Hey, KHW!
Yes, that was Ruby who posted about KFC - but being a Kentuckian myself, I have to admit that I don't eat there (and haven't for YEARS!). Awhile back, my dad went there for dinner, and ended up in the hospital (from food poisoning and severe dehydration!). It was traced back to his meal at the KFC restaurant (and I've also had friends end up in the hospital from eating at Pizza Huts - another franchise owned by the same people). There's a website called "KFC MADE ME SICK!," and I tried to get my dad to pursue it, but he didn't want to bother. (Plus we're well aware of the chicken "situation" here - it's VERY bothersome!).

BUT they're one of the FEW major corporate businesses in this town any longer and a TON of people would be out of jobs if they moved their corporate HQ (that's not condoning it - I'm just stating a fact, gals - sorry!).

The memorial service for "Belle" was lovely - her ashes are buried in a very quiet and pretty garden next to the Kentucky Derby Museum (and near where Barbaro's ashes will be buried in May). She was such a beautiful filly - with a heart as big as gold.

I had friends (and relatives) there that day at the Derby (in the sky boxes) who didn't see what happened - they had turned from the track right after Big Brown passed the finish line and were going to the windows to cash in their tickets. After they cashed their tickets, they went back out to watch the other race (there's one more after the Derby) when they saw the ambulance (and the HORRIBLE blue curtain that they put up!) on the track. It was then they found out that the filly had gone down.

I was at home watching TV - the network reporter (on horseback) was trotting along side Big Brown when BB sort of "freaked out" - evidently, Belle had JUST gone down near him (it was in the backstretch I think, off the first turn). The commentator made some snide comment like, "Oh, our Derby winner almost threw his rider! How about that?" THEN I saw the ambulance roaring down the track in the opposite direction and KNEW something was HORRIBLY wrong. It was shortly after that they announced that Belle had broken BOTH of her front legs (and, of course, couldn't be saved).

Did you know that they had to put her down BEFORE her trainer and owner got to her? At first, I thought that was HORRIBLE - Larry Jones (her trainer) realized something had happened when he saw her jockey walking towards him in tears, and the owner was told she was "gone" as he was walking back to her barn. However, I was told that there was absolutely nothing that could be done for her (the bones had shattered and went through her skin - which DIDN'T happen with Barbaro), and that she was in excruciating pain. The track vets got to her as quickly as they could and put her down humanely.

Larry Jones is currently working with a filly who is as good as - if not better - than Belle was. She's got the same coloring and is a real beauty. I hope he runs her in the Oakes, rather than the Derby, for the shear fact that I think Belle got bumped a LOT by the "big boys" during the Derby, that it's a longer race than the Oakes, and she was really PUSHING herself. That's NOT to say Larry did ANYTHING wrong in her training - these horses are born to run - and for speed - and Larry adores them (he personally rides them during their workouts). She just had a BIG heart and wanted to be the best.

jtomp.,

NYC is home to many, many, many Irish pubs...turn the corner and you'll find one there! GB's place was more upscale and trendy. I, too, was disappointed it didn't make it, because I thought the food and cosmos were quite good!

WOW! Having read your thread on KFC ( or was that you Ruby?) I may NEVER eat that stuff again!! That really grossed-me-out!

How cool that you were at the memorial for Eight Belles. My son and his girlfriend attended the Derby last year and saw the fall, firsthand. Had I been there, and saw it, I would've been heartbroken. It probably would've affected my entire weekend.

ruby,

I appreciated your input on what you've seen with the horses in NYC. I never paid too much attention to any type of abuse, but you've obviously seen more than I have while I was there. It that's the case, it's a damn shame. I adore horses and would hate to see them abused in any way.

Love all of you, gals! We just agree to disagree, okay? ;)

Now let's discuss something regarding In Treatment, um? How about that guy who stars in that show - Gabriel Byrne, isn't it? ;)

Not going to get in a fist-fight over this one - just let's say that what happened to David Novak and PETA goes beyond the pale - plus they followed his kids to school and harrassed them - as well as picketing outside of the family's church. Just "one" of their tactics.

Our city's kennel club has been fighting a PETA-inspired "animal control" ordinance for months now. You DO need to read some of their literature - the HSUS founder admitted that they eventually wanted to "return all the animals to the wild."

ARGH, I was in such an epic argument with this horse carriage dude on this LiveJournal gossip community (Oh No They Didn't!) last week because he kept insisting that ALL horses are treated well, blah blah blah. I never said that they weren't treated nicely, but I'm sure not all of them are happy. I've been to NYC like ONE time in my life, and I already saw a few horses who looked beat to hell.

I love both Liam and Alec, but I'm going with Alec on this one. (Obviously, this isn't a matter of whose-side-are-you-on purely based on the celebs.)

I'm sorry Pert, I have to disagree with you.......yes PETA is frequently over the top, but sometimes you need someone like that to get things done. And it''s not that they don't want people to have pets, they want animals to be treated well.

