Episode 21: Deus Impeditio Esuritori Nullus

Rome is facing a dire shortage of grain, forcing Octavian to barter with Mark Antony to get new shipments sent from Egypt. But instead of agreeing to Octavian's price--money and territory--Mark Antony flatly turns him down, pointing towards an inevitable conflict between the two former allies and, perhaps, Vorenus and Pullo. As a last resort, Octavian sends Atia and Octavia to Alexandria, knowing their reception will most likely be a chilly one.

Actually, Scribonia was Octavian's second wife.

Octavian's dad had died when he was young and his mother had remarried a man named Octavius and was so married until Atia's death in 42BC. Octavius (also known as Phillipus) then remarried, one of Atia's sisters!

Loved the ending too... couldn't have the fictional Atia go into a depression over all of this... interesting to see Livia's early progression into a shrewd consort for Octavian. :)

The average viewer does not care about details like that.

It was not noted that Livia Drusilla was a Claudian and higher in the aristocracy than Octavian. But that's kind of moot when one becomes the first Emperor it really does not matter if you are only half Julio.

I like that too, I was afraid things would come to blows, but Pullio and Vorenus just said 'the hell with that', after what they had been through, makes sense.

A very enjoyable, hugely entertaining, if wildly inaccurate, series. I mean, what happened to Scribonia and Julia, Octavian's FIRST wife and their (and his) only child? The series just jumped straight to Livia, therefore leaving out the great-grandmother and grandmother of Caligula, and the great-great grandmother and great-grandmother of Nero. This is my biggest complaint. How could they just ignore the direct descendants of two, albeit awful, emperors?

I'm actually a great fan of the historical Augustus - a fascinating, ambiguous, twisty figure. The series Octavian, however, is a very plausible reading of the historical man. However, it did skip over that Octavian's father's side of his family were, for such an ambitious lad, a totally useless political force. It was right to emphasise the Atia/Caesar connection which, of course, made him - the Octavian/Thurinus names had no political weight whatsoever (one of his ancestors was rumoured to have been a banker - an insult to a Roman who wants to be seen as an aristocrat). A few jokes about Octavian's background would have been rather fun, particularly from Antony.

Still, a nice, ambiguous ending, with the glorious Atia dissing Livia. And it was good that the writers decided not to be obvious and end up with Pulio and Vorenus being forced to fight each other because of divided loyalty. Friendship won out - as it should.

Pullo was my favorite character next Antony. Both were so un-apologetically aggressive, yet very human.

Best Marcus Antonius (Mark Antony) quote was his last
"Tell them I died well, Tell them I died Roman"
Great Show--going to miss it.

I too will really miss this show and wish it could have lasted longer. As the series finale, I thought it was a little lacking, but Atia rocked at the end. Between this and soon The Sopranos ending, I'm so depressed.

The actors were absoultely outstanding. Although I was never crazy about the casting for Cleopatra. Atia was awesomeNot to mention that I've gone from being in love with Vorenus, then Caesar, then Pullo, and finally Mark Antony. Love them all!

The scenes of Antony and Cleopatra wrestling were hilarious. I really expected to hear some "Three Stooges" type whoops and nyuks.

"No God can stop a Hungry Man" translation, I think it applies both to the grain shortage being a spark for war , as well as Octavian's thirst forpower

Does anyone know the translation of the title?

I can't believe the series finale is upon us, this the second series I really enjoy to be removed. No more, I don't think I'll be watching any more HBO series.

Cox cable has it right, so I don't think HBO is at fault.

I have Time Warner cable in the Kansas City area and there are only 3 episodes of "Rome" available - 15, 16, and 19. Also "The Sopranos" has some missing episodes and "Sex and the City" is not there at all.

I emailed both HBO and Time Warner. Haven't received an answer from HBO but Time Warner sent me a reply that doesn't make a lot of sense:

"we have had some difficulties with our propagation server that required us to have many titles repitched that were corrupted during acquisition."

I'm still waiting for OnDemand to be corrected. X-(

Ann,

Do you have Comcast? Because I've had the same problem in the past and they said it was HBO's fault. I haven't checked lately to be honest. However, last Sunday's episode will be shown on the main HBO channel at 9:00 tonight (preceded by the prior two episodes). Thanks for tracking down the contact info.
