"Are We Rome? Tu Betchas!"

It's not often you get to read something funny in the New York Times anymore... let alone something in Latin. So for any interested, here is a little 'tongue in cheek' editorial from Maureen Dowdus:

"Are We Rome? Tu Betchus!"

Somehow.. this just seems fitting here... now...

" The budget should be balanced, the treasury should be refilled, public debt should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands should be curtailed lest Rome become bankrupt. People must again learn to work, instead of living on public assistance." -- Cicero , 55 B.C.

HMMMM... why does that statement seem so..... now???

Hi Alki! Methinks Josephus has already learned the phrase 'cave famum'... since it turns out he doesn't even have a plumber's license, makes $40K a yr qualifying him for a tax cut under Obama's plan but not McCain's, hasn't paid taxes on that $40K anyway and has not alerted the IRS to the fact, and the story about buying his boss's business also turned out to be a 'BIG LIE' as it is nowhere near the quarter of a million operation he claimed Obama meant to hurt.

But then again, McCain is referring to that by a new expression: "a SCREW UP". Loved that Paul and the band played "Can't Explain" when he came out...

Yes Elare, thanks for posting. I read it with a great deal of amusement. Georgio Busio Secondo colossale goofballo--LOL!!

Maybe Maureen's next offering will enlighten us about the secret identity of Josephus Canalis.

Thanks for responding, Valsmom! I did a double take before hitting 'post', as I know how volatile anything political can be. But, I did so because I did find it heartening that people are studying Latin again, and even using it for humor.

You are fortunate; I never studied Latin, (all my years of Latin mass as a Roman Catholic withstanding) but I suppose all the researching I've been doing attempting to write my novel, plus being familiar with the Italian language helped. I understood virtually everything and translated it to the degree it was meant, perhaps as I am an avid reader of news and it is unavoidable to ignore things political at such juncture in our country's history. Plus, some things just SOUND funnier with a 'us' or 'um' at the end...

For example, let's take the name of Jay Leno. Did you know, that a leno, in Latin, was a pimp? Likewise, a Lena, was a madame. (And I always thought it a beautiful female name...) In Pompeii, the most notorious brothel known today that all the tourists visit, was owned by a man named 'Africanus'. Simple-speak for, the dude was from Africa. Since I've heard McCainus (reminding me that his name is similar to dogs, cane or canum plural) has actually agreed to go back on Letterman Thursday night after Davidus has excoriated him the last few weeks.... I wouldn't dare play games with HIS name...B-)

Should be interesting late night watching... Never wise to lie to a man who has a sharp wit, and nightly audience to laud or ridicule you, especially when you chose that man's show to announce your campaign on. Oh dear... I better go as my political preference is showing and that seems so divisive these days, even if done with humor and subtlety...

Elare,

Thanks for that. Despite having Latin in high school for three years and following along in Latin at Mass for many years, I couldn't translate most of this.

However the gist came through. The most depressing part was the speculation that Sarah ("Ferox Puella") Palin might run in 2012. :_| X-(
