Why is HBO So Reluctant to Promote In Treatment?

I am posting this on the IT Member Threads and the Official IT Threads as well; and I know I am probably wasting my time. All I can hope is that someone with HBO will see it....

I watched a 1/2 hour show this morning on HBO called "What to Watch". It was about the upcoming season on HBO. It was primarily about the shows that are coming back or premiering in January and also included some shows that are currently running. But in a small segment of what is coming up in 2009 they mentioned that Curb Your Enthusiasm was going into production, that True Blood was also renewed for a second season and mentioned a smattering of other shows. But there was absolutely no mention of In Treatment coming back in 2009.

After this show ended there was a 5 minute segment that started out with a recap of 2008. They showed a snippet of every show that was on in 2008 (even The Wire, which they always ignored), but again, nothing about In Treatment...like it never existed. They even showed clips of things I never heard of and I watch HBO a lot.

Then finally in a small segment of 2 second spots of what was coming in 2009 they showed Dianne Weist, John Mahoney and Gabriel Byrne and said it was coming back.

I am just not understanding why HBO is not promoting this show. Granted it had a very small viewing audience; and probably if there had not been so much buzz about the unusual premise of the show and a resurgence in popularity of Gabriel Byrne, the show would not have been renewed for another season.

But with all the buzz and the Emmy nominations and wins, and with the show receiving more Golden Globe nominations than any other HBO show this year; you would think that they would put some effort behind promoting the show. Don't they want it to be a success?

I don't pretend to know anything about the television industry or its marketing. And I do recall that there was heavy promotion last fall before the show started...teasers on the network and magazine ads. If In Treatment can garner this much attention despite low ratings, imagine what would happen of the show was promoted now, at least half as much as it was last fall.

I hope in early spring, HBO does another episode of "What To Watch" and gives In Treatment as much promotional air time as this episode gave to Big Love which is coming back in January.

Hey Calla...welcome back and Happy New Year. It's great to see you checking in to the threads. Have they shown season one in the UK yet? I hope it's soon.

By the way, GB's documentary was on the TV3 website from Ireland...I hope you can go on the web and view it. I think you'll get a kick out of seeing GB in Dublin and Galway (getting his honorary doctorate...he looks dashing in the gown).

Hah, hah, LL. Yes, I will DEFINITELY stop calling the HBO crew "monkeys" if they show MUCH MORE love to "IT" in the coming season? (Isn't one of their shows called "Big Love"? Well, SHOW it to "In Treatment" - okay?).

Just saw the 4-5 second blip for IT in the HBO ad - blink and you miss it, but OH, GOSH - there's Dianne Weist, John Mahoney, and our MadHandsome - looking dashing, sitting in his chair, with a smile on his face (no teeth showing - sorry!).

Of course, HBO shows clips over and over and over for Entourage, True Blood, John Adams, Big Love, on and on, but no "IT."

Since TB, Entourage and BL are starting their new seasons soon, this is why the glut in ads. Also, HBO is replaying all the shows from last season over the next few days. Could we HOPe that they do the same for "IT"?!?

Oh, and this might be on ANOTHER topic, but I found this LINK on the daily "Google" search - a press junket is starting next week (January 9) in LA, and the guy who wrote this article will be interviewing NONE other than Gabriel Byrne (among others), and is asking for questions that he can ask the "celebrities". Anyone want to ask about THAT quilt?!?

Oh, for sure, Katie Couric owes Sarah Palin a "Fruit of the Month Club" gift for saving her anchor job. Katie got big mileage from that interview.

And, Lauriejoan, road dogs = buddies (male or female) you count on to go with you to events like the movies or fundraisers or parties or poetry readings or art gallery openings or red carpet events or a road trip to Las Vegas or to NYC to see Camelot or the Irish Arts Center Gala, etc.

I'm hoping that the Golden Globes result in big wins for IT, especially Gabriel Byrne, and that HBO would then promotionally do for IT what they did for The Sopranos or Sex And The City. Of course, giving HBO the benefit of the doubt, they may not have known if the producers of IT were going to do a second season. Additionally, who knew if Gabriel Byrne was going to be available or willing to do a second season.

Thank goodness for the IT Ladies at the stage door, along with Pmungle's work on the quilt. I'm convinced that Gabriel seeing his adorable IT fans at the Camelot stage door and walking past that quilt in the library everyday helped tip the scales for him to come back for a second season. It was grueling work and he looked fatigued in that final episode at Laura's house, but he gave the BEST performance of any lead actor on TV by far. Bravo, Gabriel!!!

So, HBO, please show IT more love in season two. Don't let the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn outshine you in the love department for your own show, OK HBO? If you do that, I promise to convince Jtom to stop calling you monkeys.

Yeah, LJ, I agree about the rubbing it in (ha!). Oh my goodness, SMILING Gabriel - and in person - would be a lovely experience.

I think Katie Couric would be giggly if she had a wealth of material on GB. She think there was some definite attraction on her part to the man! Unfortunately, her behavior in this interview reflects that she's not a "serious" journalist - but I've got to give her kuddos for the Sarah Palin interview.

I used to have other activities on Friday nights back then...oh, like, say, dating and going out dancing with my homegirls or going to the movies with my road dogs or going to the gym to workout....that kinda stuff

LL -- what are road dogs?

he has the most amazing laugh and smile...I guess he's a bit of a genius, cuz he doles out that smile very sparingly, so by the time we get to see it, we just hungrily lap it up, now don't we?

I totally agree!!! He often has such a serious, sad or pensive look on his face-- that his smile is like the rainbow coming out!! That's another incredible thing about seeing him in person -- it was the smiling, charming Gabriel that emerged from the Lincoln Center stage door after Camelot!

Yeah, Katie Couric was annoyingly giddy in that interview and really giggly. Gabriel was sweet enough to answer her questions and sort of play along with her, but I thought she wasted an opportunity to ask one of the most insightful men in entertainment about his views on several dozen tangential points related to the show. She should have replaced her research staff.

Somebody ought to send her GB's documentary....maybe that might help her formulate better questions next time. At least she would know the wealth of intelligence to be plumbed from Gabriel Byrne.

Oh, gosh, TANTALIZING! Shout it out, gals!

Yes, he was (and is) adorable in MM. Can't get over the fact that they canceled it, but, of course, I would have been devastated - much better to see it NOW when GB is at the full height of his MOJO-ness.

And I doubt that HBO had ANY idea that casting GB in the role would have the effect that it did on the female population of the world. I think he was always known as a "movie star" (not a TV star), but now that more and more "movie stars" are on cable TV series (Glenn Close & Holly Hunter, for example), I'm glad that they saw his potential.

By the way, I just finished watching that Katie Couric interview again. She is SOOOO goofy in that interview (yeah, her "researcher" read these message boards!). She's laughing away, and MH is looking at her like she has two heads (ha!). Also, I had forgotten that he says he "doesn't have HBO" (so he couldn't SEE it even if he WANTED to!).

I STILL don't think he looks good in prints - especially in THAT shirt (solids are MUCH better on him), and I STILL can't figure out that god-awful bruise on his forehead.

Very adorable. I wish he would do more comedy.

Oh you know it, LL. I have no doubt that his smoldering physical appeal is going to be amplified in Season 2. As incredulous as this may sound, I get the sense that while the producers knew they were getting a great actor in Gabriel Byrne, they were somewhat oblivious to the fact they had a bona-fide, mesmerizing sex symbol sitting in that leather chair, capable of driving female viewers mad with desire. Now they know.
