Several contributers to these threads have been thinking about how we can express our respect, admiration and [fill in your own deeply felt emotion] for Gabriel Byrne. One idea that was tossed around is to make a contribution to one of the the causes or organizations Gabe himself feels passionate about. We could contact the organization of choice to see how we could go about making a contribution, not as individuals, but as the community that we have become through these threads and everything they have meant to us lurkers and posters alike over these past several months. It would be a cool way to honor our man. I will post my ideas and the information I've gathered, and I hope others will do the same. If there seems to be ia real interest in this idea, we can strategize about the steps we need to take to identify and choose a cause/organization and start the ball rolling. At this point, two possibilities are: the Irish Arts Center in NYC and a new hospice program/movement in Ireland for which Gabe spoke so elequently advocated a few months ago. I found the website of the organizations, and they are seeking contributions as well as govenment funding. The only other cause I found he has recently been attached to is Amnesty International. A few years ago, he teamed up with Yoko Ono to help develop a music video in which children from the world's war-torn regions sing John Lennon's song, "Imagine." If anyone knows of any other causes that Gabe has championed, please post them and I can do some more research on them. This link gets you to the Irish Hospice Foundation http://www.hospice-foundation.ie/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=239&Itemid=11 This link is to the Irish Arts Center http://www.artmeetscommerce.net/irishartcenter/ -- Edited by lauriejoan at 09/02/2008 5:32 PM PDT

Thanks for weighing in, Jen. I like the UNICEF/Swaziland idea as well. We are still trying to see if we can learn if there are other pet projects that Gabe has been involved with recently so we can be sure that we have made as exhaustive a search as possible. I hope to have this part done by next Friday, when I leave for a two week vacation in Maine. Then we can somehow decide which organization to go with - maybe through somkind of volte (did I see some sort of voting mechanism on this HBO board -- or was it another board-- it all blurs together after a while). The next step will be to contact that organization and establish a 'fund' for those individuals who want to contribute. That way, the donations will add up to a single amount. -- Edited by lauriejoan at 09/05/2008 7:15 AM PDT

Thanks, Windhover. I remember seeing an article about this now, and about his photo exhibit-- but I forgot all about it. I'll add UNICEF-Swaziland to the pot of possibilities.

lauriejoans' original post said: > If anyone knows of any other causes that Gabe has championed, please post them and I can do some more research on them. Here is a link to an RTE News audio interview with GB in November 2004 about his appointment as a UNICEF ambassador "working in the area of AIDS awareness": http://www.rte.ie/news/2004/1130/57live_av.html?1920722,null,209 As he explains in the interview, this came out his experiences while shooting "Wah-Wah" on location in Swaziland. An exhibit of his photographs from Swaziland was mounted at the Glucksman Ireland House at NYU, with all sale proceeds going to UNICEF. http://irelandhouse.fas.nyu.edu/object/Byrne.exhibit.html Footnote: An article last week in Reuters noted that two-thirds of the people in Swaziland live in poverty and about 40 percent of adults live with HIV.

I like the idea of the random acts of kindness... With no expectations or strings. Just here and there for the sweet fun of it.
