Michigan vs. Ohio State: The Rivalry

Each year, the football programs at Ohio State and Michigan gear up with a common goal: to beat their archrival on the third weekend in November, no matter the rankings, no matter the score. Widely considered college football?s biggest rivalry, these two Big Ten powerhouses frequently dominate the standings, and attract game-day crowds that exceed 100,000 rabid followers.

Steeped in a rich tradition dating back to their inaugural meeting in 1897, this rivalry extends beyond the pursuit of a Big Ten title, and is renewed each year through the pageantry and colliding cultures that distinguish the two schools. Presented four days before the Ohio State Buckeyes take on the Michigan Wolverines at Ann Arbor, HBO Sports will present its first college football documentary, Michigan vs. Ohio State: The Rivalry, which debuts Tuesday, November 13 (10:30-11:30 PM ET/PT), exclusively on HBO.

Few words can describe the feeling I get in the weeks leading up to "the game". Here in Michigan, we can't look too far forward, as the Big Ten conference can make you pay for that. But make no mistake, in the back of our minds is the date in November when Michigan and OSU meet.

I have countless memories watching the game when I was growing up with my family, and little has changed today. It's that special game that you set everything aside for those few hours, just to watch Michigan play OSU. But don't get me wrong, nothing beats viewing the game in person. When you walk into the Big House on that day in November, you get a feeling just how big this rivalry is. I agree that this is the greatest rivalry in College Football, and I'm glad that HBO's first college special is about Michigan and OSU.

I've read a few comments, and as expected, OSU fans have brought up Michigan's first 2 games of the year. I caution you about 2 things. First, there are many teams that are happy they didn't play App state this year. Second, be happy you haven't played Oregon this year as they sure have proven that they're a force. No matter what you say about those games, if Michigan takes care of Wisconsin this week, know that Michigan will be ready for OSU in Ann Arbor. And as many of us know on both sides of this rivalry, if OSU is still ranked #1, it's a recipe for Michigan to win, ruining OSU's chances at a title shot.

After this week's game, it'll be time to start singing, "Oh how I hate, Ohio State", and "Hail to the Victors" - the greatest fight song in college football. See you in Ann Arbor!

I always wanted to have m be undefeated and ranked 2 just behind BUCKEYES being undefeated and ranked 1 for the Big Game. Last year I got my wish and it was the greatest game yet. I have a hard time dealing with my feelings for m. On one hand I want them to be really good when we beat them, but on the other hand I love to see them lose. I think I like it better when they can give us a good game and a trip to the NC or RB is on the line. Luckily nd sucks so bad I can root for their lose every week, which they now deliver.

Every year I become a bigger and bigger tOSU (yep, I add the t for THE) fan. I think that after this year we can dispense with the term "Rebuilding Year" and start to use "Reloading Year".

I cannot wait to see this documentary and for Nov. 17 for the greatest sports rivalry there is.

Go Bucks!!! Beat the stinky ones from up north who shall not be spoken of by name.

You see, we have to 'secretly' root for Michigan prior to our game because they need all the help they can get and we'd like at least SOME competition this year. Do we even need to bring up weeks one and two of this season??? Hate OSU all you want. The feelings are quite mutual. And I believe the song goes "OHHHH, we don't give a damn for the whole state of Michigan, the whole state of Michigan, the whole state of Michigan....." GO BUCKS!

Okay, y'all are just crazy. I am a Michigan grad and fan. There is no doubt if you speak to Michigan people (and I dispute that half the state roots for MSU), we are extremely passionate about this. Along about early October, I start signing the following refrain, and mind you my feelings don't start then, just boil over enough to sing "Oh how I hate, Ohio State". I sing it over and over again, until my wife and daughter beg me to stop. And then I continue. To me, I would rather beat Ohio than win a National Championship. And I hate OSU all year long, and I don't secretly root for them to win, so we have a great game. I want to stomp them from start to finish. I was once presented with the following question, and like Jack Benny, I had to think about it. The question was "If Ohio State was playing Al Qaeda in a football game, who would you root for?" As I said I had to think about it, but in the end I said I'd remain neutral.

I guess maybe I am old enough to remember the days of Bo & Woody with Bob Ufer calling the game on the radio, where we hated each other with a passion. It is the greatest football rivalry around, but maybe some of the youngsters of today aren't yet invested enough. They will be. We're talking about Michigan - which has the largest alumni association in the world. And just to extend the olive branch a small bit - I shall leave you with a joke that both OSU and U of M will enjoy - How many U of M alums does it take to screw in a light bulb? 4 - 1 to screw in the light bulb, 2 to talk about how great we are at doing it, and 1 to sing "Hail to the Victors - the greatest college fight song of all.

