Yesterday (April 30th) was the anniversary of George Washington?s inauguration as President of the United States in 1789. This really cool blog can tell you more about how accurate the scene was as depicted in the John Adams mini-series. http://boston1775.blogspot.com/2008/04/washingtons-inauguration-rewritten.html "One often-repeated detail of that event was that Washington added the words ?So help me God? to the oath of office prescribed by the Constitution. The recent John Adams miniseries on H.B.O. depicted the moment that way."

Of course, there's nothing wrong with those who have an opinion on the impact of modern right wing fascist Christians on American Government, but to attempt to rewrite history is the act of dishonesty, ignorance and a deplorable lack of education. Of course it's about what one might expect from the fans of a such an appallingly poor biographical production of John Adams. ******************************** Tommy Jefferson was a fruitcake whose writings include support for the bloody Frency Revolution, denials of his own personal bankruptcy, and the irresponsible abuse of his slaves and his own family. To the point... this thread about JOHN ADAMS recommended opening the Continental Congress in prayer and selected Rev. Jacob Duche a local preacher. Tommy Jefferson sat still for it. The tratition has continued for 230 years. Present on the very first day also were George Washington, Patrick Henry, Saumuel Adams and John Jay. The Rev. Jacob Duche read the ENTIRE text of Psalm 35 from the Bible which was the Episcopal Church's assigned Scripture for the day. Uneducated bigots, unwashed fools and drug-induced screw-ups might imagine History to be different but of course they'd believe anything an idiot, a bigot and an America Hater like Tom Hanks produced. Have a Nice Day!

> It's just that it's difficult to convince some that > the country wasn't "founded on Christianity" That's an excellent point. I was commenting on the historical accuracy aspect. Still if Washington said it, we don't have any idea which God he was referring to . Oops I said it. I predict a thread hijack. -- Edited by jmarsh4036 at 05/02/2008 4:40 PM PDT -- Edited by jmarsh4036 at 05/02/2008 4:40 PM PDT

It's just that it's difficult to convince some that the country wasn't "founded on Christianity" and this bit, although often said merely to add emphasis rather than a religious context, has at times been cited in that argument. Which I'm not gonna touch with a barge-pole. John Adams screencaps Stephen Dillane screencaps

Oh don't be too hard on them Katie. I think it's one of those innocent embellishments. Besides apparently no one actually heard him since he was so soft spoken. I love that blog though. Recently he wrote about a letter from one of John Adams relatives who frequently had Sunday dinner with John and Abigail. His description of John was not as curmudgeonly as he's been depicted. The relative, who was a child, one of the Quincy's as I recall was more intimidated by Abigail.

That's interesting. It seems pretty clear that it wasn't said, so I wonder why HBO decided to perpetuate the ad-lib. Little inaccuracies I can live with, but the swearing in of our first president is too important to mess with, imo. John Adams screencaps
