DoD Identifies Army Casualties


The Department of Defense announced today the death of three soldiers who were supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom. They died Sept. 18 in Muqdadiyah, Iraq, of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near their unit during combat operations. They were assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team), Fort Lewis, Wash.

Killed were:

Spc. Joseph N. Landry III, 23, of Pensacola, Fla.

Spc. Nicholas P. Olson, 22, of Novato, Calif.

Spc. Donald E. Valentine III, 21, of Orange Park, Fla.

I almost did. I'm glad casualties are lower, too, but I think they should be published daily on the front page of the paper. The body counts and cost of the war, should be front page daily news, not something you have to go digging around obscure websites to find!

I HATE this war and I want our men and women to come home as much as anyone else. Im just glad we don't have headlines like we did in WWII. I wasn't born, Im 26, but I study alot, and I know that Americans had to read "12,000 dead in First Day at the Battle of Iwo Jima" Im not saying that 3500 or so is a small number, 2 would be 2 too many for this war, Im just saying "Thank goodness for small favors" thats all. I hope no one takes this the wrong way........

Sgt. Joseph M. Vanek, 22, of Elmhurst, Ill., died Nov. 12 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit using small arms fire. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C.

1st Squadron, 32nd Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.