I've seen the way the horses are treated and it is not all good......they frequently dont have enough water to drink, especially on hot days....the drivers rarely act as if they care about the poor things and from what I hear (from a cop who owns his horse he uses in the city) they are left alone constantly, not well groomed, etc.

Alec may be an asshole, but his heart is in the right place.....he's not the only one concerned about those horses, they deserve a better life.

It's a sore spot with me, I feel awful for them as they trot them out on a 98 degree day with high humidity or it's 5 degrees. Some of the horses look gaunt.

And don't get me started about what they did to the CEO of Yum! (Kentucky Fried Chicken) whose corporation HQ are here in - where else - Kentucky (including hounding the guy's KIDS!).

KFC suppliers cram birds into huge waste-filled factories, breed and drug them to grow so large that they can?t even walk, and often break their wings and legs. At slaughter, the birds? throats are slit and they are dropped into tanks of scalding-hot water?often while they are still conscious. It would be illegal for KFC to abuse dogs, cats, pigs, or cows in these ways.

KFC?s own animal welfare advisors have asked the company to take steps to eliminate these abuses, but KFC refuses to do so. Many advisors have now resigned in frustration.

Please join Pamela Anderson, Sir Paul McCartney, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, The Rev. Al Sharpton, and countless other kind people worldwide by not eating at KFC.

But this of course, is disgusting and totally uncalled for...

On May 7, Cheryl Bachelder, president of Kentucky Fried Chicken, crawled to the ... a PETA activist poured fake blood over David Novak, the CEO of Yum! ...

I just want to put in my 2 cents on Liam Neeson. I think he is incredibly sexy. I'm sorry I didn't realize he was on Jon Stewart. I was doubly jealous of the women who went to the Irish gala in October. Not only did they meet Gabriel but also met Liam.

I was watching Laura Linney on Inside the Actors Studio a couple of weeks ago. Did you know that not only has she played Gabriel Byrne's wife in 3 movies, but she also played Liam Neeson's wife in 3 movies too?
The lucky biatch...playing the wife of 2 sexy Irishmen a total of 6 times. Geez!

(BTW, I was a little disappointed that they didn't talk about any of the movies she did with GB...I thought they would at least discuss Jindabyne. I would have been curious to hear her thoughts on working with him).

Hey, LL & KHW -
Thanks, KHW, for mentioning Liam's "dish-washing" duties in GB's book. It was SO cute how GB remembered it - he and Liam had been sitting out on the patio of GB and EB's California home, when LN excused himself (I guess to go to the WC). Anyway, when he didn't come back after awhile, GB wondered where he went, then EB comes out, puts her finger to her lips (like "be quiet") and there's Liam whistling away and washing the dishes! TOO cute!

Sorry, gals, but I'm going to take the Irishman's side on this "horse" issue. Alec Baldwin is a BIG PETA/HSUS supporter, and don't get me started on those "animal rights" groups (basically, they don't want people HAVING animals as pets - or anything else). Since Liam grew up in the beautiful, rolling fields of Ireland - with numerous horses, I'm sure he certainly knows if the ones in Central Park are well-treated or not.

Oh, gosh - he didn't know that the Mets/Yankees were BASEBALL teams?!? I bet Jon Stewart DID get a bunch of laughs out of that one!

I hate to say it, but if I ever meet LN, the first person I'll ask him about is his wife, Natasha Richardson, who I'm just CRAZY about. She is SUCH a great actress, and SO beautiful (this coming from me who is VERY heterosexual, okay?). Loved her in "Parent Trap" and "The White Countess." And the two of them look like they're still newlyweds when they're pictured together - too sweet!

Back to the horses - I'd recommend "Googling" Kentucky Derby and PETA (or HSUS) and see what we had to go through here in the beautiful Bluegrass state after the awful tragedy that befell the magnificent "Eight Belles." He won't admit it, but I think that's one of the reasons why her trainer is retiring at the end of the year - the PETA people were out in force at the track accusing him of "abusing" her (and I know for a fact that he ADORES all of his horses!). And don't get me started about what they did to the CEO of Yum! (Kentucky Fried Chicken) whose corporation HQ are here in - where else - Kentucky (including hounding the guy's KIDS!).

Ohhh, KHW, you still have the MENU from GB's restaurant?!? We have several lovely pubs and eateries around town here - all with an Irish theme - and ALL doing quite well. I can't imagine in a town as eclectic as NYC that people didn't "take" to it. Poor guy! Maybe he should try some "ownership interest" in one of our places down here in KY! ;)

So - 5'11"? I actually thought he would be SHORTER (since that's almost 6 feet) - isn't "Gov. Arnold" around 6'4 or 6'5 and he towered over GB in "EOD" - of course, that could have been a camera "trick."