Seriously, like I needed another reason to get more jacked up about this game! This documentary is going to be fantastic. I heard they showed it on campus a few nights ago and the reviews from the students are glowing.

As far as the rivalry goes, I agree OSU has the edge because it owns the entire state of Ohio. This rivalry is hands down the best in college sports and I'm delighted that HBO is doing this documentary.

Its kind of funny that all year long I secretly root for Michigan because I want the Big Ten to have wins and I want them to be undefeated when they play us, but on game day its all BUCKEYES and michigan is my sworn enemy.

GO BUCKS!!!

I do agree with both comments below. Nothing matches the Ohio State- Michigan game. I also agree that the state of Michigan is divided between UM-MSU fans. I think the OSU-Michigan game became an obsession for us (OSU FAN) during the John Cooper era because we dominating teams all year just to get our hearts ripped out by Michigan on more than one occasion. I do root for Michigan all year because I want the teams to be undefeated going into the game.

Ohio State basically OWNS the state of Ohio...there are no other schools that they have to compete with there so most of the people in Ohio are Ohio State Fans. Everywhere you go in Ohio (and parts of West Virginia and Penn) is die hard Red and Silver. Plus Columbus us the biggest city in Ohio and without a pro team there they dedicate everything to OSU.

In Michigan we have to share the state with MSU fans (lord help them) so only about HALF the state roots for U-M. We do however have a large nationwide fan base, since many of our alumn actually LEAVE the state of Michigan. You should see how strong the U-M alumni are in NYC. We even have two bars that show just Michigan football (Ohio St's alumn assoc shares their bar with MSU and Indiana)

All in all we are just as passionate as the Nutheads in this rivalry....you just may see more red in Ohio than Blue in Michigan.

I've been a college football fan ever since I can remember, and though the hype of rivalries come and go...there's something about Ohio St./Michigan that stands the test of time.

For pure spectacle...there is NO rivalry that matches Army/Navy PERIOD, but from a competition standpoint there is NO rivalry that compares to Ohio St./Michigan END OF DISCUSSION.

Being from the east coast with no true college football powerhouse, watching these games has always been a thrill. I was first exposed to the rivalry in '68 with an Ohio St. team that had Jack Tatum, Jim Stillwagon, Rex Kern, Mike Sensibaugh, among others, but it was always "Woody vs Bo", not to beliitle Earle Bruce, John Cooper, Jim Tressel, Lloyd Carr and Gary Moeller, but to watch these two stalk the sidelines was a sight to behold.

I guess for me, the glory years was in the mid 70's when the defenses ruled the series. Oh sure, Ohio St had Archie Griffin, and Michigan always had quarterbacks like Rick Leach and John Wangler, but it was how the game was played. One year in Ann Arbor, Mike Lantry missed not one, but two field goals (from long range) that would have given Michigan the win and a Rose Bowl berth. The following year Lantry hits a BIG kick, only to be outdone by four field goals by Tom Klaban.

Give me a 13-10 battle everytime, and I'll enjoy the game much more than a 42-38 glorified touch football game.

Growing up a huge buckeye fan in Lima, Oh and having the opportunity to live in both Ohio and Michigan I can honestly say that Ohio State fans are definitely more passionate about THE GAME than those up north. I am sure it has to do with the fact that Michigan has 3 rivalries whereas Ohio only has 1.
None-the-less the BIG HOUSE is definitely a quiet house most of the time. When I watch a game in that stadium I almost feel like it is uncool to get into and cheer during the game. I think now that Ohio State has won most of the games lately Michigan fans will now become more passionate when it comes to this special game like it used to be during the 10 year war. Can't wait till this year

From a previous post: "Michigan fans have way more class, knowledge and appreciation for the game than the OSU fans"

But of course, the fans are not the ones on the field. Go Buckeyes!

This is in regards to your Michigan/Ohio State game. On eBay you will find, " Rivalry " 2007 Michigan/Ohio State Traveling Trophy, it has a pic's of Bo and Woody, half of each stadium plus much more. This will be great for the game. You have to hurry though it's only on until Nov. 3rd good luck

having traveled to Columbus in 2006 & observed both the HBO crew filming for this documentary and the Rivalry in living "true color", Michigan fans have a long way to go if they are ever going to reach the depths of osu fans...
