Ray Stevenson in The Book of Eli

With Denzel Washington and Gary Oldman! Woo hoo! GO, RAY, GO!!! :-x

Studio interest in post-apocalyptic flicks has exploded in recent years, with big-budget projects like I Am Legend, Wall-E, Terminator Salvation, and Viggo Mortensen's upcoming The Road showcasing various harrowing visions of humanity's future.

One post-apocalyptic project that has managed to fly somewhat under the radar is The Book of Eli, the first movie helmed by sibling directors Albert and Allen Hughes since 2001's From Hell. The film stars Denzel Washington as the ?lone hero in a not-too-distant apocalyptic future who must fight across America to bring society the knowledge that could be the key to its redemption,? with said knowledge presumably contained in the titular book.

Little is known about The Book of Eli beyond the above-mentioned Variety synopsis, so today we asked Punisher: War Zone star Ray Stevenson, who recently joined the film's cast, to shed some light on its futuristic setting:

"The world in which it is set is completely uncompromising," Stevenson told us. "The most precious commodity is actually water, because virtually all of the water is poison, toxic -- whether it's due to eruptions from the earth or the poisons in the sky. These very basic things are what drives human nature down to almost animalistic qualities. But what still separates us from the animals?"

Stevenson will play an enforcer sent to hunt down Denzel before he can rescue humanity from its dismal fate. The Book of Eli starts shooting in New Mexico in February, with a release date slated for January 15, 2010.

Oooooh you are too kind to us RayVers Nomad! This was a great video and isn't Denzel a sweetie!

I was delighted to see a snippet of Ray being interviewed too [although WHERE is mention of him in the article?????].

I love his squaddie-baddie look. I called hubby in to look at him and said dreamily "oooh doesn't Ray look... er... statuesque!".

Hubby replied "well that's enough of his acting... now what about the way he looks!". I shall see my solicitor tomorrow. It's grounds for irreconcileable differences isn't it?!

Actually I think statuesque is the perfect word. I swear he looks a foot taller than before and the way he's holding his weapon is *gulp* sheer magnificence. Oh and is that a Crombie he's wearing? Bloody hell! Must be hot in New Mexico in that!

I'm SO looking forward to seeing more of him as Redridge in BoE!

The Entertainment Tonight interview was postponed because of some Anna Nicole Smith story. Ew. But here it is, in any case. Denzel! Clicky to see the video.

It's the end of the world as we know it! Only ET's Kevin Frazier is on the closed New Mexico set of the apocalyptic 'The Book of Eli' with Denzel Washington, who battles his way across the desolate wasteland of a near-future America.

"Let me tell you something, no matter what people say, I did all the fights myself," Denzel tells Kevin. "Have you seen any of the fights yet? I fight 15 guys myself."

Denzel plays a lone warrior named Eli, who determines that it's his destiny to bring civilization back from the brink of destruction -- and save the future of humanity. Out next year, the film also stars Gary Oldman, Jennifer Beals and Mila Kunis.

"Of all the movies I made, I never had to do anything like this," says Denzel, who has kept in shape by boxing over the last 15 years. "A lot of the fun on this job so far is that it's physically demanding. It takes you further into the flick."

The film is directed by The Hughes Brothers, Allen and Albert ('From Hell,' 'Dead Presidents'), and Allen says, "It's great working with Denzel, Gary, [Mila] and Jennifer, because it's basically like you get all the toys. Everybody's stepped their game up, and everybody's having fun."

"I would dare anyone to look for any major motion picture star on [Denzel's] level that has done as much action in one take, one shot, with no cuts as he did in this film," adds Albert. "Last time I can remember that happening was Bruce Lee in 'Enter the Dragon,' 1973."

Working with a twin brother, well, that's a different story. "He's my hard drive backup," says Allen, facetiously. "That's all there is to it. He's just waiting around to donate his organs to me. I was born first. He's an afterthought." Albert disagrees, of course. "With twins, the lines always blur," he says, pointing out that people always ask them about how they divvy up the directing duties: he focuses more on the actors, while Allen focuses more on the camera work.

Mila's character is the daughter of Jennifer Beals, with Gary Oldman as her stepfather, and she goes on a journey with Eli in a wasteland where there's barely any food or water. "The sun exploded. It's crazy," she says. "All the trees are dead, everything green is no longer there, there are no books, there's no literature, no education. It's the future, but imagine the future as of 2000 years ago."

Allen elaborates on the setting: "In 2030, there's very few pockets of civilization," he explains. "People are like cannibals; there's stretches of not seeing people for long distances; Denzel's character doesn't see anybody for like the first ten minutes until he reaches this town. He comes for water?"

See what happens when 'TheBook of Eli' hits theaters next year. In the meantime, watch ET for more on-the-set secrets!

*Foams up*

Ray is back with a buzzcut and his darling son is a redhead!!! As the mother of a strawberry blonde daughter I can say what a wonderful looker he is [as IF he'd be anything else?!].

*sighs sweetly and dreamily*

We should have had lots of delightful red-headed babies Ray...

And what a tremendous thing Ray did to take time out to go to talk to students at UNM.

*Sigh*

Just another reason to love him...

I wish we had a transcript of Ray's visit. Thank you for reposting this link Nomad. The picture didn't load the first time I went here. Now I can see Ray and his darling boy. Goodness! He's walking. Where does the time go...
