After your recent story on racehorses and what becomes of them when they do not perform, I will never again watch or involve myself in watching these races. At least until legislation or a governing party protects these animals by law from such a horrid, indefinite conclusion. What is this world coming to? Who do we think we are? How can a racehorse owner allow this to happen? I'll tell ya how ........ MONEY! They could care-a-less about the animal unless it's making them millions. What a freakin' shame! Shame on the sport for allowing this. Shame on anyone whom condone's it! Shame on me for never seeing this sport for what it really is!

I saw this episode tonight and found it so truly disturbing. I know that there is cruelty in a lot of slaughterhouses for different animals all over the world but this seems particularly cruel. Why if these animals were regarded as royalty and a chance for fame and fortune to their breeders, owners, riders and trainers are they sent off with a turn of a cheek so easily over money? There really should be laws against this in the sport . It's too bad that HBO didn't air a commercial for the documentary during the Kentucky Derby. I bet even the fans would be outraged! I was very pleased to read that HBO and real sports received an Emmy in Outstanding Sports Journalism for this piece. Kudos to you all for shedding light on stuff like this to Sports fans!!

I was up listening one night to George Knapp on Coast to Coast. He was broadcasting from Vegas...and told a story about the BLM and how they are transporting wild horses off to slaughter because they need to thin the herd (these are mustangs.) So the horses are either going to starve or be transported. Sheryl Crow is working with a rescue group and has adopted some. Whatever her politics, this is a good thing. The mainstream media isn't talking about it because it's not sexy, I guess.

I had know idea they let morons in here. I assumed they had a filter for that. Hey, heartless Al ....... aren't you a sheep farmer from Montana with a few pair of velcro gloves. I guess they should continue to slaughter these animals as Al's infectious wisdom has steered me unto a more clear & visual path. NOT ! AL, seriously, I have a vision of you in my mind and I can honestly say, "Your poor poor wife" ! Back to the woods, my friend. I hear, there, you will find a heart.

Back in the old days, even stealing a horse was a hanging offense. The emotional roots go deep-hence the thread. Before you sling insults, Al, learn to spell. Your post was incomprehensible. -- Edited by alswhore at 06/01/2009 7:25 AM PDT

what do bear traps and snares have anything to do with horses? thats has nothing to do with horses, i mean, whatswrong with eating a healthy 3 yeard old horse? nothing, they kill the horses is the same way we kill any other animal is the country, weather or not you want to believe but thats the truth, your just getting high and mighty on everyone because its a horse and more deserving animal then pigs and cows and chickens, really, i dont think a horse is more deserving of life than chicken or cows! hypocrites , thats what you all are! -- Edited by AlHampton at 05/31/2009 8:00 PM PDT

The point is is that these are healthy 3 year olds who are sold for meat simply for greed because they do not place and are not moneymakers. There is an abundance of meat available besides horse. The herding pens are an abomination and weak horses are simply left to die in the muck. I certainly do not have a problem eating meat but there are humane (funny word) to go about it. An old timer here in town has a collection of snares and bear traps. They are huge and horrifying.

ha lol, put pressure on the EU and Japan to stop buying them? they have been eating Horse forever, i my self tried a horse sausage when i was there, i can not see a moral difference in eating a cow then eating a horse, seriously, our whole meat industry is like this , if you eat chicken, then your even more responsible for the in humane treatment of poultry, so instead of saying lets save these beautiful creaturs, think for a second and ask your self why a horses life is more valuable than a cow or chickens!

ok , i dont see whats wrong with raising animals and then eating them! maybe if we did not ban this, then instead of sending the horses to mexico we can try to kill them here and enjoy the meat ! ! ! or as americans are we to good for horse meat? it seems to me that we should look more into our meat industry then to say there is widespread horse massacres going on, i say you shoot them in the head, kill em instantly an get the meat from it, i dont want any, but instead of banning things, lets control them and make this a more safe and humane proccess! -- Edited by AlHampton at 05/31/2009 11:02 AM PDT

there is a great little charity called Hope From Horses, it teaches disabled children to ride. My friend did volunteer work with them and had a blast. why not give these horses a second career?

HBO should do a follow-up on the follow-up. It still goes on, only behind the scenes. The lower class tracks may have no slaughter rules, but instead, horses are taken directly to the farms of the meat man or to the auction lots and loaded right on the trucks without even going through the auctions. When is this going to end and give these athletes a second chance at life when they can't run any longer?

Lucybell, your post broke my heart. I hope you saw my post and are heartened to know that things are being done to remedy this terrible situation. Sad to say, I don't expect much from the UN as they can't even get UNAMID the equipment they need to keep humans from being slaughtered in the Sudan.

after I got done crying, I did some homework. More attention is being paid to to Wilson Langley and Dick Rudibaugh, the "meat men." The Sugarcreek Stables was inspected and the herding pens were a decrepit, filthy mess. Thank God for the gal who worked there who blew the whistle-Becky (?) and is not afraid to talk. Animal rescue groups are swinging into action and pressure is being applied to the auction houses. I found an online petition, just Google "No Day Off." or "Running For their Lives." -- Edited by alswhore at 05/29/2009 9:02 AM PDT

I just saw this and i had to turn it off -it was so distrurbing. i'm crying as i write this because i cant stop. i also just sent an email to HBO asking them to provide information on their website on how we can help. can we stop the sale of horses to these buyers who ship them to mexico and canada? do we try and put pressure on these two countries to stop the slaughter in such inhumane ways -at least get them to change the way they kill them so they are more humane. i dont know. do we put pressure on the EU and Japan to not buy them? somebody please let me know. i feel so helpless.

I just watched this doc..I am trying to restrain myself but I can see what drives people to blow shit up. MY hands are shaking. To kill a horse because it doesn't win...no big purse. Not because they are ill, because they can't line the pockets of the pigs who own them. I hope Bill Maher sees this and screams his head off the next show. -- Edited by alswhore at 05/27/2009 8:40 AM PDT
