We're in complete agreement on that, pbj, the bill does include subsidies for those having difficulties making their premium payments. It also would extend unsubsidized COBRA coverage to older employees and longer-service employees until they are eligible for Medicare. The extension would be available for employees who worked for an employer for at least 10 years or have attained age 55. This would differ from current law on which COBRA coverage terminates after 18 months in most situations.

Most folks don't have any idea what their employers are paying in the way of premiums. We just had our annual insurance meeting. We were all convinced that the company had decided to go with an HMO. They didn't. In fact, they kept everything the same. Our deductible is $300. I thought for sure that would go up, but it didn't. Our company president went up against the board of directors and he won.

COBRA premiums in too many cases are more than what a laid-off worker recieves in unemployment benifits. Any viable health care policy will address this.

Also, I see COBRA is basically at 18 months of coverage now unless some other factor, such as disability, extends the mandatory lifespan. Group insurers, however, may voluntarily extend a member's eligibility for as long as they wish.

> Your COBRA payment is the cost of your premium > without your employer's contribution. The new > healthcare plan, whatever form it takes, will only > change the time limit on COBRA, I believe. It won't > make the premiums any less expensive. ...the premium escalates quite differently..in the group plan I had, everyone paid same premium irrespective of age, pre-existing condition etc etc ( it was a partnership )..not so once on COBRA although don't know if there are limits on escalation on account of age etc..I wasn't expecting COBRA to be addressed under new plan. I guess they are focusing on those who can't pay COBRA..probably quite rightly...given intention is to widen coverage
