Even though it's late on this solemn day, let's give a shout out to those loved ones we've lost. My mother and father, John and Claire, my brother and sister, who both died in infancy, my uncle Dave, and J.H.M. Take care of the little guy, Ma and Dad.

We've gone through many animals where I live including a horse and you got used to it. I never hid their dying from my young boys. I figured they might as well get used to it. It's part of life. They handled it very well. I also let them watch them giving birth. Go easy on yourself.

I've had pets my entire life. I love animals. We got these guys as 'grown'. The duck and chicken that were killed were older than the ones who survived. I really thought we knew what we were doing. We were so not prepared for this.

If a wild animal kills another wild animal, well, that's the nature of life, I guess. It's a little easier to handle than something scaling my chicken coop and slaughtering defenseless ducks and chickens.

Growing up on the family ranch, we received all the animals that the folks in town impulsively bought because they were cute as babies, then they grew up to be beasts. One of them was a racoon...and I agree that they are nasty MO-FO's!

We set 4 traps every night. They're smart little fuckers. We relocate them. We let the skunks, foxes, squirrels and whatever go.

We lost Youkilis, the brown call duck, a few hours later so the two survivors have been taken to the NH SPCA to be placed in a safer home. We're really torn up. The Podunk Animal officer was supposed to examine the bodies and call me back but we haven't heard yet. Could be a coyote, feral fisher cat, or a raccoon. Not sure which. Either way both victims were completely decapitated. Not worth the carnage.

Lena, our poor chicken, who was attacked and killed last night inside her own pen. She was a good chicken. She leaves behind her lifemate, Serena, who was by her side every minute the last 3 months, and two ducks, who really seem indifferent to her death. I'm sorry you died so horribly. You didn't deserve it.
