I believe reports had her age at 76 years old. She was highly respected by my grade school teachers and I appreciate that she taught us about her, her music, and apartheid in South Africa.

It's one thing to experience segregation in the land of your oppression where one is in the minority in terms of population. It's an even greater horror to experience apartheid in one's own indigenous homeland where one is in the majority. Makeba and Mandela kept up the clarion call for an end to apartheid and for sanctions from the US. It ultimately worked....Mandela celebrated a star-studded 90th birthday recently. Oh my....

Thanks, ladies, for the updates on MM. I DO remember her - a great human being with a magnificent voice. Gosh - how old was she (I thought she was old when I was a little kid!).

I was a little girl, Bertie, but I do remember Miriam Makeba very well and how she was banned in South Africa. Our elementary school teachers made up dances for us to do to her music and had us to study more about her life. My Mom has some of her records, too. Wonderful artist...I was saddened to learn of her collapse today in Italy. She will be dearly missed.

This really doesn't belong here, but for those of you who were fans of Miriam Makeba (spelling?) I just heard the awful news that she died, collapsed on stage in Italy after a performance. Remember when she was banned from South Africa for 30 years/ oh no, wait a minute, none of you folks are as old as I am, how could you know? Rudy had her records, yes I say records, not tapes or discs, RECORDS. You guys won't remember those either. Rudy once had the good luck to see her perform in person. What a voice. Bertie, sad.

Yeah, I know. As I said earlier, I just altered the text a little.

Such a beautiful quote. :)

Oh Lordie, did you hear about their first meeting? It's in Obamas book. After they shook hands, Bush turned to an assistant standing by and offered Barack some Purell.....saying, this is great stuff.

What an asshole

Big kudos, Bertie, for the tribute to Mayor Washington. I too remember him and thought it was wonderful when he was elected Mayor of Chicago. I hadn't realized (or had forgotten) that he had passed away - I wish he could have lived to see the election of Barack Obama to the Presidency.

Just a "heads up" that our President-elect is meeting with President Bush today at the WH. I can't WAIT to tune into MSNBC this evening for the reports.

Thanks for the background information on Harold Washington, Bertie. I learn something new every day.

There's an interesting and enjoyable article I came across in the Guardian (UK) called "The Obama Story." Its in 3-parts, but worth the read. Part 1 contains a lot information about his formative years, much of which has been written about already, but Parts 2 & 3 delve more into his psyche, his persona and what has made him such a disciplined and dedicated politician and human being:

Thank you, Bertie, for the tribute to the late Harold Washington. We felt his impact in Los Angeles because he often came to LA to meet with our former mayor, the late Tom Bradley.

Oh yes, so many of these young lions are the legacy of Harold Washington. Thanks again, Bertie. Bravo!!

Actually, I didn't make up the whole thing - just took an old saying and included Obama in it. =D

P.S.
LL, you're most welcome to share it.

Having lived in Chicago or the suburbs my entire life, I have to tell you all this place is one of a kind. Today, Mayor Daley, in response to a French reporter's question to him "How do you feel about Chicago being the center of the world right now?" and Mayor Daley replied "Hasn't it always been?!!"

President elect Obama is going to have a news conference here at 1:30 p.m. our time. Now, I want to bring up someone else to remember. Please never forget Harold Washington, the first African American mayor of Chicago. He was elected after Jane Byrne (no, I have no idea if Jane is related to Gabriel!!).

Without Harold Washington setting a fine example of government, advancing the cause of minorities, and surviving what is known in these parts as Council Wars, Barack Obama would not be able to be where he is today. Harold Washington served in the 1980's, and believe me, made many advances. Carol Moseley Braun got her start with Harold Washington, becoming the Recorder of Deeds. (working with real estate attorneys during that time, I will be forever grateful to her for abolishing the Torrens System here in Illinois - a tedious method of recording mortgages, etc.)

If you could have known my Rudy, he was such a political animal, he watched the Council Wars avidly, watching as Harold Washington made several inroads against the old Democratic machine, which wasn't easy. After all, that Democratic machine was responsible for the phrase in Cook County "Vote early, vote often!!" . Cheers would be heard from the TV room, as Rudy watched all the news he could. (side note: right now, one of those folks battling Harold Washington, Ed Vydrolyak (spelling?) has recently been indicted on kick back charges from a real estate mess, all these years later!)

Unfortunately, Harold Washington did not finish his term; he died of a heart attack while still in office. However, the City built a new, beautiful library some years ago in his name. The old library is now a cultural center on Michigan Avenue; the new library, named, of course, for Harold Washington, is four floors of wonderful things.
They even have a restaurant/banquet hall on the top floor used for government functions or by private parties. Please visit it if you come to Chicago!

Thank you for reading. - Bertie
