Do gay men "get" Gabriel's mojo like straight women do?

First things first: This thread is not in any way meant to cast dispersions on anyone?s sexual orientation. I do not wish to discuss the pros and cons of gay vs straight.

Rather, I am more interested in the differences in sexual attraction as it applies to men vs women. I believe that men tend to focus on very different things than women when they are looking for a partner and I believe that difference can be discussed at length by focusing on Gabriel Byrne?s effect on gay men vs heterosexual women.

My Theory: The majority of gay men would respond well to the younger Gabriel Byrne, especially if they could see him sans shirt, preferably completely naked and if, the younger Gabriel Byrne were appropriately cut/pumped/chiseled and muscular. I believe that gay men, like heterosexual men, love youth and all its perfections. I believe men are extremely visual creatures and are stimulated more by what they see than what they imagine, and its likely that many gay men were fans of Gab in his younger days.

But I suspect that the majority of gay men would not share our hysteria over the 58 year old Gabriel Byrne/Paul Weston. I suspect they would not, could not ?get? this latter day Gab?s mojo.

I think for a myriad of reasons, discussed at length on many other threads, the Paul/Gabriel of today is a sexual dynamo to women almost exclusively. Most of us that have been struck by the sheer force of this man?s sensuality still can?t verbalize exactly why, but many of us think the older Gab far surpasses the younger, more aesthetically perfect one. As a matter of fact, a great deal of us agree that his physical imperfections only serve to intensify our feelings. His wrinkles, his crooked smile, his magnificently oversized nose combine to create a logic defying masterpiece; and we cant stop looking at it no matter how hard we try. The fact that we cannot explain this phenomenon, we cannot balance this equation, we cannot make the numbers add up, only serves to fan the flames of our imagination further and ultimately, it whips our affections into an ever increasing "perpetual motion" of breathless adoration.

In other words, it drives us wild that he drives us wild.

I know there will be exceptions to this rule. There will be a minority of gay men who feel about him the way we do and I also know there are plenty of girls out there who like Gab for his looks and his looks alone. But a great deal of us adore this man for the subtle delivery of a word, the squint of an eye, the gesture of a hand, beyond that, our imaginations run wild and concentrate on that which we cannot see. We love what we imagine Gabriel Bryne to be.

His secret is not overt, its not in-your-face, its not completely visual. For these reasons, I suspect many gay men would not fuly appreciate this man's mojo but am curious to know if any of you have heard different? Does the 58 year old Gabriel Byrne appeal to that audience?

Talk amongst yourselves.

I dont typically go for pot bellies, but Gab's is just another one of those typically unattractive features that attract me. Part of the mystery of the whole damn thing. I do like tall men. I love tall men. But he's tall enough, its not like he's short or anything. I love dark hair, his hair is...god its fantastic really. In his youth it was black as hell and thick as hell. Now it has a little salt and pepper, nothing at all wrong with that.

I love big noses. nuff said there. His nose is a work of art. I've said that plenty of times.

I dont know where I am going with this post. Its getting late on Friday night and I've had a lot of wine.

Hehehehe . . . look up the word Bears in a gay dictionary. Like straight people gay people have their own indiviudal physical preferences.

I personally go for older men with pot bellies and a little gray in their hair. I've never carried for muscle bound men, Brad Pitt types, tall men or short men. I like them about 5'11". Three guesses why I'm attracted to GB? People are individuals with indiviudal preferences whether they're gay or straight.

My experience has also been that the gay (male) friends I have had are plenty attracted to straight men but they are typically a certain type. Very cut, very buff, very perfect looking and on the young side.

Hmmm, that hasn't been my experience with lesbians. Your mileage may vary. Attraction is attraction whether the one you're attracted to is straight or gay. The whole gay vibe thing is a myth at best.

I would suspect that the majority of gay men, would not find a straight fellow such as Gabe sexually attractive at any age, because he doesn't give that sort of vibe, however on the other hand, there are probably those that find him generally attractive. I am straight women and can look at another gal and think, wow, she's pretty. know what i mean?

I've mentioned him to one or two gay friends and they didnt even know who he was.

Maybe they flock to Showtime more than HBO? Because if you get HBO and you see the show, well, then you are hooked right?

I think... imo, that there would be some gay men who would get hooked like we did.. but I think overall he would not appeal to gay men (like you said) ... and I worked for an airline for years and with more gay men than straight.. I can't say I know them all... but I have met my share.. lol.

Well we are having fun with a fantasy but I think alot of us here haven't experienced anything like this before. This level of preoccupation and obsession isnt really normal.
I wont repeat all of our pathetic stories, they aren't as funny if you arent experiencing the madness along with us.

The accent doesnt hurt its definately charming as fook. But, I think he could have a different accent and it wouldnt change a thing for me.

I'm not THAT obsessed by anyone. I just think the women here are having fun with a fantasy, I could be wrong.
Maybe It's the Irish in me and his accent that has that little bit of extra that adds to his appeal.
I have a good friend (straight),who came from Ireland a few yrs back and I defy anyone to not be attracted to him when he talks, well me anyway.

Why is Sean Connery still attractive to women, is it his accent?

Would GB be so attractive if he talked liked Joe Pesci ?
(no offense to Joe)

So Myles, does he make you burn your food and forget to feed your pets? Can men get like that?

Good point Touched,

as for me, hey I think he's plenty attractive at any age but if I was 20, would I think so? I can't go back 25 yrs and know the answer.
I'll look forward to other men responding to your well thought out question here.

Well, I thought of that. You are right, there may be a lot of contributers that I assume are women but they are not. In any event, in answer to your question, yes, its quite normal for women to continue to have crushes on male celebrities as they age but, I dont know, I often find that men arent that forgiving. Ok its a generalization but I it seems like you stop hearing great things about most female celebrities once they approach 50. Susan Sarandon is an exception although even then, I'm not sure I'm ready to say that a man that had a crush on her 30 years ago would still have one now.

But hey, I could be wrong.

Hmm, interesting question. I can appreciate your thoughts on the matter and don't think you are casting any dispersions but as you state in your theory "that many gay men were fans of Gab in his younger days."
Doesn't it stand to reason that as those gay men got older and matured along with GB, they still found him attractive all the same?
For instance, wouldn't a heterosexual man who found Susan Sarandon attractive 30 yrs ago still find her just as attractive today ( Bernard and Doris)?
I guess what I'm saying is that if you found someone attractive when you were young, don't you still see them as attractive today as you both have aged?
I don't know if everyone in these threads has declared themselves as women, so maybe men are here to some extent and you might not know it.
...everyone can hide behind a screen name and avatar and be anyone they want ;).
But it is interesting what you brought up.

I posted earlier that I have a gay friend who is 45. He was over one day and I played a few episodes of In Treatment for him. He thought GB was very handsome and remembered him from Stigmata. Some of his comments were that he loved GB's hair, the way he combs it forward and then up in the front. He also spoke about his eyes, remembering from movies how blue they are. It was weird because he loved all the same things about GB that I do.
He is anxiously awaiting the DVD.;)
