SFU Blood

Just 'cuz....

AB's new series, True Blood, premieres tonight. Although this place is deader than dead, I'm creating this thread in case any restless SFUnatics, Narmnuts or Alumni feel like avoiding the potential clutter and congestion of the actual True Blood Boards...yet feel compelled to say something -- anything -- about True Blood (especially as it relates to SFU).

Ain't, of course, holding my breath in the hopes that this exercise in futility will exorcise the stench of death from this place. Ain't, in truth, even sure I harbor any such hopes. Hell...I ain't even sure that I'll be able to muster the enthusiasm to say anything more about True Blood than this. (I'll definitely be watching, but I must admit...I wish I were, at present, more excited about the prospect.)

Thread bare...just a gesture made in an effort to...well...just a gesture made...just 'cuz.

And a personal note to you, FB...seeing as you seem to be one of the few who actually still checks this place out and makes a comment occasionally...any Mad Mention you might want to make on this thread would be at least as welcome as it would probably prove futile. (Love the way they keep stressing the timescape in S2 -- Jackie's guided tour of the White House on Valentine's day, Glenn's ticker-tape parade and the AA crash in Jamaica Bay, Marilyn singing "Happy Birthday" to JFK, the weekend of Memorial Day. Still a little puzzled by the skipped year and why they did it...but it seems pointed and purposeful...and they're dealing with the missing year, especially as it relates to Peggy's situation, with rationed revelations and flashbacks. Obvious enough to me that Don's the show's main character...but I've always felt that somehow Peggy's personal and professional evolution would serve as the show's most definitive element.) Anyway...a general "WOW!!!" for Sunday night TV. MM...and now we've got TB...and, in but three weeks, Dex will be fast upon us. Insofar as Sunday night is really the only night I can watch TV "real time"...I feel fortunate indeed.

I am addicted to both of those shows too. I catch Mad Men On Demand as well. I love being able to watch them over again too. I always seem to catch something I missed.

OK just watched tonight's episode and I found it rather interesting, and I know that you all would get this that:

S

P

O

I

L

E

R

S

P

A

C

E

the one episode that had a funeral was not written or directed by Alan Ball! ;)

I am totally addicted to both True Blood and Mad Men. Thank God for In Demand because I manage to miss them both every Sunday night. I think AB hit a homer with True Blood, it's gory but intriguing.

i just love how they weave real events into the storyline.
i'm looking forward to what they do with the jfk assassination.

i also loved "daddy day" on dex. hah. but you know what i loved
the MOST? the sheer joy, the utter, rapturous ecstasy, the serene calm
that came from the knowledge that lila is morally, ethic'lly, spiritually, physically, positively, absolutely, undeniably and reliably DEAD.
and she's not only merely dead, she's really most sincerely dead.
that, and i thought Quinn was hot.

hey, btw, fellow breaking bad fans...
there's a marathon wed night. all seven episodes from season one.
gentlepeople, start your dvrs.

Know what you mean, FB. It's late and I don't have time right now to go into any real detail about what actually happened on Dex (although I will say that Dexter's blood splatter lecture for Daddy's Day was too fucking funny). It just felt so comfortable (so good) to have it back. The writing was reassuringly...assured. Right, right...bloody well right (what you said...and how it felt).

True Blood tonight fell nothing short of solidly...okay. But with Dex and Mad Men flexing confidently and easily their far superior stuff this Sunday night, TB was left that much more miiserably pale and bloodless in comparison.

Just a note on the MM 1962 timeline. Marilyn died on August 4th, and allusions were made to the upcoming September 25th Patterson-Liston Heavyweight Championship Fight.

Hey, lil! Long time. Been watching True Blood at all?

One way or the other, Dex starts tonight, and I'm sure you're looking forward to that. Dex and TB are on at the same time here, but -- what with the multiple showings of each and OnDemand access -- that scheduling conflict doesn't create any major problem.

And, FWIW, FB...I did just try to create a new thread to reopen The Dexter Fisher File and wasn't (for whatever reason) able to. I'll give it another shot later.

