Instead of letting automatic updates slow your machine down, run windows update manually and get the updates out the way. After SP3 there are another 60 updates and a few of like Netframework are large.

Thanks so much for the advice, hon. Maybe the slowdown I'm still experiencing is those 60 post SP3 updates.

I was at a Halloween party with my previous boss and the friend I recommended to replace me when I left. They were joking about all the backups I left behind, and how, a year later, they found yet another one. I too have a desktop full of shortcuts. I feel your stress, but my behaviour is reinforced by the rare times when something I saved is useful.

I was premature in celebrating my puter fix up process because now my computer's very slow, something's still not right. I thought I'd successfully installed Windows Serivce Pack 3 but have since realized it didn't finish installing and I think it's working in the background trying to install over and over and running into some roadblock. It doesn't show up on my task manager as a running process but I can hear my puter whirring away and it will slow way down.

So far, it's over my head as to how to delete the service pack 3 installation files. It never finished installing so it's not on the list of programs I can delete via the control panel.

I'm stuck.

Reading the Microsoft advice sites makes me laugh and think of the PC and Mac guys...lol

Jim,

I've been using a free program called Glary Utilities. It helps you do all those clean up jobs faster and easier than hunting through Windows to find them.

It cleans tracks, cookies, caches, temp files.
It deletes duplicate files.
It cleans up obsolete files, shortcuts to nowhere, junk left from uninstalling programs.
etc.

It fixes the registry files - BUT, I think that's where I goofed up somehow, so be careful with that one.

I don't know that this is a virus. It's a page that opened from an e-mail with WordPress. It's a donation page for California Correctional Peace Officers Association. Not like it was porn or anything.

I'll try anything at this point.

Enhanced Interrogation Techniques
Dick Cheney has recently threatened to not cooperate with a Justice Department probe. Since we are in a time of war and they are trying to find out information of national security, would enhanced interrogation techniques be appropriate?
