Why can Republicans not be proud of an American President being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize?
Has our American character dropped so low that we cannot even be polite to each other.

Health care ;does god exist ? ;if one does not like Obama=being a racist ? How interesting. How about instead;in six of the last nine years grain production has fallen short of consumption;or 70% of our planet's fresh water is used for irrigation & depleting rapidly;or our planet's top soil losses are happening at an alarming rate;or if our planet's population explosion doesn't come under control as in leveling off(hopefully reduce) none of what we do for the environment will have any value at all.If topics like these are not worth your time, please keep having guests like Ms. Garofalo on your program. My 10 yr. old german shep. just loves her!

Joel In Maine- if your only objection to the flu shots is that you feel you will pad the pockets of the pharmaceutical industry think of this as NOT lining the pockets of the funeral industry. The H1N1 flu virus is very devastating to children. Argue the philosophical perspective through other venues. I am sure you are a great parent but the deaths of so many children from this virus is a horrible consequence to the objection. Err on the side of caution.

My mistake on the type of flu shot. Sorry.

I live in Camden Maine and I have 4 children in the schools here. The yearly flu vaccines are being given this week and I am refusing to allow my children to be vaccinated. I personally feel it is causing more problems than good but with every other child in the district getting them I also feel it is a sure thing that my children will now be infected. I have read many arcticles on the pros and cons and feel it is just another way for the pharmasutical company's to make alot of money at our expense. Am I paranoid or does this make any sense. I also wonder of the cost to the state.

It is convenient for Democrats like Garofalo that Barrack Obama is black, because his skin color does not manifest his ideas, actions and beliefs, and, without his skin color, he - according to the Garofalo's of the world - is without ability to defend them.

Let's discuss the issues and facts surrounding them: not the cult(s) of personality representing them. It should not matter whether the idea comes from a black man or white woman - the merits of the idea as it exists within the framework of the US Constitution is all that matters.

Bill, don't you feel like you have a responsibility to check Janeane Garofalo's fact-challenged, inane banter? So long as "racism" persists as a "shield" to diffuse dissent against Democrat ideas, no useful dialog about the subject matter can be sustained. It is not intellectualism: it's cowardice.

Here are some facts things that Garofalo's liberal bias has blinded her to:

? The Republican party was formed in the 1850's to fight the incumbent Democrat party and to "restore the Union to its true mission of champion and promulgator of Liberty rather than propagandist of slavery."

? Democrats fought to expand slavery while Republicans fought to end it.

? Democrats took to violence on the floor of the US Senate with Democratic representatives Preston Brooks and Lawrence Keitt brutally beating Republican Charles Sumner with a cane after Sumner delivered an anti-slavery speech.

? Democrats passed those discriminatory Black Codes and Jim Crow laws.

? Democrats fought against anti-lynching laws.

? Democrats fought to keep blacks in slavery and away from the polls, and they started the Ku Klux Klan to terrorize them.

? Democrat Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia is well known for having been a "Keagle" in the Ku Klux Klan.

? Democrat Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia personally filibustered the Civil Rights Act of 1964 for 14 straight hours to keep it from passage.

? Democrats passed the Repeal Act of 1894 that overturned civil right laws enacted by Republicans.

? Democrats declared that they would rather vote for a?yellow dog? than vote for a Republican, because the Republican Party was known as the party for blacks.

? Democrat President Woodrow Wilson, reintroduced segregation throughout the federal government immediately upon taking office in1913.

? Democrat President Franklin D. Roosevelt's first appointment to the Supreme Court was a life member of the Ku Klux Klan, Sen. Hugo Black, Democrat of Alabama.

? Democrat President Franklin D. Roosevelt's choice for vice president in 1944 was Harry Truman, who had joined the Ku Klux Klan in Kansas City in 1922.

? Democrat President Franklin D. Roosevelt resisted Republican efforts to pass a federal law against lynching.

? Democrat President Franklin D. Roosevelt opposed integration of the armed forces.

? Democrat Senators Sam Ervin, Albert Gore, Sr.(father of Al Gore Jr.) and Robert Byrd were the chief opponents of the 1964 Civil RightsAct.

? Democrat public safety commissioner Eugene "Bull" Connor, in Birmingham, Ala., unleashed vicious dogs and turned fire hoses on black civil rights demonstrators.

? Democrats were whom Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the other protestors were fighting.

? Democrat Georgia Governor Lester Maddox "brandished an ax hammer to prevent blacks from patronizing his restaurant.

? Democrat Governor George Wallace stood in front of the Alabama schoolhouse in 1963, declaring there would be segregation forever.

? Democrat Arkansas Governor Faubus tried to prevent desegregation of Little Rock public schools.

? Democrat Senator John F. Kennedy voted against the 1957 Civil rights Act.

? Democrat President John F. Kennedy opposed the 1963 March on Washington by Dr. King.

? Democrat President John F. Kennedy, had Dr. King wiretapped and investigated by the FBI.

? Democrat President Bill Clinton's mentor was U.S. Senator J. William Fulbright, an Arkansas Democrat and a supporter of racial segregation.

? Democrat President Bill Clinton interned for J. William Fulbright in 1966-67.

? Democrat Senator J. William Fulbright signed the Southern Manifesto opposing the Supreme Court's 1954 Brown vs. Board of Education decision.

? Democrat Senator J. William Fulbright joined with the Dixiecrats in filibustering the Civil Rights Acts of 1957 and 1964.

? Democrat Senator J. William Fulbright voted against the 1965 Voting Rights Act.

