Blog About Possible Season 3

Here is a blog from UK about interview with Hagai Levi and possible ideas for season 3 if HBO gives green light.
Mr Levi's concept is interesting but sounds like one that would take Paul out of the mix, at least on a regular basis.

If this happened would you still watch?

Posted on 25 June, 2009 by Jonathan Melville

Little known here in the UK but huge over in America, HBO?s half-hour drama In Treatment is starting to get a bit of a reputation as the next ?must-watch? show. This week I spoke to series creator Hagai Levi at the 2009 Edinburgh International Film Festival and he dropped hints about the mooted third season.

Each episode of In Treatment focuses on one psychotherapy session held by Dr Paul Weston (Gabriel Byrne). The series is stripped over a week, with Monday following one patient?s treatment, Tuesday another patient and so on through the days until Friday?s episode covers Weston?s own visits to his therapist to discuss the traumas of his week.

The next week we go back to Monday?s patient on the first day of the week and the cycle repeats itself.

If it sounds confusing then it isn?t, though it does offer a new take on TV drama and demands a loyalty from viewers perhaps more used to dipping their toe into a drama and returning for the odd hit.

In Treatment began life in Israel when creator Hagai Levi decided he wanted to make a drama with a bit more intelligence for him and his friends to enjoy. Psychotherapy doesn?t have the same stigma as it does elsewhere in the world and Levi feels the sessions are a way of life for him now.

While I?ve only seen the first five episodes of season one, I?ve now managed to get a hold of the boxset and plan to devour them during July. I?ll also be running my full interview with Levi very soon, though I thought I?d mention now his thoughts for the possible third season which HBO are due to decide upon ?any day now?.

Rather than focus on a handful of patients each season, as has happened up till now, Levi is tempted to play with the format.

?I didn?t make a third season in Israel and thought I?d had enough of the subject. But now, a year on, I have an idea for a third season that would be more of a spin-off,? says Levi. ?It would follow one patient through his whole life. I?ll know any day now if the studio want to make it.?

So there you go, not content with just following the same path over multiple seasons, Levi wants to keep challenging himself and his viewers. There was no mention whether Byrne would remain a part of the cast, but here?s hoping he at least gets a few cameos as it progresses.

I just contacted HBO Corporate under Contact HBO, General Information, and just asked them if it's true that GB just signed on for a season 3, as has been 'reported' on Twitter. Maybe if we all barraged them with emails, they'd give us some info.

"[HBO] They're trying to put together a season 3 for "In Treatment." Gabriel Byrne is willing but scripts have to be created (previous seasons were based on an Israeli show.)"

my understanding is that he is based in Israel, but that he was spending time in Los Angeles, perhaps in negotiation with HBO there. He has commented in articles about experiencing LA. as a writer.

Since his show doesnt seem to be reaching into a season 3 in Israel it could be he is "relocating" with it..temporarily?Wasnt Gabriel Byrne seen in LA recently too?Who would have presidence;Levi or Byrne? And where does that put Warren Leight who was showrunner last year, or Rodrigo Garcia?Do they all work as a team?

Is Mr. Levi based in the United States?

That might be a logical progression since they are now writing for an american audience, and since last season was American playwrights writing adaptations, not straight translations....however there may be a question of intellectual property and Hagai levi might be interesting in taking back the helm....according to this blog anyway. This show is his creation and he must have some say in it.

I'm assuming the original series was not written in English. It might be better to continue with writers who can write directly in English, people like Sarah Treem, perhaps.

If the only hang up is that no storylines were written for Israeli Season 3, has HBO considered the obvious? To hire the Israeli writers who wrote seasons 1 & 2?

The news is somewhat hopeful for In Treatment 3.

* Season 3 of ?In Treatment? is something they?re trying to put together, but given that the show was adapted from an Israeli series that only ran for two seasons, they?d have to create all-new scripts for a third season. Still, it?s a good sign that Gabriel Byrne is ?very interested? in returning.

It doesnt look good for a season 3 with Leight committed elsewhere and Hagai Levi talking about a completely different format, something that sounds more conventional and makes me think of Woody Allen rather than this innovative format of In Treatment that has proved so compelling. Also Its been reported that Gabriel Byrne is in a deal to do a film , The Ice Prince. Thats ominous.

Its the In Treatment format that is interesting.Im not really interested in the role of therapy in peoples lives, the Woody Allen thing. Its too exclusive.Im interested in the two person dialogue in a room, these little daubs of impressionist portraits of different people for one moment in their lives.Just moments, nothing definite or epic, but traces of how we exist together.

Yes,Criminal Intent is a mess.Sometimes, like with that show, they dont know when to stop, and sometimes,as with In Treatment, they may stop too soon!

Yeah, I read this article about Warren Leight while out in California. NOT good news. However, if RG comes back on board, PLUS Paris, I think there's a possibility that Season 3 would be a "go."

Of course, if Gabriel doesn't WANT to do Season 3, then "IT" should cease to exist. NO GB - NO IT.

"Law and Order: Criminal Intent" is still managing to stagger along, rather pitifully, since Leight left as show runner. But the show has suffered terribly. I only bother to watch the D'Onofrio episodes, and even they are failing to engage me like they used to.

I don't think this looks good for season 3. HBO made it pretty clear last year that the reason they went with season 2 is because Warren Leight was at the helm. With him leaving IT, I bet HBO will pull the plug.

Maybe Rodrigo Garcia will pick up the reins again and HBO will keep going. There were mentions that GB was spotted with RG while in LA earlier this month.

We can only hope!

Gabriel Byrne has to have a BIG role in In Treatment 3 as in the other IT series. If not I will be very disappointed, sad and furious.

If he will not be in IT3 at all, I will not see that series. :(

But In Treatment is Gabriel Byrne. I guess HBO understand that!

yes, the room is constantly shifting significance according to the characters within it. The lighting effects are also extraordinary, at times luminous. Everything external corresponds to internal states so that the psyche is almost externalised. But its all in understatement,no hyperbole.Thats beautiful and restrained, such a different aesthetics from anything else on TV.

Check out the magic carpets Paul and Gina sit on to be transported through the various worlds, the Persian/Indian rugs in warm enveloping colours;so evocative. They travel on their magic carpets!

I heard Gabriel Byrne signed up to do a film of The Ice Prince.I hope this doesnt affect him doing another season of In Treatment.Maybe he can manage both.Im sure this show is emotionally draining but I think thats part of its achievement too, that its so demanding on everyone. That pain is part of it perhaps, and without it it wouldnt be the same show.It would be like any other show. Its that level of commitment and intensity that drives it, and sometimes the difficult thing is the thing you have to do.No escape! (and no escape from all my editing either!)