LL,
Thanks for sharing your stories about your meeting with the Clintons and the Jon Stewart Show. I enjoyed reading your account!

I remember taking a carriage ride through Central Park when I was there and I, personally, didn't notice anything inhumane, but what do I know? Interesting story, though. I wonder how it will evolve.

I've met Liam Neeson a few times and to say he's "non-plussed" is a euphemism for sure! He's that, yet, can be very outgoing and very friendly!

Yes, GB started out at the Project with a number of Irish actors that included Liam. They both moved
across the Liffey River to The Abbey later on.

In his book GB speaks of Liam visiting him while in Hollywood. After they ate dinner he and Ellen found Liam doing the dishes in their kitchen!

Jtomp.,
GB's restaurant was located on Third Av. between 82 and 82nd St. This is back in 2003. I still have the menu from his place.

When he first opened it, he wanted it to be Irish fare, and it didn't go over very well. So, I'd heard he found another cook and designed the menu to be more Mediterranean-based. It had a very trendy look to it and, as I said, I loved the picture of the Connemara horses in the dining area. He said he named the place after his grandparents place where he spent summers in Ireland (Balitore's) near the Wicklow Mountains. It wasn't unusual for him to spend evenings in the place. The evening we were there the waitress mentioned he was in the night before with some friends.

GB's about 5'll". I noticed he was taller than I am (I'm about 5'7"). My husband's impression of him was he thought he appeared smaller than he'd expected.

Now, of course, I thought he was as good looking in person as he is on film! But, I'm sure, other people on this thread could tell you their impressions, also.

However, you've met your share of talented men~Obama, Clinton~very cool, indeed!

Oh, how I do know those beloved horses you speak of and I was touched by it all. I remember feeling emotional, especially, about Eight Belles. So sad!!

Wow...you know, I saw Liam Neeson on THE DAILY SHOW WITH JON STEWART yesterday while channel surfing, promoting his new movie, but most of the conversation centered on the subject of the horses that pull the carriages in Central Park.

Apparently, Liam is a regular visitor over at the stables where the horses are kept which is next door to the Comedy Central studios where Jon Stewart tapes his show. Stewart kept pressing Liam to agree that the horses should be stabled and kept in green pastures away from the City. Liam kept assuring Stewart that those horses are trained to pull the carriages in NYC and are treated better than most people.

Then Stewart tried to make a comparison of the beef between Alec Baldwin and Liam Neeson to that of the Mets and the Yankees, and Liam had to admit that he knew absolutely nothing about American football or baseball. He then asked if the Mets were a football team or baseball team and apologized for not knowing. You can imagine that Stewart milked that comedically for all it was worth. Liam was cool, though. Never raised his voice, remained soft-spoken and very non-plussed about it all.

I guess it's big news in NYC about Liam and Baldwin and the horses that pull the carriages. Liam's appearance on Stewart's show was the first I had heard of it.

Back on topic: Did you know that Liam Neeson and Gabriel Byrne started out acting together in Dublin at the Project Theater? Apparently, they are best friends.

One more comment on animals. I found this in an Irish newspaper. Liam Neeson and Alec Baldwin are in a dispute over the horses used in Central Park. Liam says the horses are treated well. Most of the horse owners are Irish. Alec says the horses are mistreated and the whole business should be outlawed.

I agree with Alec.

Hi, WH - yes, I was crying along with YOU and everyone else when I heard the news of Barbaro's passing. I had been reading his "battle" on a web site that posted daily (and sometimes "hourly") progress reports. The guy who posted it was a trainer in Michael Matz's stables.

I hadn't been on the site for several days prior to Barbaro's passing, so when I came back from lunch that day, one of my co-workers said, "Oh, did you hear that they had to put that horse to sleep?" I IMMEDIATELY knew who she was talking about, ran to my office, and saw that a "CNN Breaking News" bulletin had come in shortly before saying that Barbaro had to be euthanized. I cried like a BABY! ;-(

Actually, what killed Barbaro (laminitis) was the same thing that killed the GREAT Secretariat. I thought Barbaro could have been another Triple Crown winner - just SO beautiful, and he fought SO hard. If they find a CURE for that disease, his battle will have been worth it.

The owners are WONDERFUL people - it broke my heart to hear some of these slugs out there saying they kept him alive for the "stud fees."

I went to Eight Belles memorial at Churchill Downs a few months ago - not a dry eye in the place. Got to meet her trainer, Larry Jones, afterwards - just a great, country boy who LOVES his horses. Another teary moment.

Yes, I saw the same articles about the lineage - that these horses are being bred for speed, not for soundness (whereas Secretariat had BOTH, the horses nowadays just have speed!). It will come back and bite these high-powered owners in the ass. I couldn't even go NEAR the track for months after "Belle's" breakdown - it was TOO horrible!

Okay, back on topic. How about that handsome Irish actor named Gabriel Byrne?!?! ;)
