http://www.petroalgae.com/ They use specially-bred algae that has an extremely high oil yield to create oil (it's cleaner than petroleum oil). Also, it uses 2% as much space to grow as other biofuels such as ethanol. Another plus is that the algae absorbs large amounts of carbon dioxide from the air and uses it to make the oil. So, this algae is truly carbon neutral (unlike ethanol) and can be used to fuel vehicles, plus its byproducts can be used as a safer fertilizer and animal feed. And unlike ethanol, it does not take massive amounts of corn out of the world's food stocks, so it avoids what some have called "a world hunger disaster" that would result from corn-based ethanol. i'd like to see clean + safe energy. some folks even use waste cooking oil from fast food chains.
plus, any thing that can reduce our foreign oil consumption will be good to a certain extent. no sense in funding "terrorists" by importing from saudis.
i read there are mega natural gas deposits on the atlantic shelf.
let's see if the tighty righties will go along with that.
or will it be a bad idea because it may cut into some deep pocketed issues?

Ethanol has its roots in democracy. The average land owner is the key to Ethanol. The average American is once again the key to our future.
We have twice as much land as we need in people who are bush hogging land that is vacant. Tobacco farmers are being paid not to grow. The Peach farms pulled there trees up in South Carolina. Millions upon millions upon millions of acres of land with grass on it across the land of people who quit farming 30-40 years ago.
Not Exxon, Not Chevron, Shell or BP can accomplish ethanol at high volume consistently. If they try to clear enough land for Exxon Saudi Shell BP and Chevron to do ethanol for us it will make the enviroment worse.
The crooks have got to loose their power isn't that funny. Tell me there is no God.
We the people are the only ones with enough land to make Ethanol happen and the subsidy will have to turned on to we the people.
I love it I think is funny. If we allow the average people to grown crops to produce ethanol it will save a soul from death and hide a multiple of sins.
I want to you to hear this.
IF WE ALLOW THE AVERAGE LAND OWNER IN THIS COUNTRY TO BE BROUGHT IN ON THE SUBSIDY AND TAKE PART IN GROWING ETHANOL CROPS WE WILL WIN THIS BATTLE.
Instead of the other people getting all the good out of our government what is wrong with some poor man with a hundred acres of land in California way out in the middle of no where in an old house getting a one hundred thousand dollar check to buy a tractor seed and fertilizer.
Friends that is Democracy. That is what Ethanol is rooted in and that is what America is rooted in. Not new land our land. Not South America middle america. I love ya'
I know I'm hard on some of you but we got to get back to what works and back off what doesn't work. America was made great by what works.
What works is is what Ethanol is rooted in. Lets get back to the root of America. That is what John Adams was about that is what The King Men. Making every person count not a few stealing what we the people have made.
I'm ready, I give my all to the salvation of My house and town and neighbors. My friends, my job, my kids. I love my children that is my roots Ethanol is found in that. I don't care what people say about me what I say can hurt.
When I think about my sons fighting a 100 year war for Dick Cheney. Hell no Jack. I have stuck my foot up his ass politically now he has got to pay financially and criminally.
The lie to go to war was his idea and manipulation Exxon and Saudi shell got to go down baby.
That is the root of ethanol are found in. The patriotic thing to do is to fight for ethanol and God will make free.
Bill I love ya you are a patriot as some of your ideas are.

I agree with this. The UN and is not really interested in a solution because a solution does not support it's agenda. Same can be said for Al Gore and probably most environment groups with money invested in green propaganda.

I've been casually looking into this "breakthrough" for a few months without much success in finding specifics. It sounds a little too good to be true -- which means it probably isn't.
Nevertheless, still looking am ..

With all the anti-nuclear nuts who oppose clean nuclear energy , that produces ounces of waste instead of billions of tons, it is just a matter of time before some minor issue is overblown into an endangered species/human footprint propaganda hit.
Green is still the color of greed, and this algae doesn't enrich the UN or enviro-wackos.
