As Pompey "maneuvers" outside the city, Caesar seeks to consolidate his hold on Rome. Atia throws a party to welcome Caesar home, while Vorenus throws one of his own to usher in his new life as a citizen businessman. Pullo's run of luck continues when he delivers Quintus Pompey to Caesar, who in turn returns Quintus to his father's camp--with an offer of truce he knows Pompey will never accept.

Aureate, To me, that is a great thing about Rome. It is so real in detail that new questions keep popping up! Love it!

Speaking of treasure, I wonder how Roman citizens who had any kept their wealth safe? There were no banks and little protection from crime. Hiding it in one's home does not seem very safe. Any ideas? Message was edited by efficacy at Jan 2, 2006 8:45 AM

Kaliope, I, too, wondered if Servilia enjoyed or liked her gift. As for myself, I would have taken the flowers and vines off of him. Taken the chains off, put the turtle down and wrapped him in a warm wooly blanket, whereupon I would very tenderly escort him to my boudoir, and send for food. Enough for two with pastries and sweet wine. I would take very good care of him and treat him like a human being instead of a genital. With good treatment, hopefully, he would lose that ground into the ground look that he had which broke my heart. Okay, I'm the lady that rescues stray cats.

My favorite character is Castor. Despite Atia whipping him for no reason other than she's frustrated which she probably does a lot anyway, he manages to maintain his dignity. As he told Posca "Try bondage to a bloody-minded woman." This could have been the party from hell but everyone is civilized.

Ave, I stand Corrected. Although the Mare Adriaticus is quite rough in season. Ave Atque Vale MLDrusus The portrayel was of Antonys crossing of the Ionian sea, not the Adriatic. The Ionian sea opens up to the the Med and is far rougher then its protected cousin the Adriatic. Venice is at the far north point of the Adriatic, is protected from North winds, and has far more stable seas then in the Ianian........S&H 1st spear Message was edited by MarcusLiviusDrusus at Oct 15, 2005 11:48 AM
