Hi, all: Now that the first season of In Treatment is over and hopefully a second season will be shown, I'm asking you to take a hard look at the In Treatment TV series and forum, and suggest future directions that you think may be necessary. For example: Should Paul use different concepts and applications of psychology and psychotherapy, and should these be discussed on the forum? Should Paul's patients include a celebrity and a reformer, e.g., an attorney who defends the little guys on the bottom rung of society? Should the forum offer criticism of IT , Paul and GB as well as praise? NOTE: This thread replaces a previous version. I'm asking all to focus on the future of the IT TV series and forum. Thanks. OK. Guys. Since no one posted on this thread, I?m leaving the IT forum. Sorry I caused grief to anyone. Recently I took a brain MRI, and my internist said I had mini-strokes related to uncontrolled diabetes. Anyway thanks to insulin adjustment, it?s in control now. Good luck & God bless.

ADDENDUM: This thread will allow you to explore the concepts and applications of psychology, psychoanalysis, psychotherapy and related fields from a practical standpoint. For those interested in the romantic and sexuaL aspects of the In Treatment (IT) TV series, I suggest you visit various other threads in the IT forum I no longer visit them because I found that I?m interested only in the clinical and biological aspects of psychotherapy. Since the patient's mental or emotional problem, personality and life style determine the treatment used, we'll explore various different theories and methods including those which are new, old and under investigation. I assure you that participating in this thread will be exciting & enlightening. Welcome on board. -- Edited by sciwriter at 05/06/2008 7:51 PM PDT

What treatment regime would Paul use for a suicidal patient who is the head of a prostitution ring and resembles The DC Madam? Why did the D.C. Madam address her mother and sister but not her father in the suicide note (see below)? http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080506/ap_on_re_us/escort_list_11 The woman known as the DC. Madam apologized to her mother and sister in suicide notes, saying she couldn't bear going to prison and saw killing herself as the only exit strategy. Deborah Jeane Palfrey, convicted last month of running an elite Washington prostitution ring, wrote to her mother that she could not "live the next 6-8 years behind bars for what you and I have come to regard as this 'modern day lynching,' only to come out of prison in my late '50s a broken, penniless and very much alone woman. -- -- Edited by sciwriter at 05/06/2008 7:48 PM PDT

Let'sl start the discussions with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) also known as Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD) as follows: We know that the disorder usually determines the treatment method used. Simply stated, in DID, two or more persontalities take control of the patient's psyche and behavior (see be;ow). Paul would use talk therapy and perhaps autosuggestion (hypnosis) to integrate the patient's personality into one cohesive whole: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiple_personality_disorder Dissociative Identity Disorder, as defined by the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), is a psychiatric diagnosis that describes a condition in which a single person displays multiple distinct identities or personalities, each with its own pattern of perceiving and interacting with the environment. The diagnosis requires that at least two personalities routinely take control of the individual's behavior with an associated memory loss that goes beyond normal forgetfulness; in addition, symptoms cannot be due to substance abuse or medical condition. Earlier versions of the DSM named the condition multiple personality disorder (MPD) and the term is still used by the ICD-10. The condition is controversial regarding its existence, possible causes, appearance across cultures, and epidemiology& What do you think? -- Edited by sciwriter at 05/07/2008 10:57 AM PDT
