Time for Goodbyes

Well, "Rome" with all the hopes it had raised and the dissapointment it created is coming to and end. I have not as yet watched the penultimate episode and I may not even watch the final show. But I made some good friends and many "debate partners" in this board and I would include in this Cheryl, Ulver, Ilian73, Beagle, Alkibiades, Scott?? and others. We may not have always agreed, but the discussion was always enjoyable and, in most cases, it did not get too heated.

At the end of the series, I have a tremendous sense of a let down. What could have been an excellent series exploring the real drama of a highly dramatic period of history became a soft-porn soap opera that treated history as inconvenience rather than as a story. I think that when most "supporters" later reflect on it, they may come to the same conclusion.

One parting shot. Historical accuracy does not mean filming a documentary. I would submit to all here that a good scriptwriter could have written a far more engaging story working on the real history, not the made-up one. And the period offers so many such opportunities. Wouldn't have been great fun for somebody to write a good script around the conspiracy to kill Caesar? It would have entailed a lot of effort, secret meetings, arguments, raw feelings to engage 50 people in a conspiracy that may have backfired and cost them their lives. I am sure that many changed opinions back and forth. But most of all, the opportunity was missed to structure the "real Romans" with the real concerns about the situations of their lives at the end of the Republic. What animanted any of them to chose a particular side? What was boiling in the streets of Rome that caused so much death and destruction for so long? One would never know from this series. Too bad!!! Maybe somebody with a desire for dramatic television will revisit the subject. Maybe.

It was Aretzios' posts complaining about the lack of historical accuracy that prompted me to read more about the Romans, more than the show itself, so for that I thank him.

I also defended his right to voice his opinion more times than I care to remember, but I'd do the same for anyone, regardless of what they had to say (exception: if they were criticizing me personally, then, not so much *g*)

lol Nøjagtigt! Nej, Ikke rigtigt, det må du undskylde. Det lyder interessant, men desværre jeg taler ikke dansk så godt.

Come on, admit it, I made a difference because I attacked you with my big American breasts. :^O

I meant to also thank you for the extensive list of suggested reading you shared with me. I have all those books in my 'wish list' on Barnes and Noble. Someday, I will find the time to get to them.

Hvad sker her? Er dette en superhemmelig dansker-konspiration? Jeg syntes det er dybt urimeligt at jeg ikke er med i klubben.

Participation in these forums has been a real joy for me. Heartfelt gratitude to all the posters who have taken the time to share historical knowledge, philosophy, character analysis, wit, and humor. I will really miss the robust and passionate discussion on these boards and the opportunity to share my interest in the period of the Late Republic, which is not otherwise available to me. Thank you, everyone - I have enjoyed knowing you.

I am going to miss the discussions (and disagreements!) over historically correct episodes-I learned so much from these discussions. Lets not leave! Lets stay as long as we can, discuss it to death, and regularly berate the HBO dorks for cancelling one of the best things on TV. What will they do next, a reality series about Britany and her rehab episodes? I do not know where these people get their ideas as to what people like and dislike. seems like anything with the least bit of intelligence to it is wiped out for crap. And the movies they show are not all that either. Most are dumb.

Farewell…

Although I'll continue to attend this forum and - perhaps - even participate a little, many of you won't and inevitably all will depart at some point.

Too many intelligent and impassioned friends for me to begin naming them, so I won't name any. You know if you're one of those and to you I send the same words that Brutus sent his mother. (Insert "something suitable" here)

Not "Goodbye": - Hasta luego, Auf wiedersehn, Au revoir…

"Be seeing you", say…
