On the Dante vs. Smith subject...I think Dante is WAY hotter than Smith. I would love to see Dante in the sequel.

I really didn't remember that scene so I had to go back and watch "Luck be an old Lady" in season 5, where all the girls went to Atlantic city. It was at the end of this episode that Sam broke up with Richard and returned the thong, and his canary diamond that she wore on her middle finger. After running up 11 flights of stairs and arriving worn out and panting, she finds Richard alone, not having sex with someone as she suspected. She tells him she loves him, but she loves herself more, and as she removes the ring and drops it on the table, she drops the thong as well. she had removed the thong while running up the stairs. Carrie's voice over says: Samantha removed her highest bid, her heart, from the table. And that's it. She doesn't say a word about the thong. And in the episode where she hooks up with Richard and cheats on Smith, she hardly says anything to him at all other than "you look good" and "F*** you" when Richard mocks Smith and his friends. Like I said, I would have liked to see her tell him where to stick the thong, but she didn't.

Merce:
I remember Sam returning the thong to Richard and
telling him "Give this thing to your next girlfriend~and
let her be uncomfortable"
Sam did "see Smith for the very first time after she
degraded herself by having sex with Richard"~she knew
she'd made a major mistake!

I would have liked to see her return the thong, but maybe the episode had to go the way it did for her to really appreciate Smith. Even Carrie's voice over said she "saw Smith for the very first time."

Merce, Marlene,
Probably right on both accounts, although, I'd still say Sam's self-esteem is involved also.
She also recognizes she has problems when right after she says (as Merce, you describe) "I don't know what's wrong with me."
I'd have to re-watch that episode as much was going on in it as you all demonstrate.

Clare: I had to think about what you said re: Sam and her "wounded self esteem" and I have come to the conclusion that I don't think that's it. She didn't want to go to the Teen Posse party until she knew Richard was hosting it. She went there deliberately to hook up with Richard, and at this point she regarded Smith as an embarrassingly younger man, just a blip on her radar. Look at how she treated him when he wanted to wait in line..."Oh, grow UP!" she snapped as she dragged him to the front of the line. And when Richard asked her mockingly how long she'd been "babysitting", she got defensive. She couldn't have cared less if he was surrounded by hot young things, or lions, tigers and bears. She wanted to do her own thing; she even said "you go play with your friends, and I'll play with mine." But once she got away with Richard and they were doing their thing, she realized what a mistake she'd made and what she was throwing away. She even said to Smith when she came back "I don't know what's wrong with me." I don't think the fact that Smith was attractive to younger women had much to do with her behavior at that point.

Merce,
I agree with much of what you wrote. Re: Samantha "cheating" on Smith, I also thought that was incredibly poignant in the series. All these young girls were gathering around Smith for autographs and Sam stood to the side (obviously, her self-esteem wounded)--she goes upstairs with Richard. BUT when she comes back down the elevator, Smith is sitting there waiting for her; he gets her, he knows why she did what she did and while he doesn't like it (I don't suppose) he isn't going to walk out because of that. It wasn't (at that point) about Sam getting too wrapped up in Smith's life; it was that Smith was getting all this attention from younger females and it hit Sam's ego hard. Smith was extremely mature for his age in many ways. I think the movie could have handled the Sam situation much better. As in...what does it look like for a woman to be with a man but not lose herself in HIS life (we know that is possible but our culture doesn't encourage it.)
I'd like to see Sam continue to mature (not go backward) but then again, perhaps Sam doesn't want to or can't. Then we're watching dysfunction and (I think) should call it for what it is. (Meaning getting your self-esteem highs from screwing around.) And, yes, many men do that, and I'd say that's dysfunctional too. It's just not been viewed that way in our culture. So rather than female having to be like males, it would be a good thing if both males and females could grow up. And movies can show that process in interesting ways. SATC series showed forward movement much of the time. Not always, but it was there.

I agree with you, and that's why she left Smith, because Dante is like her and that will be great to make them see each other again and let her see what she really want.
I'm not talking about what Samantha should do, i'm talking about what can bring Dante to the sequel, you don't want a soap, you want new spicy stories about the girls and fan loved Dante.

I admit to being disappointed that Samantha couldn't stay committed to Smith, he certainly loved her completely and was loyal to her. BUT in the series she never told him that she loved him, only that "you have meant more to me than any man I've ever known." For her, that was saying a lot. And her cheating on Smith was something the series had already covered, so I'm glad at least they didn't backslide to that degree. I really think that Sam's biggest problem was living in a place she was unhappy, and living an unfulfilling life. Her feelings for Smith were secondary to that. Like she said, she NEVER lived her life for a man in her life, and she was too old to start now. To me this isn't about hot 1 night stands, it's about standing for something in your own mind. She lost her identity when she submerged herself in Smith and she needs to find herself again. Maybe she'll find love for Smith when she's a whole person, or maybe she'll move on. But I don't think a quick bang with Dante would fix her. (He IS cute though!)

First I loved Smith in the series, but you have to admit with time he didn't get better and the girls look better than him ,and second go to www.gillesmarini.com and you will see the" fake body " this is real and before putting some ridiculous comment about what's fake or not you should appreciate the new star,he's hot , sexy , and real. Just to perfect for you.

Agree, Beachy. Smith (to me) has it all over the other. As I said in another post, that whole part, Sam spying on naked man next door who has playmates (with bodies that look--to me--fake) didn't ring true. If Sam wants to leave Smith, then do...go back to NYC. Sam and Richard went together better than Sam and Naked Man (my opinion again.) Sam, in the movie is acting no different than Richard anyway...or getting there. Smith takes the cake--all the way and when he grabbed that razor and shaved his own head when Sam was going through chemo...wow...probably my favorite scene in SATC series ever.
