I don't try to Bible Thump God into your head. I was wondering if you would please stop trying to Bible Slap God out of my head. Would you please? I agree with you on most of your content 100%, and then some. But your war on God is getting old. I don't push God on you. Please grant myself and other #1's on the Dawkins Scale the same courtesy. Thank you

socialsatyr, Good point, that. Christians, Muslims and Jews only believe in their own god myth, discounting all the others that people around the world believe in. You'd think that would make them more sympathetic to atheists not believing in theirs.

When I was a kid who went to Sunday school all the time, I remember one particular day where the teacher had to explain to a student that his dog that had died would not go to heaven, for only people go to heaven.. I remember because he sobbed for the entire duration of the class. So do you suggest that there are separate Gods for each for each of the species, that children being born is an act of God while animals being born is an act of science, or is it simply that my Sunday school teacher was a lying bitch? -- Say what? -- Edited by MykulWayne at 04/15/2008 11:58 AM PDT

I don't know much about the new Pope. I think I remember hearing something about him trying to influence the last few presidential elections, though, by requiring priests to ex-communicate anyone in their church who voted for a pro-choice candidate. I guess they'd have to have a don't ask, don't tell policy to avoid that. He's the man responsible for ordering US church management to maintain a vow of secrecy about all of the church pedo's crimes, ordering them not to turn them into the police, etc. (I think this is a world-wide problem, by the way, not only in the US). Like all the other catholic CEO's he's sticking with antiquated notions about birth control, abortion, etc. (issues concerning women's rights regarding their own bodies) to the point that he forbids members to use condoms (oblivious to the problem of the spread of STDs including AIDS). Their church is the only one that's created it's own country which I believe has a 100 percent male citizenship. This means they're financially free from any oversight. I believe their treasury is Top Secret. I don't know if the other big religions in the world require career members to be celibate but it seems like such a mentally unhealthy requirement.

Dagwoods, When American atheists complain about religion it's as a minority trying to survive within a Christian majority country. Religions influence politics so much, I think that's when we really feel our rights aren't equally respected. The constitution protects our religious rights but implied is also the freedom from religion. I'm not sure but I think our peer countries, Canada, Australia, the UK...they're not as religiously dominated as we are here in the US.

"I feel pretty comfotable with my level consciousness, BUT your levle of arrogance and ignorance can only be measured on the Richter scale it's so large. BTW the Richter scale is logarithmic, but that may be too large for even your mightly mind to grasp." You hypocritical Xtians are really funny! Coming off all pious, you make statements. Someone questions these statements, and you go ape shit, reverting to what you were at some previous point in evolution.

First off, sorry for just chiming in like I am. A lot of what I say could have already been said, but I have a limited lunch break and there's 26 pages of replies. So with that said... I am a non-practicing Catholic who has spaced myself from the church as a result of their views on homosexuality and their reluctance to speak out against war. I also respect all religious views including the views of an atheist. I also find it appalling even to have "In God We Trust" on American currency. I only say this so you understand I'm not some bible thumping evangelist. But I guess Maher's comments last Friday were a little over the line. For one, his remarks regarding the pope are extremely false. Him calling Benedict a nazi sympathizer is just stupid. Remember that at that time in Germany, EVERY CHILD was forced to sign up for what he did (The Hitler Youth). Maher forgot to mention that Benedict refused to attend a single meeting and also had his cousin murdered by the nazi army. Besides that, I have never once considered any atheist delusional for not believing in anything spiritual. But it seems every atheist I speak to finds me to be delusional to believe in the possibility of the afterlife, or a creator, or ANYTHING beyond what we know scientifically. Why is that? I hear how stupid humans are to ever believe that there are creatures we do not know about. But it seems every year we find MANY that have so long gone undetected. I understand that is a pretty sloppy comparison, but my point is that things aren't as cut and dry as some (from the faithful AND non-faithful) may want us all to believe. Last point. I am disgusted with the way the Catholic church has handled the abuse scandal. It is morally and ethically deplorable. I would also like to state that Benedict has publicly called it despicable as well. He is not John Paul II, he actually speaks out against this garbage, and other garbage like global warming, hunger, and our governments refusal to DO SOMETHING. It's not the answer. But it's definitely a move in the right direction.

Hey "prettywitty", I feel pretty comfotable with my level consciousness, BUT your levle of arrogance and ignorance can only be measured on the Richter scale it's so large. BTW the Richter scale is logarithmic, but that may be too large for even your mightly mind to grasp. WOW, I must say, your response does prove my point. Ever heard of Effexor, Cymbalta or any other pertinent meds that might help you? Hey, impress me oh' mighty brain! That actually would be VERY Christian of you....just not very Christ-like. > > Whereas, if they are wrong, they will have spent this > lifetime as unhappy, cynical people. So all atheists are unhappy, cynical people? Keeping track of them all, are ya? *rme* > And if they > think they are happy, then I need to correct the > above statement to "unhappy, delusional, cynical > people". From here, the will spend eternity thinking > WTF, how could I have got it so wrong. Wow. You have reached heights of arrogance I didn't think could be reached, outside of the Bush administration. Psssst....I think that's a sin, btw. Just sayin'.... > > I'm not a betting man, but I'm glad I'm on my side > side and not theirs. This whole betting idea....it's not yours. When you rip someone off like that, you should credit the source. I think that would be the moral thing to do. > By the way, why are they always > so angry? I don't think they are all always angry either. That's like me saying "Why are all believers in God so arrogant, condescending and ignorant?", just because it seems to be true of you personally.

"In order for them to be right, a billion "what ifs" and random acts have to be recognized as a given facts without question." The thing is, those billions of details are looked at, examined and analyzed so that we might understand what was previously written off as "acts of god." So, if anyone accepts the unknown without question, it's not those who don't believe in god and Jebus.

I have been thinking about Mr Maher's and other athetists comments on the reality of God, and I have come to this conslusion. In order for them to be right, a billion "what ifs" and random acts have to be recognized as a given facts without question. Whereas, for the theory that I believe in, only one, The One, has to be believed in and the rest falls into place; "talkin' snake and all". If I'm wrong, I have spent my time on earth as a decent, happy, productive member of society. From there I will be worm food for eternity. Whereas, if they are wrong, they will have spent this lifetime as unhappy, cynical people. And if they think they are happy, then I need to correct the above statement to "unhappy, delusional, cynical people". From here, the will spend eternity thinking WTF, how could I have got it so wrong. I'm not a betting man, but I'm glad I'm on my side side and not theirs. By the way, why are they always so angry?
