Dear Rome friends, This afternoon I received the very sad news that one of us has passed. Elare/Evod passed away in her apt. sometime last week. All I know right now is that it was probably heart-related. My heart really breaks concerning this, for she had recently completed her novel on Pompeii and was seeking an agent. Elare was a gifted, intelligent, amazing woman. More than any one person she assisted and contributed to my own work. We spent many hours on the phone together and copious emails to one-another, discussing our work and bouncing ideas off one another. We had many laughs, lots of fun joking around, and even though we never got to meet in the flesh, I can honestly say that she was one of my closest friends. I know how Elare was great at contributing to the threads here, and sometimes sparring with some of us with her wilful opinions! I will miss her contributions to my own work. Her ideas, wisdom concerning literary work, and vivid imagination concerning the Roman world was worth more to me and to many of you (I'm sure) than almost anything. Be at peace, my dear friend Elare. You are loved. You will be missed. May every blessing go with you. Love, Hyker.

I think the room where you write is a great idea.

That's wonderful Hyker. I am sure it provides her Mother comfort to know Evod had such a great friend in you.

I had a poignant surprise day before yesterday. Arriving home from work, there was a letter addressed from me from Ohio. Uncertain what it was, I opened to find that Evod/Elare's Mother had sent me a beautiful photo of her daughter. She wanted me to have a photo of the amazing woman I had never been able to meet beyond the internet. It made my day. My husband suggested I frame it and put it in the room where I write. That way, she can continue to inspire me.

Blessings, all..... Thank you, hyker. I'm so sorry for your loss, and I have Elare's friends (encountered on the HBO boards and elsewhere) and family in my thoughts. I enjoyed chatting a bit with her in the SCBG, and interacting with her a bit on these boards. I heard the Rolling Stones' song "Girl with Faraway Eyes" a bit ago. Thought of Evod/Elare. She gave people a look at distant places and distant times... I hope her book will be published. I'm glad that she found enjoyment working on it.

Someone sent me a private message via ROME site email. It did not get to me. I still have the app showing that it was sent. Cannot access it. Please send it to hyker1@hotmail.com. Thanks!

Blessings, all..... Thank you for keeping us all informed. It's just so hard to believe when you are in a correspondence with someone one day and then they are gone the next. My last words to her were about her book. I had hoped she would not become disuaded by rejections. I was about to paint my walls and she was giving me her input on her favorite Roman wall painting recently. She asked what subject I was going to paint and I told her that I wanted one to be of the forum from the Temple of Vesta. This is just very hard to deal with.

Dear Rome Friends, OK, tonight I was able to speak to Elare's mother. It was a great relief personally, and I have such deep respect for her and what she has been through. Elare was "buried" Roman-style... through cremation, which would probably have been her preference. When she died, she was watching television, something that she really enjoyed and something that also relaxed her. Mrs. D. commented on how much Elare loved the ROME boards and that she had made so many wonderful friends on these threads. She was really proud of her daughter, especially since she did finally finish her novel. Someday, she intends to see it published. That would please Elare greatly. It should also please all of us! She wishes to thank the ROME friends who respected Elare for her wit, humor, and intellectual capacity. This being said, I feel like I can move forward. Elare would have wanted me to. Blessings, all.....

Romies, I will hopefully hear more soon. I have had some contact with one of Elare's friends in her home town. So, when I know more about her passing, I will let you know.

I don't know what to say here. For those here who had the privilege to correspond via e-mail and PM with EVOD.....they may know the story of her original user name. I have a feeling....she wouldn't mind me taking this post to express myself with a story about who she was. The name Evod is an anagram. The letters contain her real name, which will remain private. She told me that when she first used her name she came under fire because of it and it seemed to attract a fight....that she was willing to defend herself against. But wisely she chose another name. But EVODs name is a symbol that I always think of, when I think of her. I am stuck in one place and never seem to get away to see the places I want to see. Evod did those things and really went to those places and I am honored to carry, if even just a small amount, her memories and experiences as she was so well able to communicate. I had hoped to make it down to see the Pompeii Exhibit at the Getty Museum, one of M's favorite spots. I had told her that we could meet up for lunch and she offered to give me a tour. I was hoping for it as a birthday trip, but California is going crazy and Jeff works for the state. We opted to see Tut in San Francisco and tour the De Young Museums instead to save money. I will eventually make it to the Getty Museum.....but now it really will not be the experience it could have been. I remember Evod took my Great Grandfathers name and was able to locate him and his son on the Ellis Island website. I shared that with my Family when my mother had passed. Anyway... Peace M.
