I've been watching since the second week and I just can't figure out in which city this is supposed to take place. It's driving me crazy!
Here are the things I've been considering:
*Most of them drive, but cabs and buses are also available, meaning that the setting is probably not as urban as mine, NYC, but probably more urban than, say, Kansas City.
*The weather never seems anything but mild. The characters don't wear heavy coats, but we know that Laura's wedding was going to be in June and she referred to it as "a few months away".
*The accents are not at all helpful, as we know that five of the six main characters are acting with American accents (Alex=Scottish, Gabriel=Irish, Laura=Australian, Sophie=Australian, Amy=South African).
I'm thinking:
Outside of Chicago somewhere (but the weather thing doesn't fit)
Somewhere in the Northwest (Portland? Seattle?)
Somewhere in California
Any suggestions?

Agree about MD, but I don't think "the intitute" is NIMH. NIMH is a huge federal organization for mental health in general. I think when Paul and Gina refer to the institute that they are talking about a (fictional) small private institute for the study and practice of psychoanalysis and perhaps its more contemporary offshoots, whatever they are.

Definitely MD, and definitely not in Virginia ...in this week's session, Jake said he drove over four hours to his parents' house "in Virginia".
Perhaps Baltimore, based on the variety of clients (high power business woman (Amy), world class gymnast (Sophie), ace military pilot (Alex), doctor (Laura) etc. Could be Bethesda, MD. Paul and Gina are always refering to "the institute", which could be NIMH (National Institute of Mental Health), which is headquartered in Bethesda.

At Alex's funeral, I saw a Maryland license plate.
And, Sophie's mom's car this week also has a MD plate.
Plus, Jake mentions that Lenny can rattle off all of Boog Powell's stats from the 1970's World Series (when Boog played for the Baltimore Orioles).
Josh Charles, who plays Jake, is from Baltimore too! They had a great article about him (and his love for the area) this past week in the DC "Express" newspaper (given out for free on the Metro, read by practically everyone).
Go MD!
I live in Annapolis, MD, but work in DC - and it's true that Paul could have patients in MD, DC and VA. We love to drive around here!

Tonight Jake mentioned Middleburg, so it's VA for sure.

Alex could be stationed at Norfolk and or Virginia Beach!

I have to agree with Sparkle berry and danceswithsunlight. I believe Arlington Va. would be the best bet. I have visited Harper's Ferry many times, as I grew up in the DC/VA/MD area. As interesting as the point is - about being the "psychological point" of the trails - I can't imagine setting up a therapy practice there. Not a large population from which to draw patients. There has been some growth over the years, due to the people willing to make the two hour commute to the tri-state area business centers, but its still quite rural. We have to remember also, the further west we head in search of the location, the further away any naval base becomes as well. Just a view from a native.

I THINK I FOUND THE ANSWER!!
Yeah, I am re-watching this Jake & Amy epi right now and caught the same clues. Have also been trying to figure this out, but this episode provided a lot more data. I think I may have solved the riddle!
From Wikipedia:
West Virginia has 4 miles (6 km) of the trail, not including about 20 miles (32 km) along the Virginia border. Here the trail passes through the town of Harpers Ferry, headquarters of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. Harpers Ferry is considered the "psychological midpoint" of the AT.
!!!! Talk about symbolism!
Jake said he quit high school to hike the AT and came into town for supplies. Wikipedia says:

Many trail towns are accustomed to hikers passing through, and thus many have hotels and hiker-oriented accommodations. In Jake and Amy: Week Seven, Jake suggests that Paul buy a house in Middleburg, VA and they discuss they fact that this area is horse country (it's very beautiful and lots of rich, old money people live there). Jake also says, "You know the Appalachain Trail goes right through this area." It does pass near Middleburg, but Jake says it as if they are located in that area. However, Middleburg is at least 45 minutes away from Arlington. I think that I would agree with danceswithsunlight that Paul lives in Arlington, VA. His patients could come from D.C. and Maryland as well as Virginia.

Yet Paul told Sophie he seriously considered reporting Sy and would reevaluate if she (seriously) rescinded her declaration that it wouldn't happen again. If Sophie's already reached the age of consent, what could Paul have reported Sy for?
