Servilia's incessant cries for justice drive Atia to distraction, and result in an unfortunate public denouement. Meanwhile, Octavian, Mark Antony and Lepidus agree to divvy up Rome's territories, sharing a common treasury.

I couldn't say...speculation is pointless, but do I personally believe the historical people of Rome were more Barbaric than the television show the Sopranos. Let's just agree modern people today haven't really created any new ways to betray, lie, cheat, steal, and murder since the ancient Roman. I quess the only change today is that television brings it to your face, if you choose to watch.

Oh come on, the Romans were way more simple than the Sopranos...the Romans didn't glorify killing and dignity as if they were brothers like the in Sopranos. The Romans truly believed that their soul gained dignity in a killing act like sucide. Which the Sopranos would say "Are you FRICKIN CRAZY!!!!"

Hello Cargilb1. You are correct. History does not state that Atia was involved with Mark Anthony. However, history does say that Atia had a lover and died a year after Ocatavian gained full control of Rome. That is all that is written of her. The show is trying to reflect the fact that women did not have much power, however, Atia was in a position to some power because she was of royal family. If she had been a man, she would have ruled Rome. The show is displaying the fact that women had to be cunning in order to have their will be done.

Her TV character is most certainly > more interesting, but borders on damaging the real > Atia's character for those not familiar with history. I have no idea why, but for drama. And Atia never had a fued with Servilla either. Servilla also did not commit suicide. she died of old age. -- I came I saw and I conquered

I thought that was a mirror, and it was simply her sinister face passing by. An artistic moment.

Stupid question time: At the end of "Death Mask" as Gaia is leaving the stall with the herbs, faces appear in the wall. Am I correct in assuming that those are the faces of Servillia and her slave or am I compleatly missing the point?

To gbluu.I admire your forebearance. I just read oberon69's reply to your post. It was rude, condescending, and the textbook definition of arrogant. We're not all scholares here - we're fans. Your question was perfectly legitimate. Don't be discouraged from posting more just because some people take themselves too seriously. They think, for some unfathomable reason that they're superior. This merely illuminates how "absurd" they themselves are. And I say to oberon - I hope that bug up your ass dies in the very near future. -- Edited by MammariaPendulosa at 03/10/2007 12:55 PM

just to add to what mjmd said about cuss words, by using words which we may find offensive the producers are affording the characters interactions the same level of impact on us, as more historically accurate cuss words would have had to the people of rome. it's the same as with deadwood where the producers felt it would be a little trite to have characters use hell and damn as the top end expletives but by using words which we wouldn’t use in front our parents we can better relate to the depth of the characters sentiment and to be fair I’ve got more of a problem with the writers giving someone three more years of life than with them using the wrong words

> Did anyone else notice when Octavian, Mark Antony > and > Lepidus were dividing control of Rome's > territories.Octavian said Mark antony would have > egypt and Lepidus would have Africa...they seperated > egypt from africa. Why would the writers separate a > country from its continent if one controls africa and > egypt is in africa then you control egypt as > well, right?? i thought it was absurd. Thats obvious; what's really absurd is the oversight in your assumptions. The known world was alot smaller two-thousand years ago. Yes, Egypt is a country within Africa now, but back then Africa was the designator for the known lands to the west and south of Egypt. It's not like they called what we know as Europe "Europe" back then. What you are saying is comparable to proclaiming it is absurd that one would make a distinction between the Roman Empire and Europe two-thousand years ago; back then the lands known as Europe were inside the Roman Empire, not the other way around like it would be today. The etymology of the word Africa actually originates from around the time of the Early Roman Empire. "Afer" being the descriptor used to denote peoples living in and around Carthage, with the Latin suffix "-ca" which means "Country or Land." Effectually, if HBO's Rome would have been written in Latin, Octavian would have meant "The lands surrounding Carthage" when he said Africa.
