There are many small human details in "Rome" that I find intriguing and "ring true" . For examples: (1) When Octavia and Atia are giddily shopping for jewelry in the local mart. The slave (Eleni?) steps in and closes the deal with no nonsense. I've seen that a thousand times as have most of us. (2) Lucius and Titus look at the stars -- as we all do -- and speculate on their origin. This is a universal human experience, I think. Any others? I hope this subject won't deteriorate into a "chat". -- Beagle Message was edited by Beagle914 at Jan 4, 2006 9:40 PM Message was edited by Beagle914 at Jan 4, 2006 9:41 PM Message was edited by Beagle914 at Jan 4, 2006 9:51 PM

Don't forget to look to the South tonight to see Jupiter, Venus and the crescent moon really close. I can see them now in the twilight. Lady C, I hadn't heard from anybody that saw iot, although my wife said she saw a very bright meteor on her way to work, not that one but maybe part of the same matter. You can see the one in Canada on You Tube. -- " "A Man must have a Code" The Bunk "Its what a war is. Once you in it you in it." Slim Charles "That Halibut is good enough for Jehovah!!! Any of our friends here from Canada? Or close to it? I've been hearing/reading about the comet that landed somewhere there. According to the video on a police cam, night became day, at least for a few seconds. Anyone with more info? Or even a personal observance of it? I had kind of been a little lax in my celestial observations. We had a very bright full moon earlier this month. I looked up this evening and to the Southwest saw two very bright stars, pretty close together, since I had been watching Jupiter since midsummer I knew one was Jupiter and the other had to be the brightest object in the sky besides the sun and moon, Venus. And so it was. See Venus and Jupiter and the Moon in close proximity very soon. The ancients would probably place some significance in this event. Maybe a good omen for Obama. Well one thing for sure, It can't hurt. As I drove home I paid attention to the two planets but as I said earlier when I got home Venus is below the horizon created by the canyon wall behind mey house. I could still see Jupiter, but no Venus. P.S. I must have been wrong about the 3rd grade in an earlier post. If Pat was in the 6th grade when JFK was assasinated I must have at least been in the 5th. Thanks to and Alkibiades and Legatus for reviving this moribund thread if only for a quick look. I, Beagle have been following and contributing to some threads on the Bill Maher, Real Time boards . What a colossal waste of time! Endless spamming, trolling and mind-numbing sloganeering is the general content with only a soupçon of rational discussion and useful information. Now that George Bush and the Republicans are fading away to be replaced by Barack Obama and his cohort, there will be little to sustain either Maher or his fans. Even aretzios rarely posts there anymore. Oh, to be in Rome again... -- I, Beagle CMXIV, am the author of this post; opinions expressed are my own.

She's as blind as Lyde. I do believe you're correct, my friend. (And welcome back to the forum...from someone who's rarely here herself!) Maybe her sightless condition explains why that silly bridge doesn't go anywhere. She's quite blind, except when it's necessary to pick out a new wardrobe. I'm afraid it's too late to suggest that she become a celibate priestess like Lyde. [Hey, I live in New York State, but I can see New Jersey from my front door--honest!]

So, this is the only great old Rome thread left? Hooray for Beagle! Did you notice that Sarah Palin wears VERY thick eyeglasses, and that she does not seems to notice obvious things? I believe Sarah might be blind. Can she see obvious political things going on around her? No. Does she claim to see Russia from her porch? Yes. She can't see. It's obvious. She's as blind as Lyde.

I would like to Thank Stardate announcer Sandy Wood and the McDonald Observatory in Fort Davis, Texas for letting me know that Saturn now rises early in the East. If you recall back in August I said that I had caught Saturn in the evening but it had drifted below the horizon and I said I expected it to rise again in the East but I had no idea how long it would take, and expected it to be out of site for a while. Well it was not gone long so this morning I got up at about 6:00 AM and started perusing the Eastern Sky and saw a fairly bright yellow star that I was pretty sure was Saturn almost due East. I could see it well when I stood up but I could not look at it in the early hours through my telescope because it is short and there are some low obstructions (I need to figure a better place to place the telescope) but even as dawn was breaking I was able to pick it out with my telescope and there was no doubt. I could see the rings clearly. I need to figure out a better spot (I have one but it is a climb from the back porch) to place my telsecope. I am doing everything manually and it is supposed to have some pretty slick built in software as well as the ability to take pictures. When you are zoomed in on celestial body in a telescope, the sucker moves awfully quickly, the software tracks it for you. It was also strange for me to see the Big Dipper (Ursa Major) and Cepheus on opposite sides of Polaris as they rotate around it in the North Sky from Evening to morning, but I always seem to see them when UM is on the West. In the morning it is on the East. (Perhaps this changes with the seasons) Again I am for whatever reason watching and observing things that people have done before me for thousands of years but they are new to me. I get a lot better view of stars in the Eastern sky because there is much more light pollution in the West. -- " "A Man must have a Code" The Bunk "Its what a war is. Once you in it you in it." Has it really been that many years, since "The Piano"? Last time I saw her, she was jumping up and down on a bed, playing a childish and willful Queen Isabella of Spain in "Amistad".

One should not forget, however, that film is a symbolic (re)construction, and that as such it goes beyond a reflection of reality. The superficial view of fiction film as mere entertainment contributes to erroneous views on film." Well worth reading, if only to reminisce about the HBO series - still the most memorable they've produced. By contrast, the new HBO series "True Blood" is both banal and wretched. It's worth viewing, though, if only for the experience of watching of Anna Paquin in her micro-skirts and cutoffs. -- I, Beagle CMXIV, am the author of this post; opinions expressed are my own.
