Sex And The City on DVD..

After hearing people rave about how much better the original episodes were compared to the edited versions on TBS which I have been watching...

I finally broke down and bought the first two seasons on DVD from TBS. (They seem to have the lowest price).

I had been told that the original shows were 30 minutes long without commercials on HBO--but to my disappointment they are only clocking in at about 22 minutes each on DVD. And these ARE the exact, original episodes as shown on HBO.

I am seeing a lot of new scenes/footage I hadn't seen on TBS, sometimes it's like watching an entirely new show. So that is probably worth the cost of the DVDs, as I would have always wondered what I had missed on TBS.

But to be honest-the main difference seems to be the language and sex scenes. I had no idea they had used so much profanity in the original episodes, and sometimes entire lines of dialogue have been changed when they were edited for TBS. It makes it a little harder to watch, with the constant use of the F word, etc. I've only seen the TBS versions for awhile, so this is quite a change for me.

I also noticed there is a lot more nudity shown, mostly with the girls being topless. I have always loved this show because it was so perfectly cast, and the ensemble actors were so great. But frankly, now that I am seeing 'more' of them, and hearing how they talked originally; I'm afraid I have lost some respect for these actors.

This entire series is about empowered females; all highly intelligent, cultured, educated, professionally successful and stylish. Women who are 'above the heap' so to speak, and self-aware in terms of having self-esteem. So it's somewhat of a disappointment to see the actresses playing these roles 'selling out' by allowing themselves to be filmed with partial nudity, and using a lot of vulgar language. It cheapens their characters, and I am surprised they would agree to those roles considering they are doing exactly what their characters would never allow. Letting themselves be used basically for sexual gratification on a TV show.

Just saddens me to see these brilliantly talented actresses degrade themselves with so much nudity and vulgar language. Just to be in a TV show. I almost liked the show better in PG format.

It is weird, seeing how much they changed some of the scenes from the original to the PG version. Entire lines of dialogue have been changed, which means they had to re-film certain scenes and have the actors come back in to re-loop their lines of dialogue. IE: The scene where Carrie is in the bathroom, and can't get her diaphram out. What I saw on TBS, was Samantha offered to help her and Carrie said no, she could do it herself. She then remarked that if she had let Samantha help her with something so intimate, she would have needed therapy the rest of her life.

But in the original R version-Carrie allows Samantha to come into the bathroom to help her and that is the end of the scene. There is no additional dialogue. Quite a difference.

So although I am glad to finally see the original versions--I am somewhat disappointed in the amount of gratuitous sex and profanity used. I get that the show is about sex, but it was pretty great on TBS without so much of it. Hearing these girls use profanity so much really changes their characters to me, it makes them seem less likeable and more vulgar. I am actually glad I had the chance to enjoy the PG version for so long before seeing how the show was actually created.

And apparently the show was never a full 30 minutes, these episodes on DVD (complete with more extended intro/theme song) are only 22-23 minutes long. Period, and they are completely original. But there is enough added footage compared to TBS versions, that it still makes the DVD price worthwhile, barely.

Just not sure why they had to ruin such a great show with so much offensive language, it was just as good if not easier to watch without it.

Welcome, adh1006!

I'm not aware of any websites myself, but Cfiles mentioned in an earlier post on this thread that there was a link posted somewhere and you could watch shows for free. She didn't get specific though. Hey, Cfiles, you out there? Can you help adh1006 out?

BTW, if you still have HBO and are signed up for On Demand, Sex and the city is still rerun there. They only have a few episodes at a time and change them about once a month, so if you watch them all in one night then you are stuck with nothing for quite a while! Frustrating! :( But...it is a better option than going without. There is also Netflix, where you can rent the seasons just like any other movie they offer. For myself, I had to buy all the seasons because I love to rewatch them whenever the mood strikes. Feel free to log in here anytime you feel like discussing episodes with those of us still hanging out here. Cfiles and I have hashed over quite a bit of old ground on this thread. Maybe others will come back as it gets closer to the time the new movie will come out: May 2010! Can't wait!

I have to be honest. I tried to watch SATC when it was on HBO, but I just couldn't get into it. Well, one night I was going through the channels, and I stumbled upon reruns on FOX and TBS. That's what I've been watching, and I really like it. I thought the movie was great. Are there any websites where I can watch episodes?

I was following SJP on Twitter also, she is on there. But she never uses it. She sent out a few messages on the day she registered (her Birthday, March 25), and that was it. So I stopped following her.

BTW; I believe it is the real Kim Cattrall on Twitter. She appears to be very nice, and very sweet and ends her tweets with lots of 'xxx' (hugs). But I stopped following her, because she doesn't really use Twitter that much and she didn't really seem to have much to say. Probably very busy. Just a tweet or two a day, very general without much info.

