"deeper level"?
Elemental, you mean?
Yes i see that too,or maybe its because Im reading Henning Mankell at the moment and he's an elementalist!

Probably this sense of something deeper is enhanced by the fact the writers never emphasize their sessions as "money transaction".I dont think money is mentioned between them where as it is in Pauls other sessions. You never feel Paul is paying her and she is setting a cost.

The theme for this thread asks; Is Gina in love with Paul?

Now I have seen IT1 and IT2.
I think it is impossible to answer that question. So I think the writers of IT just want us to wonder about that. So sometimes they write in something that make us think she loves him, and sometimes they write in the quite opposite.
My own feelings about it is that she really cares about Paul on a deeper level. Maybe because he was her favorite student. And she had to notice that he is an attractive man too.

It would be great if someone could write a In Treatment play to be performed on the stage, and then could put in on stage in Broadway or in Dublin.

I don't know by what means networks are able to count what they call "aftermarket" data, which is TiVo and DVR activity. I saw Charlie Rose interview a network hotshot who indicated that they had not yet perfected anything to capture those numbers, so they just make estimates. Sounds like it's still not too exact a science.

If HBO would put out a DVD with great extras, IT could potentially be a juggernaut on DVD. Apparently, THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION gained a whole new life on DVD and has now been adapted for the stage set to open in Dublin with several sold-out shows. Why not, In Treatment?

I guess that HBO can only really 'count' the number of viewers they KNOW are watching it via HBO itself, and not necessarily the wider audience world wide. Which is a shame.

Hey, for a show with such small viewing numbers, In Treatment certainly gets alot of posts on this site!

I know, isn't it great!

Season 1 has hit Europe and will be seen in the UK in October, so these threads (to our delight) are definitely aquiring some European viewers.

There are so many reviews out there, just masses of them, and all good! So I think that many more people have watched this than is officially noted by HBO. People have it on Tivo, HBO on Demand, the DVD, and by other methods perhaps.

I believe there is just too much info and hype out there for only a million plus viewers to have seen it.

Do you think those are headache pills that Gina keeps in her desk drawer with the keys and Pauls letter?
She looks like she would need them after a session with Paul, dont you think?

Now, let's hope that the IT2 DVD is packed with great extras. Maybe THAT'S the reason Gabe was traipsing around LA...he had to film the DVD extras!! Yeah, that'll work, huh?

I don't think Gina is in love with Paul....she went out on a date on the season finale....I think she's gonna get hugged up with that character. Wouldn't it be great if she wound up on Paul's brownstone steps, rain-soaked hair, mascara streaked, needing to talk about her new love interest? Hmmmmm, we may not have seen the last of Gina after all.

HBO Signature has been rerunning Season 2 on Sunday evenings in a five-show block (all episodes for the week). HBO Signature East runs them starting at 6:30pm. HBO Signature West starts at 9:30pm. July 5 is Week 5.

(I could kick myself for forgetting about the Sunday reruns. It's just luck I checked locatetv.com to see what movies were coming up, and IT was listed under TV.)

Love is bigger than any rules and who knows... love could bloom in a therapists' office. She fell big for Charlie but it that was not who she wanted to be? She had a rogue husband but now she is free and so is Paul? Paul refers to "we" which I contend is a euphemism for "I" was so in love with you.
Paul doesn't seem to know what he wants but in any event there is a definite history there which may yet to be played out?

I can't believe it, IT was supposed to go through 6/22 on On Demand. It's gone and I do not have tivo!? Now what?

Very interesting post Paxson, thanks! It would be interesting to explore their relationship, but it would take incredibly talented writers to do the complexity of their relationship justice.

I keep hearing Gina saying "Love is bigger than rules" , like a mantra for both seasons. We think we have it all sorted, then Love turns it upside down. Thats so exhilerating, however painful. Its Alive. You never know where its going..and those combative arguments are part of it.

There is something special about this relationship between Paul and Gina, different from the others because the power structures are different.Ive never been interested in the psychotherapeutic angle, and maybe thats good because if In Treatment wants a wider audience it has to appeal beyond its profession.

However I am interested in exploring human relationships, and this one fascinates because its the most complex of all as it expands and contracts. It challenges my assumptions about male/female relationships, broadens it, deepens it.

Gina and Paul may not have babies together, but they have a real life force going on...its generative, potent. Their relationship is about being lovers, though they may never have sex. They have to have a season 3 to explore all this...I dont think its been done before in any depth.... well,DHLawrence attempted it in his novels and in his own life....Anyone read "Sons and Lovers"? My brother wept when he read that at 18. It says something when an 18year old boy weeps....

God, you guys!!! Just when I think I'm off of the Gina/Paul bandwagon, I read something like what you've all posted and I'm dragged back in!! I thought I had it all figured out, and that it was only a Mother/Son relationship, but I may have to go back to my original idea.........of Paul/Gina love.....

I remember thinking it last season, but I can't remember exactly where, or why the thought crossed my mind. I remember mentioning it at one time, to many gags and 'EWWWW's'.......but I just couldn't shake the feeling that there was way more there than just 'old friends'........

Now, this season.....it crossed my mind at least once per Gina episode. I felt it way more strongly on Gina's side of the equation though.....

I watched Gina/7 last night again......and I paid particular attention to Paul's dialogue when speaking about seeing her with David....and how her students were all infatuated by her. In every instance, he says...WE....as a group........never, I......

However, when he says to Gina that she was brilliant, or something like that......and she says...."You argued with everything I ever said."....I think she was speaking directly about Paul.....not all of the students.....he was her favourite......

All I can say, is they pulled it off.....whatever they were going for in their episodes, it worked. It just left enough confusion for us to discuss!!
