Lance Armstrong: Showergate

Dear Mr. Gumbel and HBO
Do you sincerely think that Lance Armstrong's shower that he took while a stranger's credentials were checked out is going to help him pass a drug test?
You're right, he probably did a quick hair transplant, performed dialysis, and activated his internal urine collection system.....
To make assumptions like you did at the end of your April 14, 2009 episode
was very unprofessional journalism.
An apology is warranted to this athlete and to the millions of fans who not only think he is an exceptional athlete but find inspiration in him when they are fighting cancer.
Regards,
Cancer Survivor

I think that those who preceded me did a wonderful job expressing how I also feel about Mr. Gumbel's Lance Armstrong piece. However, the news of Manny Ramirez only made me feel even more disturbed by this editorial. While it is quite fashionable in the cycling and sports community to be anti-Lance, it makes me feel as though Mr. Gumbel heard of this incident the night before, created his editorial based on the hearsay that originally prevailed, and perpetuated a popular view to a largely non-cycling-fan audience. "Journalism" like this only hurts a sport that has been years ahead of the big 3 in testing and accountability for doping infractions. Somehow, that didn't make the editorial.

First, I am FAR from a Lance Armstrong supporter and fully believe that in 1999 he probably got away with taking some sort of banned substance... But so then did the entire peloton. That was just the nature of cycling back then. I don't condone it at all, it was just the unfortunate consequences of too much money in the sport. However, no other Athlete since then has been dragged into the mud by the French more so. He does bring a lot of it on himself, but that same attitude is the same that launched his successful career that allowed him to only train for the tour.

Second, just because you do not view cycling as a real sport, does not give you the right to mislead the general public who does not know the real truth. No other sport test as much as cycling, not even close. All American sports would have folded long ago had it been dragged through the mud as much as cycling. Lance Armstrong has been tested in 25 out of competition test this year alone. That comes out to a little over two a week! Again he has brought this on himself, but no other athlete comes even close to this.

It is foolish to not say the French are on a witch hunt. In a sport that they feel is their own, they have not had a winning rider since Richard Virenque, who himself was kicked out of the sport for banned substances. My feelings are that their media is killing the sport they so dearly love, because, well quite frankly the suck at it... Let me rephrase, the are very good at it, they just lack a tour winner. Their track cyclist are only rivaled by the Brits.

In closing, Mr. Gumball, I have lost most of my respect for you years ago and if it were not for Frank, Bernie and Mary, I would have stopped watching at that time. You are an ego manic who's bias has taken you far, far away from being a true journalist.

Maybe you should leash your furry on the true cheats. Tennis, Soccer, Football and Baseball... All which have the weakest drug policy because they are not being pressured for change. Their policies are a joke and you all know it! They test for very little and give such a large window, you would have to be a true dumba#$ to fail. Why, because baseball with out amphetimenes would be a real sleeper and 300lb linebackers are now what people want to see. Remember out of the 250 or so names on the suspected "Operation Puerto" case in Spain, only a small handful are cyclist with the majority magically being swepted under the table. Why? Because they were all superstars of soccer and tennis!

Why is no one asking why college kids are 300+ lbs? Hell even high school kids for that matter. I had the opportunity to take steroids in school for football and luckily I decided against it. But it was like candy in the locker room and YOU All know it.

I'd have to agree with the topic originator. Taking a shower after a 3-hour ride WILL NOT keep testers from finding something illegal in his hair samples or blood. Has Gumbel been slighted by Armstrong? Otherwise, I don't get the insinuation of impropriety. Armstrong having 24 out of competition tests while the next closest cyclist is at less than 10 reeks of a witch hunt. Once again, the classless Gumbel lets his PERSONAL vendetta get in the way of his journalism..............not that he has ever been a REAL journalist. The best parts of Real Sports are when Gumbel is not on it just as it has been at all of the stops of his overrated career.