If you follow too many people, it gets hard keeping up reading all their comments on the home page. So I pare it down from time to time, and decided to stop following her as she just wasn't saying much on Twitter.

But what she did say was very nice, she really seems to appreciate people who follow her there.

Thanks Merce;

Actually I did used to sing professionally. I spent years building my career in San Diego, and ended up in a local country/oldies band. I also sat in a lot with different groups, friends around town. Did some recording.

I was sent a request yesterday to do another 'End Hunger Now' video from the media company helping to run the campaign, so I did two more videos last night. These are two takes of the same scripted video I wrote really fast.

Take One:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gnw02VJd2cE&feature=channel_page

Take Two:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JjnKCl79wYA&feature=channel_page

I think the second one is better, personally.

But the I got the stomach flu really badly last night, so I am sick as a dog right now. I'm glad I got those videos done when I did last night before it really set in. Couldn't sleep at all because of the pain/nausea.

Thanks for your compliments, appreciate them. The demo is really old, back in 1992. I was just starting out in the band when I did that. I probably sound better live, and more developed years later. But I haven't been out to sing in awhile due to various reasons.

Hoping to do some home recording of my own, if I can ever get to it. We have a digital piano and I bought a USB cord to connect it to the Mac for direct recording. I would still need a decent USB mic..

Hi Cfiles: I looked at both your videos and I must say I was very impressed with the quality in your music and your singing. You should be a professional singer in my opinion. I know you've said you've sung in public, but hearing is believing. Your song is very powerful. Don't worry too much about what you look like in the video, it's the message that's important. You seem like a caring person who wants to make a difference and that comes through loud and clear. Best of luck to you in your endeavors.

Thanks, I agree it's getting a lot worse out there and there are a lot of mentally ill people or unstable people not getting the help they need.

I did report everything that happened to the Grocery Store (Vons) Corp. HQ in a detailed email, so hopefully other customers won't have to go through what I did. They could check the cameras in the store also.

As for MPK-maybe. I don't find it easy myself to use the 'S' word or 'F' word at all, it would be very foreign or uncomfortable as I just didn't come from a background where profanity was used at all. It gets blurted out every now and then, but rarely. Unfortunately, values of society have changed a great deal in recent years and it's becoming far too common, especially among younger generations. There has been a real decline in values which I have been meaning to write about.

But facts are facts, I mean it's black and white whether someone says a certain word so many times; so he really didn't have his own facts straight on his own show! And you're probably right, he is so into that lifestyle he may not notice it as much. Which is sad. My own interests lie in writing, music, media, etc. but seeing more and more the values of people working in TV and film, etc. makes me wonder if I would ever have fit in.

BTW I sent in a video to the Ashton Kutcher 'End Hunger Now' campaign, just for the practice and experience of trying something new. I am very self-conscious on a web cam, so it wasn't easy! But if you're curious to check it out the You Tube version is:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNVczFZ7JQc&feature=channel_page

Don't laugh! I look dorky on camera lol. The only other experience I've really had on camera is when I broadcast from my Justin.TV channel every now and then, which isn't much. It's completely different than singing on a stage. Singing comes much more naturally to me, and I don't have to look at myself lol.

You can also go into You Tube, and put 'End Hunger Now' into the search window, and it will come up with just those videos for the campaign. For some reason, mine is now on the first page of those, at the bottom. Kind of embarrassing! But it was a really good cause, so I took the plunge. Figured it would be a good experience to try something new, and learn a different skill using the Mac web cam directly.

And just for kicks, my channel is: www.Justin.TV/TheCFiles

After I created the video; I broadcasted a bit, which is still in archives just for the practice and fun since I had all the make up on, etc. Not many came in, but I did sort of a running monologue about my history lol. Real exciting..

That is SO cool about the Twitter with (possibly) the real Kim Cattrall! I don't get into Twitter or any of those other things that people are getting into these days. I recently signed up for FAcebook, just so I could see the pictures my stepdaughter took of the up north fire. Pretty devastating. As far as MPK is concerned and his opinion of "foul" language, it's kind of a relative thing whether you think someone uses it a lot or not. Maybe in HIS circle, these words are so common place that SJP's use seems like it's almost nonexistent by comparison. I myself try not to use bad language, as I feel it's simply sloppy use of vocabulary and promotes a lack of thought in your conversations, as well as being potentially offensive to others. It's so easy to say "s" this and "f" that rather than actually thinking of something more descriptive and accurate to say. By the way, try not to let that lunatic in the store get you down too much. There are a lot of people out there with mental health issues, and you just never know what will set them off. MIght not even have been YOU, maybe someone on the phone set him off. My husband was getting his change at a McD's drive through window, and the woman behind him actually got out of her car, stormed up to the window, and screamed at him to get out of her way. He told the workers in the window to call the police, as he wasn't going to move. The crazy woman got back in her car, drove around him with screeching tires and zoomed off down the street. Who knows about people sometimes. I work in a social services agency for the state, and I can tell you, it's getting pretty desperate out there. Makes me appreciate what I have!