Regardless, enjoy the return of our favorite serial killer tonight, ladies.

yep. how nice to see an award go to someone who truly deserved it,
especially for a show that hardly anyone watched, had a very short
season, and on a network not known for original programming.
that's pretty impressive. that's how awards are SUPPOSED to be
given... merit over popularity. i'm very happy for him.

Hell, no, I didn't know. As I told you, I pay little or no attention to the Emmys...even when I don't forget them altogether. I thought I saw (somewhere...in a headline) that Spader (and Mad Men) had won...and that's about as much as I knew about it. Sure as hell didn't pursue the matter any further. Too cool for Cranston (and AMC). You're well aware that I thought his performance truly did kick ass and was most deserving of the recognition.

groggy...
i was out of town over the weekend, but set the dvr to record the emmys. it was great fun fast forwarding through not only the commercials but most of the show itself, just to get to the juicy parts. i was rooting for glenn close, of course, and was thrilled that she won. a nice surprise was the other win for damages, for best supporting actor. he was amazing on the show. too bad his character offed himself, and won't be back next season. james spader pretty much does kick ass on boston legal, but you do know that brian cranston won, don't you? i practically jumped for joy! he looked great, in his fabulously bald head, black shirt and silver necktie. wow. i really thought they would give it to jon hamm, just because Mad Men seemed like a shoe-in for everything... and Breaking Bad only had 7 episodes. just 7! brian cranston is the one who truly kicked ass. good for him!! sorry that dexter didn't win anything, but there was some stiff competition. mad men really did deserve to win best drama.

well, i'm glad to hear your assessment of TB... glad it's getting better.

Spader must kick some major ass on Boston Legal (or kiss some major ass elsewhere).

Anyway...tuned in to Mad Men on Sunday night after watching True Blood and found myself WTFing all over the place when I found AMC airing a re-fucking-peat. Makes sense, I guess, now. The Emmy's were on Sunday night! I'd forgotten. No doubt AMC figured a lot of the show's fans would be watching the Emmy's to root for the show. Great to see Mad Men, AMC and the fans got their just rewards.

True Blood seems to be very gradually getting better. At least I've noticed some blocks and stretches of improved (more subtle and controlled) writing. The characters are being established with a little more complexity, vampiric exposition is being integrated without being overly intrusive and it seems the story itself has been set up adequately enough after three eps to, now, take the fuck off.

Then again, maybe I'm just straining to see all that happening because I'd like it to be so.

Will say this though. Alan Ball seems to love kitchens.

I LOVE that! sounds like something a politician would/should say.

Time to fess up. my HBO subscription ran out before Sunday. I had three
free months after switching to Directv. I considered keeping it, but wanted to see what you thought of TB/ep2 first. I'm not running to the phone to re-up. plus, i still think HBO were FOOLS for passing on Mad Men. Fools! do you hear me, tptb? FOOLS. that kind of short-sightedness should not go unpunished. PTHHHHFFFTTT!!! i'll rent the dvds, someday. my only regret is that there's now no good reason to come here. unless.....

groggy, honey, baby, pal o'mine... do you think we should start a little thread for dex? can we do a little dance, and resurrect the old dexter fisher file? that's something i could really sink my teeth into. tb left a bland taste in my mouth. i need real, true blood! bwaah ahhh ahhh...

your fan,
barb

Ep 2 of TB was, well, better. But that's about it. Better. And better than not quite bad ain't necessarily, by comparison, good.

James Spader has won the Emmy three times. Hugh Laurie, zero Emmys, but won Golden Globes, SAGs and others for House. Spader is probably the favorite, and although I love him, it's time for some new blood. I have not seen even one episode of In Treatment, so who knows...Gabriel Byrne had to be good, to get a nomination. But of the newcomers, I think Hamm has the best shot. The critics seem to love Mad Men. It's the kind of show that normally gets embraced by the television academy. Cranston was un-fucking-believable, but I don't think enough of the voters actually watched that show. Their loss, I say!

The fact that I am not compelled to discuss TB beyond what little I've already posted, isn't exactly a good sign. I hear that it does get MUCH better as it goes on. I hope so.
