I love the show and support our troops 100%. First episode bothered me. Call me sensitive, but do some troops really make fun of the kids here at home who put their heart and soul into the letters and care packages? As a mom of 3, I organized my share of collections for the troops. We really do care about the military and I hope it isn't true. I realize you have to portray all soldiers, but I think that episode really made them all look bad. Tell me they really don't appreciate the letters these kids write, or the candy, baby wipes, etc. that my kids went door to door collecting. Most people probably overlooked that scene, but I will always wonder if it is true. I know you guys have more important things on your mind, but if someone has 2 minutes for a quick answer, I'd appreciate it.

Old school values and honor? You can find those qualities anywhere you look in life. If you look hard enough and have a strong inner moral compass. While you can find these qualities in the military you might not always find them there. In fact you might come across some of the biggest low lifes, thieves, crooks, child abusers, wife beaters, cowards, drunks, and creeps you have ever seen. The military being a reflection of the world we live in.

I think the military represents old > school values we're slowly losing in this country. There are only two type of people. Those who do. And those who do not. You are sitting home or somewhere else safe. Or you are out rucking. My thoughts on this have not changed in 40 years + now since I was getting shot at. If you support the war just stfu and enlist. Everything else is plain old yacking bullshit.(this is not a slam on you---its a general observation) Of course if you really are aginst the war then get off your ass, put down the mouse, and get out there and stop it. But most are yackers. They will yack about it. And then they will yack about it. Then they will yack about it some more. The only wars worth fighting are those you are willing to fight yourself. All else is bullshit and flag waving and others not named you doing the fighting and dying. -- Edited by BTDTGuy at 08/19/2008 9:14 AM PDT

Yeah, those are some awesome, old school values right there that the military likes to keep around. You got to understand that not every unit with embedded reporter's actually wrote a book, which inturn became to basis for this series. I have lost too many friends in Iraq and there is nothing in that country worth one american soldier or marine dying! However, I think the GK series shows too many american who never put on a military uniform the stupidity that is combat. Too many people see war as this glorious event that is sterile and clean. However, We who were there know otherwise! Are there other unit's who would have made better stories? Sure.. However, those units didn't have Evan Wright as an embedded reporter who wrote the book GK! I think The story of Task Force Tarawa at Nasariyah would have made a better theatrical movie but i think people have seen that type of film. This series exposes a side of the military that the average american doesn't know exsists. -- War is brutal and only those who have been can know the truth!!

Nope, don't think anyone from HBO is monitoring these forums. I asked to create a commentary to address the issues that this thread brings up: What people see (the audience) and what is going on with the individuals you see depicted. It is hard to put into context what you see unless you realize the living situation the men are going through, that they have been traveling, sleep-deprived, shot at, etc. It is great to see a show that gives a realistic depiction of what a Marine Recon unit is like and what they are going through, but think that so many people will not understand what they see, or take the wrong impression from it. (After completing Basic Training, I rented "Full Metal Jacket" and played it at my first training site. We were all awe-struck, actually. And some of us wished our basic training had had as much training as the Marines in that film were experiencing. A Drill Sergeant commented on "The good old days," likely referring to when Drill's could lay hands on recruits.) -- Sky http://www.youtube.com/user/skyanimal

Hopefully someone from HBO is monitoring these forums, this show is complete garbage. Every military cliche you can think of has been put into the movie from the whole "charms" superstition to the fact that everyone has some sort of nick name. This show, to all non military personnel, sometimes gives a horrible impression of the troops overseas. From the ridiculous characters like the "Godfather" who always talks about himself in the third person to the tiresome attempt of witty dialogue between the senior enlisted and their subordinates, this show is almost equivalent to the FX series "Over There", which was in itself a complete abortion. If HBO wanted a real story they should have followed a unit that did more with their time in Iraq. From intense and pivotal battles to loss of friends. There is no emotional connection with any one of the characters in this show. I lost 8 friends so far in this war, and HBO's crapy attempt at this "Documentary" is insulting. Side note: any truth that does lie within this insult of a war documentary/show does not say much for the Marine capabilities or plannning. HBO if you want a real story contact 3rd ID, 3rd CAV, The Rangers, 82nd, or the Marines from India Co in Falluja, those are stories worth sharing.

The way some Americans act towards our soldiers is shameful. You guys are the real heroes! You deserve the millions of dollars sports stars make. I wish all Americans could appreciate the sacrifice you make and would stop listening to the media like they actually know what the heck they're talking about.

SPADES & HEARTS?? Good Lord, you kids have no imagination whatsoever. No wonder you get bored so easily. HORSE RACING - That's the ticket. On board a Nuclear Submarine no less. If we could do it while underway, grunts can sure do it in the sandbox. For those that don't know how to do it but wanna learn from an old timer - let me know and I'll upload the instructions and post the link here. I was watching GK last week and the more BS I heard fly the more memories it brought back. Hate to say the GK dialogue is pretty tame compared to what we used rag on each other about, but it's close enough. I expect different times and "Political Correctness" have made them tone it down some. Still though, good stuff, especially the Command screwups. Now real people have some idea of what NCO's have to deal with as far as "Officer Material". Their Command MSgt. reminds me of an idiot COB we had on my first deployment. He lasted 6 months because he was more in tune with regs and his own image than he was the welfare of the unit.

My husband was one of the Corpsman for a Marine Battalion out of Baton Rouge, he was there about a week after the inital bombing, I constantly ask him questions during the show and when that part came up I was quick to ask if that is what happened. I know that a Marine has to be hard and to show some weakness is not a good thing, but he told me that secretly they enjoyed the letters and did write back. He said that it helped moral especially with those individuals who did not receive letters from home. My husband is getting ready to go back and once again I will start up the care packages and letters, I don't care what is said when the letters and packages are received I know that I am doing my civic duty to help these brave men and women feel that someone back here gives a damn about them. I wish all would do their part in helping out. People need to remember that they fight so that we don't have to.

Ain't that the truth Spades/Hearts gets boring after the first 15 or so hands, I remember geting on letter that just Hi it was right around christmas. It was from a Little boy from a school I wrote the boy back and just said hi back then next mail drop I got about 3 letters from the same boy and I still get mail from him he has become a pen pal. But it does so much for our Moral we do make fun of some of the letters and joke about them but we know we are just trying to cover up our real feelings when we get these letters they do mean a lot to us. And I would Like to thank anyone here that gives of their time to send us the letters and packages they do mean a lot and help our Moral ALOT so Thank You All -- CPL GOOD 1/8 A Co.

Send the cards, When I got them we made fun of some of them, but when you thought about it later it brought a smile to your face. Best letter I ever got was pictures of a bunch of magazine cut outs of hot girls, and US and People magazine clippings. It gave us something to talk about and do. It does get boring playing Spades and Hearts 24/7.

ycats61, I was in the Corps from '02-'06 and served in the infantry. We joke around a lot like that because we have a dark sense of humor. It's so wrong and sick that it's funny. Rest assured though that we really do appreciate the care packages as a lot of people don't have a chance to go to a PX and buy stuff they need or want. I personally wrote back to everyone that sent me a care package and still talk to them to this day. In a time where you watch the news and all it seems is bad news and low approval ratings, it warms our hearts to know that there are still Americans that take the time out of their busy days to send care to people they don't even know. Thank you, -Cpl Koehler