PS: Well I've already talked pretty extensively about the things in the HBO DVDs that I wasn't comfortable with, so I won't go into all that again to answer your question.

But one thing on the final commentaries really stood out. MPK was talking about Carrie using the 'S' word and 'F' word in one scene. He actually said she 'hardly ever used the "S" word' which was bizarre. Remember me mentioning that?

One of the things that bothered me the most about her character on HBO was her frequent use of the S word! She may not have been Samantha or showed nudity, but she used a lot of language. I couldn't believe MPK said that??!! How odd, it wasn't true at all.

Thanks Merce, it is a relief to finally be through with seeing them all the first time.

BTW, I am on Twitter now under: TheCFiles

Found Kim Cattrall there, don't know for sure if it's really her but I believe so. There are a lot of well known artists who do do their own Twitters, and I think it's great that they make the effort.

Seems like her-very nice person, very nice responses. Doesn't really Tweet much but it's fun having her there anyway! I recently sent her a message saying I had just bought the entire show on DVD LOL. She did mention on Twitter that the second SATC movie was 'amazing' so apparently she is in it, and doesn't sound like anything bad is happening to her. Good to know!

I'm sure I will refer back to SATC DVDs in time, just really stressed and overwhelmed right now with life. Some guy at a local DVD Kiosk just verbally assaulted me really badly in a grocery store, I was traumatized.

He started yelling at me because when the people in front of me in line were finished, I moved forward to use the rental kiosk. He claimed he was in line-but he was standing several feet away leaning against a display cause and talking on his cell. He really went after me, it was shocking. I had to call for the Manager, and then the guy just blamed it all on me. He even supposedly called '911' which is actually against the law when it isn't necessary. He threatened to, and I thought well go ahead and embarrass yourself, I didn't do anything wrong!

Anyway, saw 'Marley & Me' and since I was already emotional cried my eyes out at the end. That was a really good movie! I had to wait for the guy to leave the store, before going back in to get it. Had to stand in line all over again. I am REALLY upset about it. I just emailed the Corp. office of the grocery store it happened in, to tell them what happened and what they can do to make sure their customers don't have to go through that.

Congrats! You are officially all caught up with the rest of us. Anything surprising or gratifying, or even disappointing in the full-size versions? I know that is a lot of watching. I don't get much opportunity anymore to just sit and watch the show...Between work and home I always seem to have too much going on. But every now and then I just get to missing "the girls" and I'll give some thought as to which season I want to experience again. At the beginning they were more footloose and fancy free than in the later episodes when they all kind of got bogged down with heartbreaks and relationships. But sometimes the maturity and growth they experienced, as well as their deepening relationships with each other as well as their significant others, was very appealing and soothing to watch in the later episodes. Especially when I'm feeling a little down, or my friends seem too busy for me and my problems. Don't blame you for taking a break, but if you're at all like me you'll be happy to have them there whenever you want them. Enjoy!

News Flash..

FINALLY finished all of the SATC DVDs, first run-through! Watched finale of series (both halves) commentaries last night. Whew, that was a lot of TV watching but well worth it.

Hope to do a second run-through at some point, but taking a break for now!

Thanks Merce, some of the extras were kind of tedious. But the writing aspect interests me, so I felt I shouldn't miss the seminars as it gives some insight into TV production and writing.

Tonight-hoping to watch Season 6, Part 2 commentaries. Not sure how many, forgot to check. May finish tonight, or hopefully tomorrow night. I also prefer the episodes themselves, but again the behind the scenes stuff interests me so making myself watch commentaries as well.

Cfiles: I've had my DVD set for awhile, and the "extras" are not favorites of mind. It's been a long time since I've watched any of them. If I have ANY time at all for "my girls" I like to watch an episode or 2. I kind of go in streaks; sometimes I'll stay up late and watch episodes, other times my sets gather dust for weeks. I have to kind of plan for some alone time, and I always enjoy visiting the SATC universe. I seem to watch more in the winter and when the weather is bad, naturally. Glad you've enjoyed getting through all the original episodes. Anytime you want to discuss any aspects of the show, feel free to log in and chat away!