? Republicans enacted civil rights laws in the 1950?s and 1960?s, over the objection of Democrats.

? Republicans founded the HCBU?s and started the NAACP to counter the racist practices of the Democrats.

? Republicans pushed through much of the ground breaking civil rights legislation in Congress.

? Republicans fought slavery and amended the Constitution to grant blacks freedom, citizenship and the right to vote.

? Republicans pushed through much of the groundbreaking civil rights legislation from the 1860s through the 1960s.

? Republican President Dwight Eisenhower sent troops into the South to desegregate the schools.

? Republican President Dwight Eisenhower appointed Chief Justice Earl Warren to the Supreme Court, which resulted in the 1954 Brown vs. Board of Education decision.

? Republican Senator Everett Dirksen from Illinois, not Democrat President Lyndon Johnson, was the one who pushed through the civilrights laws of the 1960?s.

? Republican Senator Everett Dirksen from Illinois wrote the language for the 1965 Voting Rights Act.

? Republican Senator Everett Dirksen from Illinois also crafted the language for the Civil Rights Act of 1968 which prohibited
discrimination in housing.

? The 1963 March on Washington by Dr. King was organized by A. Phillip Randolph who was a black Republican.

? Dr. Martin Luther King was a Republican.

? Ronald Reagan, said of the "modern" Democrat party in 1962: "I did not leave the Democratic party, the party left me."

Garofalo must be trying to shift the considerable sins of her party to the opposition, preying on the ignorance of her audience and their willingness to gobble-up the pablum of her hate-filled rants. Race bating and name calling: real intellectual stuff...

If Marijuana were to be legalized in the US, what kind of effect do you think that would have on the US/Mexican border? I live in El Paso, Texas and it?s terrible what?s going on in Juarez (all b/c of marijuana). I think the death toll from this cartel war is now up to 3,000 in 15 months.

When are you going to have a show on this?

Are there real savings from Medicare Advantage plans?
For instance: YMCA memberships.
YMCA already discounts memberships for seniors.
Do the Advantage plans offer a greater discount for seniors?
If so, how much of our tax dollars are spent on these memberships? how much of the alloted amount is kept by the Advantage plan as profit?

"What are the costs of not having universal health care. How do we show that it is against our economic interests not to have it?"

in increasing order of importance, as I see it:
problems with the current US system:
3. worse health:
some places in the world with universal health care have longer life expectancy and infant mortality.Should we walk around in public with people with untreated communicable diseases that didnt go to the doctor because they could not afford it or didnt want their insurance company to find out?

2. higher cost: sister pays 800/month and brother in law pays 1000/month. since it took me over an hour on the phone just to cancel the $150/month HDHP (hospital only) plan I had and never used, do I really believe they would pay promptly when an insured person gets sick?

1. stress/worry:
when you are sick do you want to worry that your insurance will not cover you or you will go bankrupt or lose your house and leave your family destitiute because of an accident/illness?

I would like to hear some arguments against universal health care.

Just a little reference website for those still believing there is a value to religiosity at all, especially the judeo-christian trdition. Theism is a barricade to understanding and coping with reality. If you have any doubts, just try to keep an open mind and investigate.

grywolf, thank you for the definitions of the different economic systems.

Being a worker(proletariat) in a capitalist system is not conductive to the accumulation of wealth. Getting ahead means being a capitalist(owner) if you can save enough to buy something that generates revenue.

As the population increases and productivity also increases, the competition between workers will increase. A college diploma is no longer a guarantee of a well paying job. Now that one person can farm 1000 acres of corn, how many workers do we really need?

I think if we are going to use capitalism, then we need some regulation. supply side economics does not seem to be working.
I do not understand the concept of a "consumer economy". how is this supposed to generate wealth?

Although I am not convinced that socialism is the best type of economy(who makes the decisions?) I do think that handing over public projects to the private sector is sometimes a bad idea(health care)

thanks for the discussion

from what I know, the canadian system works well

$94/month per couple
paid for if you cannot afford that

longer life expectancy
better infant mortality

It makes me wonder where the amounts spent above this go in the USA.

Health CARE is cheap
Health insurance and litigation are expensive.

I am getting tired of the people who come out against the proposal for a Public Option because they have a "great plan".

Apparently people do not understand that when they turn age 65 that their "great plan" will require that they enroll in Medicare and that their "great plan" will be their secondary carrier. Their claims will be rejected by Medicare as not being a covered Medicare service and then their "great plan" will also reject the claim. Good bye to that "great plan".

I had three health separate medical plans and now I have Medicare as my primary (I am 73 years old) which results in constant denials of service payments. My "great plans" are gone and I am constantly having to contact Medicare to get things straightened out usually with no good results. The co-pays I never had before are piling up.

grywolf, you said
"That being said... I am no longer an athiest. Because to be an athiest, you are believing in something that you cannot prove."

that sounds like an argument against theism instead of atheism.

Me being an atheist simply means I choose not to believe in a god that is in control of the universe. Do you have any proof that unicorns do not exist? would this be an argument for your believing in them? I do not think so.

People kill each other daily because they believe in a different interpretation of god.

You cannot say "arent we lucky to live on a planet that can support life" because if it couldnt support life, you wouldnt be here. the universe is big. out of all that there is at least one place that evolved conscious life.(here)

EVOLUTION from natural selection is not random.
I suggest you read Dawkins. To me the concepts are much more interesting, enlightening and reasonable than the bible stories. To me it makes life more valuable, not less.

have a good day.
