Michigan vs. Ohio State: The Rivalry

Each year, the football programs at Ohio State and Michigan gear up with a common goal: to beat their archrival on the third weekend in November, no matter the rankings, no matter the score. Widely considered college football?s biggest rivalry, these two Big Ten powerhouses frequently dominate the standings, and attract game-day crowds that exceed 100,000 rabid followers.

Steeped in a rich tradition dating back to their inaugural meeting in 1897, this rivalry extends beyond the pursuit of a Big Ten title, and is renewed each year through the pageantry and colliding cultures that distinguish the two schools. Presented four days before the Ohio State Buckeyes take on the Michigan Wolverines at Ann Arbor, HBO Sports will present its first college football documentary, Michigan vs. Ohio State: The Rivalry, which debuts Tuesday, November 13 (10:30-11:30 PM ET/PT), exclusively on HBO.

HBO needs to put this out on DVD quick, so I can get it for my mom for Christmas. She went to OSU back in the late '60s, when Woody and Bo began battling it out. I grew up in Michigan a Wolverine fan, so my mom and I always had a fun, if often heated, but respectful rivalry in our house come Autumn. OSU has had it all over us the past few years, and I give Tressel his props, but I think the series will swing back in Michigan's favor soon...that seems to be the way these things go.

And anyways, Wolverine hockey is #1! Go Blue!!!

Does anyone know if the OSU/Michigan documentary will be for sale through the HBO store? I don't see it in there yet, nor is there any indication that it is forthcoming. Anyone know of other OSU documentaries for sale?

I am not a Michigan or OSU fan... I knew they were rivals, but I didn't realize what a big deal it was. I thought the documentary was excellent. I actually wished it was longer. I enjoyed learning the history of the two teams.

I am from Los Angeles, and UCLA/USC is nothing even close to this... even when I lived in Alabama, the Bama/Auburn rivalry was big, but Michigan/OSU is on a whole different level.

Good job, HBO! Looking forward to more sports documentaries!

I'm a '69 grad of OSU...we spanked the winged helmet team 50-14 than went on to take of OJ and USC. Every year the 3rd Saturday in November builds more and more tension. If you have not attended or graduated from either institution, you really can't fully appreciate what that game means. I thought HBO did a fine job of paying tribute to both universities, the faculty, students, coach's, players, and fans. Lloyd should have stayed so Vestman can make up for all of those Cooper years. How can one obtain a copy of the program? I want to keep showing it to my grand children. That way they will be able to better understand my actions on the 3rd Saturday of November in future years. "I don't give a damn about the whole state of Michigan, I'm from OHIO ! " Go Bucks!

I just sat through 'The Rivalry,' and I'm happy to say it actually achieved being more boring than watching ANY Big 10 football game, even um/osu. How did HBO think this was worthy of a documentary?

jfgibbs,
Trust me, I've lived in Ohio all my life and regardless of the fact that Ohio has two pro football teams, the fan base for the Ohio State Buckeyes is much larger. Of course there're people here in Ohio, who like there NFL, but the spirit and engery they have for that generally doesn't compare to the spirit they have for the buckeyes. You can not go anywhere in Ohio on a Saturday that the Buckeyes are playing without seeing a sea of scarlet and gray everywhere.

As for the whole we don't have to hate each other every single day of the year, your wrong. You would have to live here to understand, but it doesn't really matter if it's the peak of football season or the middle of the summer, when a Michigan fan is in signt you just krenge a little. Trust me Michigan fans are hated 350 days a yaer here.

But really much respect to the Aubern-Alabama rivalry, from what I here it is pretty intense.

GO BUCKS! O-H

While I am impressed with the intensity I've seen from both groups of fans, I feel obligated to say that HBO may have picked a college football rivalry that is not quite the most bitter or steeped in hatred.

If you were to ask someone from Ohio or Michigan who they root for, undoubtedly they would reply "Go Buckeyes", or "Go Blue." If you were to ask them who they root for on on any other day they may answer the Detroit Lions, Cleveland Browns, the Redwings, Pistons, or any other pro team that calls either Ohio or Michigan home. But if you were to take a trip to Alabama and ask anyone who they root for on any given day of the year there would be one of two answers...Auburn, or Alabama.

There is also the proximity factor to address. If a fan from Michigan makes the trip into enemy territory for the big game and his team loses, he would then make the trip back into friendly territory to lick his wounds. There is no such luck for either team in Alabama. Losers make attemps to avoid the winners remarks to no avail, they are unescapable.

Michigan and Ohio State may hate each other but they dont have to hate each other every single day of the year.

With 2:10 remaining, (you can hear it on your ABC tape), the crowd started the O-H-I-O cheer from all four sides of the Big Morgue. I was sitting on the "H" sideline, and couldn't believe it. It circled the stadium three or four times, gaining strength until the UM Losers finally started booing, and their mincing band kicked in. My UM host said, "Wow, never seen anything like that. They took over our stadium!!!"

Congratulations, Buckeye fans, you won, you played the better game, no doubt. Good luck in the Rose Bowl.

But really, Buckeye fans, isn't winning enough? A bad loser is bad(and there were many at the game on Saturday - I was there in the student section), but a bad winner is way worse. You represent your school poorly.
