I know I put my mom through hell. We are really the best of friends now, but it was anything but smooth sailing through those years.

That's the leap from child to teen. I found out the best way to have a talk with my teen was to go someplace in the car together. Much later in her life she told me that it was easier to talk to me when she didn't have to look right at me.
