Tom Hanks would probably prefer rap to classical and the rather poorly done background music demonstrates it. On the other hand, John Adams and Americans of that time preferred classical music, hymns and folk music to the "bongo drums" preferred on other continents.

I'm glad someone else loves the theme because I was wondering the same thing--is it available on CD. Each week when John Adams came on I wanted to turn the TV up loud when the theme music came on. The other music within the mini-series is also very nice, but you never know which tracks will be released. Keep in mind that movie soundtracks don't last long on the market so buy now or pay more later on eBay as I did ($60 for Fried Green Tomatoes soundtrack).

I agree about the similarities to LOTM, but I bought the CD last night and I still love the score, particularly the opening theme. I caught a portion of a Mozart theme in one selection as well. I did look at the liner notes, and although I thought I heard uileann pipes in several places in the score, I did not see anyone credited with playing them. Anyone know anything about this? Also, I was hoping the producers had used the great Scottish fiddler, Alasdair Fraser, as he I believe he was featured in some of the LOTM score (pehaps in The Gael?) - but I see they did not, which was a bit disappointing.

I still think this music is almost identical to Last of the Mohicans, regardless of "The Gael" being the original music in that movie. It has ruined the music in this fine John Adams series for me because I feel it is falsely being presented as original.

Did anyone notice some similarities in the opening and closing theme to The Last of the Mohicans (1992) At least the original music for the film by: Randy Edelman Trevor Jones ? Not the same just some of the same inspirations.... I think the score for Last of the Mohicans is somewhat under rated.

If its just the theme song you want, do a torrent search for "John Adams theme song".

some music student needs to step in here. I'm not one, but I do know that the problem here is not the specific piece of music, but the sound itself. This is the music the people of the Revolution heard in their lives (minus the orchestral instruments). It is mostly Irish or Scots based, with simple drums, pipes, and fiddles. The average person of that time had very little choice of instruments, especially those that came across the ocean. They didn't have room for a large instrument (and in the case of the Scots, the bagpipes had been outlawed after the Jacobean revolution). Movies or programs about this time period will all have a certain sound in the music, if done true to the era. That is why it sounds so like LOTM and others. But, the central question has NOT been answered: WHERE CAN I GET THIS MUSIC? Is it to be in wide release (ie: Walmart), or only from HBO?

It's a great tune, it's Celtic, but it's not the Gael by Dougie Maclean that was the theme song for Last of the Mohegans. What is very ironic is that Adams was not a keen fan of Celts of any stipe. He once referred to Hamilton as "The B*st*rd Son of a Sots Peddler" and was very much against recognizing either John Paul Jones (a Scot) nor John Barry (an Irishman) as fathers of the American Navy as it was an affront to the native New England sea faring tradition. This is a very good series, but Adams had his share of prejudices too and HBO is making him (great man that he was) a bit too saintly.

I'm glad to see that others recognize that the theme song for John Adams (which I LOVED) is the same as the theme for The Last of the Mohicans (which I happened to see again yesterday). I remember loving that music back when that first came out and was stunned to see it was the same. I don't see this Rob Lane guy who is listed for the John Adams music on the credits for Last of the Mohicans. Surely this can't be a ripoff? That couldn't be NOT known by the producers, could it? Jan

The composer took an Irish jig/Celtic music and then wrote a piece of music around it/with it/under it/before it. He did a marvelous job! The credits at the end give his name and another. But one has to be a really fast reader to catch it as HBO really rolls the end credits. The soundtrack CD will be released April 22, according to a previous post that also gives the URL.
