This film was EXCELLENT! If possible, this needs to be shown again, outside of BLACK HISTORY MONTH. Joe Louis was an outstanding boxer, as well as a person. How can one speak SO negatively about this man? Times have changed somewhat since Mr. Louis was alive, but he did make a large contribution to the African-American race. Please give credit where the credit is due. How many more African-Americans were movers and shakers? It amazes me how people (from this forum) can easily make false judgments of others without knowing ALL the facts. How can one do so if they have NEVER walked in that person's shoes? If you are not of that race or sex, how do you really know what he or she daily experiences? The African-Americans are not the only minorities that have been and are continually ostricized. How can you make an opinion of a FAT WOMAN, if you have not worn the fat suit and personally experience how she was judged! This (Joe Louis American Hero... Betrayed) is not the only story in history of how African-Americans were not given credit for their accomplishments. I believe this is a good source of history that should be shown to many of our youth today... and not only to African-Americans! The schools and libraries are slowly taking away history regarding prejudice and mistreatment of the past. We can all learn from HISTORY! Keep up the good work, HBO. As far as being bias.... are not the sport commentators often bias? Past athletes going to court regarding steriods... all athletes should be treated the same. How often do you hear positive things on the news? Even the newspapers... is there any good news being done in the world? Next time you listen to your 6pm or 10pm newscast, check and see if there is any positive footage.

This was a program specifically shown by HBO during Black History Month to shed some light (if even a little) on Joe Louis. There were some parts that were unnecessary and blown out of proportion ( Bill and others), but overall I think many people were surprised to know Joe Louis had anything to do with the PGA or spent time overseas helping troops and donating his money. It should not surprise anyone that in those days he fell behind to the IRS, do you actually believe he had someone handling his affairs? Look at Redd Fox, Sammy Davis Jr. they both died broke and in IRS trouble also. Look at Wesley Snipes (just joking) As for Max Schmeling - this was particular program during the shortest month of the year, that so happens to be Black History Month was not about him. We can learn about his life later when Pepsi decides to sponsor a program on Boxing. Instead of researching all the bad things about the program commend HBO on showing programming that appeals to all and sometimes enlightens others. Don't be upset with the program - praise it's effort and be angry that Inside the NFL is off the Air!!

Several points: I, too, researched the ages of Charlie Rangel, Maya Angelou, Bill Cosby and others. The observation that they weren't even born or that they were so young they could not have remembered the events is correct! Hey, I guess I remember me and Abraham Lincoln strolling through the White House talking about The Civil War, too! If Joe Louis earned $450,00 per year, post-depression and later owed $1.5m in taxes, he must have never paid a nickel. How many underpriviledged of his own race would his taxes have covered had he paid them. Think about it... Just because he volunteered for the Army does not mean he is allowed to not pay taxes. Those are two different issues. The reverse would have been: Had he paid his taxes, he would have been not been forced to go to the Army. That would have been ridiculous, right? If he owed $1.5m in 1970, how much is that in todays dollars? My understanding is that the "betrayal" is that he was hounded...not that he actually was required to pay the $1.5m.

i did not think this a very good documentary. this was more of what people thought of joe, which most had no actual memory of him because most were to young or not alive. may be they were told what to say. i wanted to here what joe had to say about his life, current events, and his thoughts about his boxing opponents. i also wanted to know why his handlers did not protect him more from the irs. why did he not fight black heavyweights until the end of his reign. i did learn that james braddock received 10% of joe louis's purses for like ten years. i got to believe that there was more to the story. why did james braddock not fight for two years after winning the title. james was not financially comfortable to sit around for two years waiting to fight. this is very shady. james was rusty after not fight for two years of course he was going to lose. it was sad to see his life to turn out the way it did--drugs, mental illness and working as a greeter. i do not know why it was called betrayed. i believe if he did not have the irs problem he would still ended up with the same problems. max schmeling did not get a fair shake in this documentary. i did read that he did send money to joe louis to help him out and that "he personally saved the lives of two Jewish children by hiding them in his house. He also visited American P.O.W. camps and occasionally tried to help conditions for the prisoners." http://www.boxrec.com/media/index.php?title=Human:9041 if this true or not.... so this documentary is two stars out of five.

The film said Pres. Reagan intervened to allow Joe Louis to be buried in Arlington Cemetery. Why didn't any of the Presidents before that intervene to forgive his debt to the IRS? When did his tax problems come to light? Was it before 1952 when Truman was still in office, or in Eisenhower's 1953-1960 terms in office?

I'm starting to feel "Betrayed" by HBO - Bill Cosby was not even born at the time of the Louis/Max Baer fight! Maybe Cosby was asked about the all important Louis/Buddy Baer fights instead. Come on HBO an unborn Cosby & a 7 year old May Angelou and a 5 year old Charlie Rangel are the only people that can be found for comments on this fight. I am beyond disappointed in this level of so-called journalism to pass these 3 people on as actual commentators of the age when not a one was at the age of reason. mm
