter. six year collective of everything.doubt files have ever been deleted or caches cleared. toolbar looks like cnbc scroller at noon. so many shortcuts on home page it looks like a stamp collection. egad. RUUUUUUUUU" I was at a Halloween party with my previous boss and the friend I recommended to replace me when I left. They were joking about all the backups I left behind, and how, a year later, they found yet another one. I too have a desktop full of shortcuts. I feel your stress, but my behaviour is reinforced by the rare times when something I saved is useful.
