Meet the New Patients: Walter

A successful CEO who built a family-owned company from the ground up, Walter (played by John Mahoney) comes to see Paul at his wife's urging because he's been having trouble sleeping. He's in denial over several other deeper issues however, which come to the surface when his standard solutions to crises fail him.

Yes! When is the third season going to begin? I am about ready to give up my subscription. This is the only show I watch. I think this show is a public service. I would like in the third season to see Paul take on a psychopath, an alcoholic, an obsessional, a psychotic, maybe a group therapy could be added. Maybe add other professionals to the mix.

I sincerely hope HBO airs third season of "In Treatment." The writers and actors are amazing.

The demystification of therapy alone makes it a noble subject. Some people have to be in a straight jacket before they break down and ask for help with problems. I.T. shows real people struggling to deal with very distinctive and sometimes crippling issues. Paul's ability to empathize and maintain professional objectivity gives us a window into "what a good therapist should be."

HBO has the best lineup on television and I.T. is definitely the jewel in the crown. Viva La I.T.!

I agree that this show in both seasons was brilliantly conceived and executed. Its quality drama. But as I was saying under the "News of In treatment "thread, and as Petersen13 says, the dynamics definitely change in that last week and Im not sure they can use the rooms in the same way.

It was startling and innovative to see the inside of characters reflected in the outside of the room...the objects, the lighting (mmmm!), the use of colour and music etc. How can they go further outside without losing the inside? Thats the dilemma.

If the drama follows Paul doesnt it have to go outside, beyond the room. How does he take that mentality into everyday life without losing its concentration?

Theres certainly enough for a third season in that!

I am concerned as the Fall approaches with nothing official being said about a 3rd season of In Treatment. Paul finally started recognizing his feelings rather than remaining an observer. He needs to now find a life for himself both with and beyond his patients' lives. The series is not ready to end -- and to do so would leave things undone and unfinished. The excellent writers can and should pull this off. I looked forward to every episode. I personally dd not like the "clumping" of several episodes in two nights and was forced to DVR Monday nights because of my one other favorite -- Dancing with the Stars (which needed to be viewed immediately). I preferred one client a night. But I'll take season 3 in any form it is presented. I hope that HBO recognizes its loyal fan base. Without In Treatment I personally have no reason to retain HBO -- even though there are other great shows, but none as compelling as In Treatment ( now that Six Feet Under is gone).

I would be so disappointed if there wasn't another season. I have become caught up with these people's lives, with Paul's life. I am not ready to let go yet.

Yes. Plus they have American playwrights in place now but they still have Hagai Levi, the creator, as an executive producer....so theres an opportunity for original collaboration, even without a season 3 in Israel. Working together at conception could bring out whole new angles into the culture of modern lifestyle in New York.Season 1 was quite critical of the therapeutic process, season 2 introduced a wry sense of humour characteristic of that city.Season 3 could do so much more if it gets the chance. This sense of two person dialogue is addictive.

At least. It is the one intelligent series on American TV. We should form an action group - petitions, sit-ins on Sixth Avenue, riots, etc.

I cannot imagine this being the last season either. There is still too much with Paul himself that is unresolved. There has to be another season!

Is this really the last of In Treatment? I felt it was after the last episode - especially with him releasing Gina, two patients left and two want to continue. I get the feeling it is over. Two seasons is not enough - although I did read somewhere how much of a toll it took on Gabriel Byrne to do the show. But, now I feel as if I need a therapist to get over my separation anxiety :"

Hi, I am a newbie that watched the 2nd season of In Treatment. Didn't have HBO for the first season so I have ordered it especially after the Sophie comment last night and yes the references to Alex, etc.
My favorite this season was April with Oliver coming in a close second.
I agreed with April's reasons for leaving. She looked so sweet in the hat that Paul gave her. You get so wrapped up in these people and consequently it is difficult to say good bye to them.
I hope there is a Season 3 and one of the patients will mention April and how she is doing.
Poor Oliver he will have a tough road to hoe. Just hope that he will fall in love with Upstate New York.

I think the fact that he had been resisting for so long made it more believeable when he did seem to have a breathrough? I never heard of therapy being easy, it's hard to accept truths about yourself that you aren't ready to accept. Paul called him out on his truths and he finally saw them.

Great post. He definitely was stripped naked, emotionally. He had no defense mechanisms left. Did you notice Walter still took some jabs at Paul, almost blaming him for stripping him of all his defense mechanisms leaving him helpless.
Walter will be a handful for Paul because he fights him every step of the way. When Paul brought up Connie's rehab he went ballistic, it was only chardonnay and some pills! What? I wanted to jump thru the television and shake the crap out Walter at times. Then he said he teared up in one of the session...what? You grabbed onto Paul's leg and sobbed uncontrollably!

I know Walter probably drains Paul when his sessions are over with.

I'll miss this character. I would've loved to see and hear what Connie had to say.

Yes definitely......much too fast...and why did Mia's father suddenly change overnite? I thought he adored her.........

He adored her when she was adoring him. This was the first time she questioned him and put him on the defensive, and she immediately discovered that his love was conditional.
